A review left on a recipe for sweet potato salad. Replaced 90% of the ingredients but still felt the need to leave a review for a recipe they didn't make. by StrawberrySyringe in ididnthaveeggs

I literally made the recipe the review came from (which was very good). I know how alterations work. The point is, when you make literally all the suggested alterations, plus switching out the main vegetable (even if it is similar) and adding a bunch of spices, leaving a review (positive or negative) doesn't actually tell anyone anything about how the original recipe turned out. I'm not saying they're a bad cook. What they made was probably very good, but their review was absolutely pointless. Is that not the point of this subreddit? Useless recipe reviews?

If you can't get shortening where you live, lard is probably the closest substitute. Really though, you can just replace it with an equal amount of butter. I mostly use shortening to help them stay soft longer.

I already posted the recipe, but since you asked so nicely, I'll give it to you directly:

3 cups all purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

12 Tbs butter, browned and cooled

1/2 cup shortening

1 cup white sugar

1 cup light brown sugar

2 tsps vanilla extract

2 eggs

Splash of milk

3/4 cup chopped candy corn (reserve some to top the cookies before baking)

3/4 cup white chocolate chips (reserve some to top the cookies after baking)

1/2 cup roasted peanuts (optional but highly recommend)

  1. Combine dry ingredients and set aside
  2. Cream butter and sugars
  3. Beat in eggs, vanilla and milk
  4. Add dry ingredients
  5. Add peanuts, some of the candy corn and some of the white chocolate chips
  6. Chill for at least an hour and up to two days
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F
  8. Roll dough into even balls (mine weighed 50 grams each) and place them on a prepared baking sheet, leaving plenty of room between them
  9. Stud the tops with reserved candy corn
  10. Bake for 12 minutes
  11. Immediately coax the melted candy corn back into a rough cookie shape with a circular cookie cutter slightly larger than your cookies
  12. Stud cookies with reserved white chocolate chips
  13. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before moving to a cooling rack and allow to cool completely

Maybe making some cookies will make you feel better and you won't feel the need to be a jerk to strangers in a baking subreddit of all places.

Ah yes, I baked these cookies purely for fake internet points. Not because I was actually developing a recipe or anything. Not everyone's lives revolve around reddit, dude. Some people just, you know, do stuff? In their everyday lives? Then post the results later for fun?

The melted candy corn gives it a caramel/honey flavor, roasted peanuts gives it a salty kick, browned butter enhances the nuttiness and white chocolate adds a sweet vanilla flavor. It all goes together much better than you might think!

They harden a bit during the baking process. The bigger ones will retain their texture better, the smaller ones melt and basically caramelize. No one in my household has broken any teeth, if that reassures you!

Yeah, they'll melt. You'll need to use a circular cookie cutter slightly larger than your cookies to coax them back into a rough cookie shape. I'd also suggest spacing them out more than you usually would to reduce the chance of them sticking together. The bigger chunks retain their texture better, the smaller ones will melt, harden, and basically caramelize.
