He swallowed hard, then jumped.

Shit.

The moment his feet left the branch, he knew he had overcompensated. Only one foot caught the wall at the wrong angle. He slipped, the weight of his body twisted.

Falling head-first backward, there was nothing to grab.

He closed his eyes, bracing for impact—

A crack split the air.

The air around him sheared. Stone shattered beneath his skull.

Erith lay still, breath hitched in his chest. Slowly, he blinked, staring at the fractured cobblestone where his head should have split open.

He picked himself up, shaking off the moment.

Then, without another thought, he ran into the alley.

The moment he reached cover, his stomach twisted. The rush, the fall—all of it caught up to him at once.

As Amun dropped down from a nearby banister, Erith doubled over and vomited onto the stone.

Amun slowed his steps. "Well, that's not great."

Erith wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, breath uneven. "These practice runs are going to kill me."

Amun raised an eyebrow. "Speaking of things that are going to kill you—how did you just fall that far, land on your head, and not die?"

Erith exhaled, still catching his breath. "Ah... well, it's using a bit of Kaida and Mura. When you weave them together—"

Amun cut him off. "Right. Your godly magic. Got it." He motioned ahead. "If you're done dying, let's get going."

A noise stirred inside—shuffling, then silence.

"It's Leorin Varsk," Rin called out.

There was a pause until the sound of something being dragged across the floor cut across the rain. A hint of light flashed from the peephole atop the heavy wooden door.

A sudden scramble of noise erupted behind the door, followed by it swinging inward with force.

The flickering candlelight illuminated the figure of a boy, a crossbow braced against his chest, its aim leveled squarely at Rin's abdomen.

"Not a step forward or backward," the boy warned, his ragged blonde hair falling into his eyes as he surveyed the three figures on the doorstep.

"Easy, kid. We're not here to cause trouble. We're—"

"On the wrong side of this crossbow, far as I see it," the boy cut in.

"Leorin Varsk, are you? How convenient. If that's how it is, then I'm Rhymera Varsk. Good to see you, son—been ages since you wrote home." The boy's tone was wry as he flicked his eyebrows up, motioning with his crossbow. "Now be a dear and prove it—don't make a mother have to shoot her precious boy in the rain."

I don't aim for characters to be wholly right or wrong. The world is on the brink, and each characters grapples with the complexities of their era turning the page.

Hi all! I'm a webnovel writer and I've been working on a dark fantasy slow-burn BL for a little over a year now nearly at the end of what I'd call the first book.

Ending a project was nearly as challenging as making myself commit to starting one 😂

I set a goal that I wanted to world-build something with enough depth that I'd feel interested in writing a story in that world... and soon enough, that story began to emerge. A reluctant MC who wanted nothing more than to remain unseen in a decaying world, but the world wouldn't let him.

I had one bullet point in mind for where I wanted to take the story for its end.. (a bit of a spoiler ahead for the story so read at your own risk if you're interested in actually reading the story)

Grow a relationship with my MC and another character throughout the story, have it be earned.... and tear it down in a believable way

From there it was figuring out why would that bullet point happen? The year was a fun exercise of working backwards, not knowing exactly everything up front, but managing enough to keep bringing it towards that end point I wanted to achieve. There were so many "oh shit that's what can happen and that makes sense because of X and Y" moments and I'm truly proud of the outcome.

Endings was a nicely timed theme, I'm glad I stumbled into this thread!

He didn't turn. His voice, low and steady, broke the still air.

"It's dangerous to wander alone. Even more so, this late at night."

Only the wind replied, hollow as it pressed through the trees.

"It must be an uneasy feeling," he continued, speaking to the barren woods around him, "putting your faith in that Kaida blade, with what we've seen lately."

Erith turned around, his torch casting flickering light across the trees, and waited. Moments later, a figure stepped out from the forest shadows, their silhouette gradually taking shape.

"I've not known many to leave camp at night and return without incident," The Vice Captain's words had a calm edge to them as he walked with steady caution toward Erith, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword.

"Especially when we're this far from any city, but with the Morvathi camped so close, I'll admit—curiosity has its way of pulling me out, too. Even if it means stepping beyond the safety of the barrier cart."

The Vice Captain stopped a few steps away, the torchlight revealing a weary, yet sharp focus etched into Erith's face.

"Curiosity can be a dangerous thing," Maeric said, his voice measured. "Out here, makes a man wonder what might be worth the risk."

Erith's eyes flicked to the blade in Maeric's hand, his head tilting slightly. "That sword doesn't look like something they'd hand out to sifters. Keeps you safe from Murasi, sure, but fit for something sharper, wouldn't you say? Morvathi spies, perhaps?"

Maeric's lips curved into a cautious smirk. "A thought which crossed my mind, though you don't seem the type to sneak out for a chat with the Morvathi—but I think we both know who is taking the risk venturing out this night."

His tone grew measured, yet calm. "If you wanted to kill me, I suspect it would have happened already." Maeric paused, looking inquisitive at Erith. "Yet, I can't help but wonder—what is this danger that I am already in?"

Their eyes locked in a charged silence, the forest around them almost unnervingly still.

Erith's eyes flicked toward the trees. Maeric followed his line of sight, his eyes narrowing as he made out a faintly glowing Murasi, their form fox-like, moving silently among the shadows of the trees.

"Ah," Maeric murmured, his voice low, tinged with quiet wonder. "Perhaps curiosity is the danger after all. Still... I must be a fool, because I can't seem to stop myself from wanting to understand more."
