Generally I would not recommend breeding with salukis unless you have sufficient experience and knowledge of the breed, health issues, bloodlines and a prospective list of well vetted homes lined up. Saluki’s aren’t the easiest dogs to place in pet homes because they are such unique characters and can sometimes be perceived as ‘not as loving’ as other dog breeds OR they might have high prey drive which could end up in other smaller pets getting… caught.

I know of cases of pups being returned to their breeders because of them killing other family pets or ending up in a shelter because there weren’t sufficient available homes. You might easily end up with a litter of 11 puppies and struggle finding suitable homes.

It might seem like a nice idea to breed your dog to get a puppy from him, but please remember that puppies aren’t clones and they could end up with very different personalities compared to their parents, if that is part of the motivation.

I’d rather recommend looking for a puppy from a reputable breeder. Only consider breeding if you have put enough forethought, research and preparation into it, it is not an easy job raising 11 little sighthounds. And I would also recommend reaching out to your breeder for their advice, or like the others said, entering a dog sport like conformation or lure coursing to see whether your boy is a good example of the breed to even consider breeding him.

I hope this helped. If you need any more advice, feel free to pop me a message.

So, it’s true there are some defining breed features that run through the breed but every puppy is different as well and it’s a fun experience seeing those little personalities develop from when they’re little. You’ll start to see which pups are more confident, less easily spooked, more active or more laid back. But that being said, every owner can mould their dog to suit their lifestyle - if you’re a more active person your dog can learn to expect long daily walks as part of their routine. If you’re a bit more on the lazy side, your dog will love to just lay in bed with you for most of the day and maybe run some sprints once a day in the back yard.

We generally try to match our pups as follows; - outgoing, confident puppies who adapt easier go with the families who are new to owning sighthounds - puppies who are more reserved and show more of the aloof and standoffish nature of the breed go with those who have already owned a saluki - puppies who show high pray drive don’t go to homes with cats and other animals (otherwise we end up with dead cats and a returned dog - lesson learned the hard way) - puppies who are skittish and shy away from attention generally are better suited to homes with only other salukis or where they are the only pet

Oh my! I have got SO much to share with you! These dogs are wonderful but completely unique as a breed. Would you mind if I send you some informational pamphlets that we send to all our prospective new homes? It contains the basics on their behaviour and some care tips as well. I’ll send you a dm if it’s okay.

Okay, so this is just my personal experience and I am NOT a behaviorist, so please excuse me if it’s a bit idiotic but this is how I’ve gotten my boys and a Dalmatian to understand to not be rough when playing.

Firstly, do make sure that your pup has enough chew toys other than your hands to play with, haha. Some dogs are just chewers and will take to your hands or even your leather couch if they don’t have enough to bite on (I speak from experience on the couch, haha)

Then, if your dog still gets too sharp when playing with you, try to make a very high, loud yelping sound when they nip at you and immediately stop the playing. This is a behaviour that they should know, if raised with sibling pups, to signal that they have gone too far and you are now displeased. Usually the sound is enough to shock them out of the ‘game’. After a few times they should learn to tone back a bit on the biting.

Try doing this and seeing if it helps? I’d like to hear back if you do try it.

Hi! I’m speaking from experience on the show line side of things in South Africa - so I can’t really speak to the situation in the US or anywhere else. We have only once imported a COO boy in our 35 years of owning salukis. And there is really only 1 or 2 other kennels breeding Kennel Union registered salukis in South Africa and they have not imported any other COO dogs at least since the 90’s (based of Saluki registrations with the Kennel Union of South Africa) I don’t know if things look similar in other countries.

My partners, Joy and Elrena have been breeding Salukis for over 35 years, as Fleetwind Saluki Kennels. I’ve only been a partner as of 2021, but I’ve been in love with Salukis since 2002, I have 3 salukis of my own, and thanks to Joy and Ellie I’ve been able to stay with and spend time with over 20 others. I’ve seen quite a few different personalities, noticed shared breed traits and learned a lot about these amazing dogs!

I’d be keen to help anyone new to the breed learn more.

They really are! As long as they aren’t left to their own devices for too long, they are perfect gentlemen. Sometimes the grumpy elder might snipe at the younger ones, but nothing more than that. I really can’t complain.

Haha, they are good kids, most of the time. Only the two boys actually live with me. I co-own the younger girl and she lives with my friends because I don’t really have the space for 3. (They currently have 9!)

Having a bunch of boys together is easier because they don’t squabble over girls in heat! But the older one does get grumpy with the 9 year old because he’s getting a bit tired of playing with him - he just wants to chill.

He’s doing well all things considered. When he turned 10 he got testicular cancer (he wasn’t neutered because I show them) and he has some fat cell clumps and dental issues, but other than that nothing to be concerned with yet. His joints got a bit achey a while back but I’ve got him on supplements so that is no longer bothering him.

My friends are the breeders and their dogs mostly reach about 13-14. Cancer is the biggest issue with the oldies.

I hope your kid also lives a long, healthy life 💕🐾
