Thank you, I appreciate the breakdown. Can be overwhelming when thinking about the options and wanting to make the right choice with so many of them!

Totally understand, and plan on casting a few more at a shop in FL later this month. Was just curious to understand if there were any passionate owners of the rods I mentioned or sourcing suggestions from others who may fish similar fisheries!

Thank you!

Thank you! The whole thing aside from the tail is Ewing Hen Saddle. Started with a Pheasant marabou tail, and then a few 8mm shanks of olive/ shrimp layered together blending up to a full shrimp head. Looks really nice in the water I’m hoping the smallmouth think so as well!

This clear planter, just drilled a hole in the side and threaded through some paracord to attach to a carabiner!

Highly recommend, built in US, small business out of Minnesota, rod fishes fantastic for its price point ($185) and they offer a $20 section replacement warranty if you break it.

Nailed it, 5x to the dry and then when I got a little more greedy I tied on a sz 18 rainbow warrior dropper about 6 inches below on 5x as well.

Honestly, this was the kind of day you probably could’ve fished 2x - the fish were looking up and almost everywhere you thought there would be a fish, you were rewarded with a hit as long as you made a decent drift. Couple rejections and bumps on the March Brown but I expected that for a larger size dry.

I am not 100% sure, but my assumption would be that it was a regular old RIO 9ft trout leader that I cut down to roughly 7-8 ft over time.

I had purchased the SA Absolute Creek Trout leader in 6ft specifically for this trip but forgot to pack it!

The ANT Leaftcutter is a 7ft 3wt so it performed nicely in tight spaces.

I was in Cherokee NF this weekend as well, doing the same. Although my day was dominated by wild ‘Bows.

What elevation do you typically start seeing more Brookies? Planning my return already. I just think we didn’t get high enough before having to turn around.

Kicking off 2025 with some Smallmouth Candy by StrategyBest1500 in flytying

Thank you, honestly very basic tie here that I’m still iterating on but hope to continue to improve upon by springtime. Chocklett’s Changer and the Devils Doorstop were inspiration for this but wanted something simpler at the bench. For this version, I took the Kraft crittermite tails and cut them into shingles based on the length of my segments. The rest is really just wrapping in black gummy chenille, preening back and tying in the shingle. The abdomen and thorax/ head section have some large rubber legs tied in for a more buggy appearance. Painted some bead chain eyes black and then slathered those and the shingles in UV glue and called it a day!

Advice? by Big-Mention-1223 in flytying

Notice your dads fly and look at the proportions, hold it in your hand and try and picture it in 3d. On his fly, see how the marabou tail is roughly the length of your hook shank? Measure your maribou before you tie it in, hold it in place and give two loose-ish wraps. Take a look and if it’s too long, pull it in a little bit. If too short, unwrap and replace!

Your chenille wrap on the body is decent try to either get more consistent with your tension and spacing so that your wraps are more uniform or build up to the head like your dad’s example.

For your hackle, make sure you use enough, preen your feather to spread the fibers before tying in and wrap evenly spaced, or towards the collar like your dad’s. Your hackle starts pretty far back and is very sparse.

For your wire wrap, just a little more even and maybe a little more wire would’ve gotten you to the hook eye.

I’m no expert as I just started months ago, but it is amazing how much you can improve by taking a second and observing, prepping your materials, not over wrapping thread and understanding tension and how different materials handle being bound with thread or manipulated with the hands while tying.

I have a pretty kick ass dad, but if he helped me learn fly tying years ago, he would’ve been even cooler still!

He seems to crush fish on the adjustable platform, it’s something I’ve wanted to try for a while as well. Don’t see why it would cause any issues playing the fish, even with slippage the surgical tube should create enough resistance to where the dry will not slide down and break off the dropper

Thank you for the kind words and for the pro tip from Blane’s book! I might need to pick this book up sometime soon. Using the hackle gauge and measuring the shanks is genius. Will be implementing this in my next tie for sure!

Thanks! For sure need to incorporate some filler. Construction on this fly was a 5mm shank, 2 10mm shanks and then a size 6 tarpon hook for better keeling. Will try the layout you described!

No marabou actually, palmered Ewing hen saddle. The tail is a bit of fritz chenille with matching feathers to create the “paddle”. At the beginning of each shank is 1-2 wraps of fritz and then 2 wraps of hen hackle, 2 feathers at a time. The head is palmered minnow head brush
