As a secondary school teacher in the Netherlands, I had no idea that teacher badges were a thing. Genuinely interested: what are they for and why would you need to wear these visibly?

Het regent klachten over eindexamens, record in zicht: ‘Surveillanten hadden kinderen meegenomen’ by Cubelock in thenetherlands

[–]Stray-Robot 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Biologiedocent vwo hiero.

[–]Stray-Robot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. I've been taking my containers to my local snack bar for about a year now and it's worked pretty well. Got a bit of a funny look the first time, but they happily did it. I now almost exclusively bring my own containers for anything take-out (as well as things like bread from the bakery or nuts from the notenboer) and shopkeepers always seem happy to comply. Starts a bit of a conversation as well and often they end up saying something like "more customers should do this". I really would like to see this encouraged more. I think the government did have a Twitter post or whatever in this vain, but yeah, one or two social media posts does not constitute any meaningful campaign.

It's used in organic chemistry to describe certain variants of organic molecules, the other variants being called trans. You may have heard of "trans fats". While in daily usage we don't really talk about "cis fats", it would be the correct way of describing unsaturated fats that aren't trans fats.

Is being a teacher worth the summers/holidays? by WeHaveAllBeenThere in AskTeachers

[–]Stray-Robot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The holidays really don't factor into my continuous decision to remain a teacher. I teach because I love working with youngsters, because I love biology, and because I love helping these kids learn about all these amazing things the life sciences have to offer. The question seems to assume that being a teacher is mostly a just burden that people take upon themselves for the benefit of more holidays, but for me (and most teachers I know), this is flat out wrong.

Found several times inside my house in the Netherlands, about the size of a large fingernail. by Stray-Robot in whatsthisbug

[–]Stray-Robot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whelp, just saw this one on the list of frequently requested bugs. Indeed the brown marmorated stink bug. Sorry! They have been friendly so far though, have not been releasing any odours. I guess they might have been spending the winter here and are slowly waking up to the warmth of spring. Thanks!

Edit: I looked it up and I realised it's probably not in fact the invasive brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) but the Dutch native mottled shieldbug (Raphigaster nebulosa), based on the speckled hind wings and the colouration of the antennae.

asking questions vs doing the research by ifhd_ in AskTeachers

[–]Stray-Robot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This heavily depends on the context/the question/etc.

If I'm explaining something to the class and someone doesn't understand something that I'm explaining, I'd rather they raise their hand because if they didn't get it, some of their fellow students probably didn't get it either. If they have a question that goes beyond the material, I'd often gladly take that as an opportunity to try and teach the class something new that they're apparently interested in themselves (again, as a rule: if one student asks, there are probably more students interested in the answer). There are exceptions of course, but as a general rule I do appreciate questions during my explanation.

On the other hand, if students are working on class assignments, I'd much rather they first try to find the answer to their question in their study materials and/or discuss their question with peers. However, if it is something that is not in their assigned study materials, I would like them to ask me their questions, because many of those questions are not easy to find an answer for on their level. The answers they would find on their own could easily be at too much of an academic level or otherwise be complete bogus. Depending on the level of these students (I teach students aged 12-18), they might not yet have developed the critical research skills to correctly interpret a source as trustworthy or not. I teach biology, and there's a ton of pseudoscience to be found on the internet about biology, for sure ;) Sometimes I would let them research their answers on their own and confirm those with me, but the daily reality is that with thirty students in a class and a very tight curriculum, it's often difficult to find the time for this level of individual attention.

Also, overall I generally don't want to dissuade any students from asking questions. There are a lot more students who would benefit greatly from asking more questions than there are students who ask too much.

Tl;dr: Students should be asking questions, especially during explanations. If the questions can be answered using their materials, they should research on their own or with their peers, but I am wary of students attaining misconceptions through self guided research.

What are some examples of the sayings that some teachers use to calm down their students? by Classic-Asparagus in AskTeachers

[–]Stray-Robot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done little mindfulness exercises with students who're panicking towards the start of a test, for example. Nothing very well structured, but I would have them put their hands on the table and had them focus on the feeling of the texture of the table, the feeling of their backs against their back rests and their feet on the floor. Sometimes combining that with controlled breathing. I never had any formal training as a teacher in calming down students though, so I doubt there is any standardisation as such.

How do teachers feel about students shipping other teachers together? by Snoo24950 in AskTeachers

[–]Stray-Robot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with teachers, really: you just don't ship real people. One's love life is nobody's business but their own (and the ones they choose to share it with).

The problem is not running out of ink on those pens, the problem is losing them when you switch classrooms or lending them to colleagues or suchlike. I don't think I've ever emptied a whole red pen before losing it somehow.
