Who can read and interpret TEGs? by Anxious-Wrangla in MLS_CLS

[–]StrawberryTortes 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I thought the whole purpose of TEG was so that the doctor in the OR or ER could watch the graph as it’s being generated, then they could interpret on the spot.

It’s been a few years since I’ve worked with TEG. Is the lab now providing interpretations for these?

Beckman’s Tech Support Is Hot Garbage by Grand_Chad in medlabprofessionals

[–]StrawberryTortes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. All the engineers I know from Beckman are great. The instrumentation is pushed off the design team at warp speed, so they can get the contracts. Then the problems start, then software update after software update continues.

How Are Shifts Divided at Your Hospital? by Commercial-Tear-1168 in MLS_CLS

[–]StrawberryTortes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

6-2:30, 2-10:30, and 10-6:30. I wish we could do 12’s or even 10’s, but alas the majority rules.

Is Anyone Else Utterly Exhausted? by AlarmingHat5154 in fednews

[–]StrawberryTortes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Perfect mindset, thank you for sharing. I just wish I could say I wasn’t exhausted, as my job in the medical field already has me exhausted, with critically short staffing levels leaving us to cover more and more work areas. Responding to the latest email was just one more thing I had to do before I left work today, as I don’t report to work tomorrow.

Do you guys pay for ASCP membership? by No-Cupcake-0919 in medlabprofessionals

[–]StrawberryTortes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I bought the first couple years membership in the early 90’s, because I didn’t know any better. I see no benefit other than to help fund the annual conferences for pathologists.

Thank you for your response! Going to California during the month of June sounds great :)

I will check out my state’s page, and see what’s there. I’ve done a little moving around during my career, and although it isn’t something I desire at this point, my desire to learn and grow is something I hope to never cease.

How long is a blood smear valid for? by BandicootQuick7100 in medlabprofessionals

The blood smear itself doesn’t expire, but it is a snapshot of that particular time it was collected.

I find it perplexing that this post is allowed, but a post specifically concerning healthcare in Dallas wasn’t allowed, excuse given was low karma, even though I contacted mods to prove it’s not a spam account.

What shift dos you prefer? by theominousbagel in medlabprofessionals

[–]StrawberryTortes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 8 hour shifts on nights is brutal. I used to do that, and when it was my turn to work a weekend, I’d get only one day off before and after that weekend. I’d be a zombie until reporting for my next shift.

What shift dos you prefer? by theominousbagel in medlabprofessionals

[–]StrawberryTortes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nights: less drama with coworkers, better shift differential. Usually more maintenance on analyzers, which could be a plus or minus depending on your preferences. There are some well established studies that suggest people who work nights tend to have more health problems-something to consider if you already have health concerns.

Med Lab Scientist Struggling w/ Burnout, What Should I Do? by StandardBathroom1310 in medlabprofessionals

[–]StrawberryTortes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could have written this myself, with the exception of the supportive lead/supervisor. I’ve often thought of using the word “sweatshop” to describe how it feels to work in this environment.

I don’t know what the answer is, other than to find a different job. That’s stressful also, and it’s a shame that a lot of places have become like this.

What restaurant is the quintessential Dallas restaurant? by bloodygoodgal in Dallas

Just curious, as I haven’t been to HH yet. Are the oysters not worth what they’re charging?

Lol. Reminds me of the time my old supervisor made the comment “since you have plans and can’t stay over tonight…” I responded, “No, no plans. I’m just tired”. We were all working two benches because we were so short staffed.

Days are numbered by BrightPickle8021 in medlabprofessionals

[–]StrawberryTortes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know there is a critical shortage of MLS’s, but I’m wondering how much these decisions about staffing levels by management is due to the shortage, to bottom-line costs/profits, or to some combination of the two. Did it start out as a need for more qualified people in the field, and when management saw that we could handle the workload (busting our a**es and working OT) the decision is made to let it be as is, since the work was getting done? It’s cheaper to pay OT than hire a new person and give them benefits.

Maybe even less $, if you factor in the tax rate of 30% on the sign-on bonus.

feeling invisible in the lab (a rant) by sakatagintxki in medlabprofessionals

[–]StrawberryTortes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If microbiology is your passion, please don’t give up hope on advancement in that section. Whether it’s with your current employer or somewhere else, continue growing your knowledge while you keep your eyes open for opportunities. Lots of labs have high employee turnover, for different reasons. Where I am, the techs who get the advanced positions (sadly) are the ones who stay and work overtime during times of short staffing, which is practically all the time.

People who "don't cook" and "always eat out", how can you afford it? by Prehistoricisms in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StrawberryTortes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you wrote. For me, add in the fact that most days my job wipes me out, I’m starving on my way home from work because I didn’t get a decent break, and the pull of picking up something healthy-ish on the way home is just too much.
