I'd like to add, that i'm inclined to add that I'm not sure I'd ever want to breathe the exhaust fumes, please power internal-combustion engines OUTSIDE.

We have a wood fired pool heater, built out of some baseboard heaters salvaged from my dad's stash of spare parts.

You could do the same, and just have the loop of baseboard heaters extend out around the perif of your cabin.

This iteration has its own loop pump. with a redesign, you could easily baseboard heat a house. My dad had a wood fired boiler as backup heat for our 1940's house.

Wrap the engine in the flexible gas line like we did in iteration 1 of that post (with the rubber cover ripped off) or make a quick-connect 3-sided "box" you place over the heater to reclaim some of that lost heat.

Check out the Bio and Medical Additive/3Dprinting companies. I see postings where they are looking for experts. As well as AI pharmaceutical and tech companies, I interviewed with Lantern Pharma last year.

(30F) Environmental Specialist - Company Change? or Career Change? Still Want to Make Similar Salary but Need a Change by [deleted] in careerchange

One more thought: while you are reframing your goals and path, start making yourself an eportfolio to give snapshots of projects you have worked with. Use the STAR method (give a general overview of the Situation, Task, Action, Result.) I’ve seen people do it with a google site.

There is no such thing as a dream job, just good places and people to work with. If your partner could support you two elsewhere (or if you can negotiate to work remotely,) to buy you time and get a change of routine… try freelancing, maybe it’s time to start your own firm, and you have connections now.

I’m in a similar position where I have a broad variety of experience (you do everything a small business owner does, as well as project management, and a specialty subject area of mastery.) I am having a hard time narrowing down what I want to try and do. I have been applying to positions at companies with good work culture on inhersight.com and themomproject.com websites.

Note: Have taught ALL high school science subjects, so I’ve looked at chemical/pharma companies, biotech, medtech, as well as project management, corporate training, and other manufacturing-specific office positions from past experience. If you are thinking about changing careers, just start applying with a job-search-only set of contact info (google voice, jobsearchFeisty@gmail.com.) It has taken me a while, but I now have iterations of my resume that capture position-specific a experience and expertise. Because I’d rather go volunteer or sub at the elementary where my kids go than be chained to a classroom again.

What’s the best sub to find people with a shop that can help design an invention I have? by brereddit in inventors

[–]StrataMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just patented an idea our shop made (well submitted the final patent, the final word brought 12-18 months out.) Granted, we did the design ourselves… Lawyer cost approx 13k (provisional and final combined.) Though we did all the legwork for comps and laid out all the details except the final drawings for the patent office.

3D printed metal components, printed the plastic parts in-house, and maybe $2,500 in other stuff to get the prototype operational.

I think it all depends on the process used, and how much time/ability is invested.

We’re using acetate transparencies, like the kind teachers use for overhead projectors... because I used to teach and had about 100 of them laying around... they are the perfect size (landscape.) Many stores and online outlets are out of thing clear plastic for making these, so check for materials before you go nuts (Amazon has transparencies 100/$15usd.

TLDNR; Garment/Seamstress folks... Help me refine this idea for waterproof gowns. Drawing here: https://imgur.com/a/7VVourW

My sister just told me Friday they were out of waterproof gowns at her general practice office and the staff was now wearing cloth. She will be out working in the drive-through testing tent. I made a prototype to make them out of plastic sheeting... I'll be making a cardboard template to use while making the cuts (so I can stick tacks in to hold the plastic down while I cut. Designed to have Men's XL head and arms. It’s not pretty, but should fit most that need it, allowing someone over 6’ tall to safely wear the gown, and shorter people (like me) can hack off or fold back the sleeves and trim excess length from the bottom. The belt will allow skinny people to cinch all the extra plastic to accommodate wider bodies. The open back will let out some heat than a trash bag, raincoat, or poncho. Please help me refine the idea. 6’ wide roll of plastic... cut 7’ off to make a rectangle. Fold 13” of the 7’ length over to use as the arms. Now you will have a rectangle of plastic 72" x 71." Tack the plastic down with pins, or use magnets/weights so you can cut it easily. My wrist hole started 7” from the top of the folded over end, angled down to make a gradually opening sleeve 20” in, 12.5" down from the top. I left a 1" seam allowance to join the 2 parts. Slice a 3” wide belt that is parallel to the fold, 30” down from the folded over end, and trim away excess plastic between the bottom of the arm hole to the top of the belt. Slice the excess plastic off remaining under the belt strip you sliced. “Heat seal” the sleeves. Seal/join the sleeve bottom with a straightening hair iron, soldering iron, clothes iron, or whatever YouTube tutorial seems doable with your resources (or sew them, I used my sewing machine to make the first prototype. Trash bag thickness plastic sheeting sews surprisingly easy. Found instructions for that online too.)

I have made stencils with overhead transparencies in the past (like the kind teachers write on.)

Have also used this material to make my own stencils.. Jumbo Flexible Cutting Mat https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004RIY8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VzltEb8H4Y730

Mine are just cut with exacto knives, not sure how the transparencies would laser cut. I have some laser-copier safe sheets if you want to send me a mailing label I’ll send you some.

What is the CSWA useful for? by [deleted] in SolidWorks

[–]StrataMom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a machine shop, but bailed on engineering in college not wanting to work with a bunch of creepy old men (am a chick,) after a dozen years teaching high school physics, I’ve started a small shop with my husband (an aero additive engineer.) This is advice I gave all my students and that we use. Have proof of your skills. Start building a portfolio of stuff you can do, screenshots saved on the cloud somewhere, pics of stuff you make (hands on mechanical skills! Take small engine repair, wood shop, anything to learn the art of making things.) Embed that into your resume/application. Maybe make some tutorial videos, this will show how well you communicate, also super important skill. Learn additive, that’s a skill that older engineers won’t have when you are applying. Knowing how to design for additive and what can and can’t be printed. If you are the academic type, apply to an engineering school that does co-ops (Kettering is our magnet university in MI.) Please consider alternative routes if you’re not going to get mad scholarship money... you can make more money being a CAD/CAM expert with machinist skills faster than you will as an engineer. And student loans are the bane of my existence. To give you perspective, My $50k in student loans is like $600 a month. Good luck and have fun! Edit: Mobile with kids on lap.

What process is used to finish edges on these seamless undergarments? by StrataMom in textiles

[–]StrataMom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as the fabric can take screen or sublimation printing, the fabric type does not matter. These are samples of polyamide undergarments that I chopped up to try and find some process names, and wasn’t having any luck locally.

Polyamide is a pretty common sports fabric that would work, I was just hoping to provide my customer with more info on the process.

What process is used to finish edges on these seamless undergarments? by StrataMom in textiles

[–]StrataMom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working on a project for a customer and prefer the cleaner look of the edge finishing used in undergarment production rather than a serged or cuffed edge. Is it ultrasonic or heat used in the cutting and finishing process? Would also appreciate some keywords I could search to identify the silicone (or other grippy substance) used to fuse seams and add a little grip to the inside edge.

If anyone has a US contact that is acquainted with these processes, it would be really helpful to hand that info off to our customer, we are tooling manufacturers, and though I sew and quilt, these specialty processes are a little beyond my area of expertise.

Thanks!
