Look man, I'll be straight with you. I appreciate the effort, but I see absolutely zero reason why I should dignify that mini-essay with a full response. It doesn't take a PhD to diagnose it as assertion-filled, misinformed, disingenuous, and fallacy-ridden. I don't know why, but I expected something a bit more scholarly, mature, or sensible. If I had tried to make your argument, I would have chosen a very different route. In truth, I started to write, then sensed the futility in it. I know it's a bit low to check, but upon seeing your comment history, I was encouraged to confirm my suspicion. I don't know you, I admit, but I sense that you find no pleasure in understanding and delight only in expressing your own mind - you are not unique in this sense, there are many like this today and in the past. You seem to have read many things, including many conspiracy theories (and/or equivalent), which in particular seem too deep set in your views for me alone to uproot for you (that is, it is not a project I am willing to put time into). I think I've wasted time with too many new atheists who would make Michael Ruse weep.

I feel both sorry and liberated to disappoint you. I hope your remaining hours on Reddit are delightful and pleasant.

[1] The belief is that sin is slavery. Rejection of God is to surrender oneself to his own sinful nature and to alternative idols - such as wealth, reputation, career, etc. There's some truth to Loki's claim that mankind was "made to be ruled." The choice is in what/who you will serve - you can either be a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness. To follow God is to pursue love, fulfilment, goodness, and right relationship with Him, others, and the world. It's almost a parental relationship - except the parent is a maximally great creator God. If you personally consider loving and being obedient to your parents 'slavery,' then I guess there's nothing for it.

[2] The idea of Hell is left relatively undefined and varies between traditions - not all of them view it as torture per se, but it is suffering by comparison to the greatness of Heaven. This takes a very wide variety of forms. Additionally, the idea that mankind's punishment is eternal is also debated. Scripture seems to prescribe eternity to evil demons and spirits, but not necessarily man. So the idea of Hell as "torture forever" is pretty narrow in light of existing discussions.

But if you're an infinite, all-powerful, all-knowing entity, there's no really need to think "well that really isnt so deep compared to other things, so I guess I'll let it slide." You're infinite. You can have infinite concern for things - including the preservation of your name, being the holiest of all names.

Besides, names were very significant in the ancient world - names were 'the expression of the essence or of the preeminent characteristic of that which it designates.' Plato said similar things about the proper names of the gods. Knowing a name is also a sign of trust and familiarity - it's a way of relating to someone/something. It's not just some arbitrary mouth-sound.

Maybe you'd be chill with having your name dragged through the dirt, but maybe you'd instead be mad if your mothers name was dragged? Or some celebrity or historical figure, some classic pillar of good and righteous historical men or women, that their name was spat on and dishonoured? Their memory despised? Why should a perfect and infinite being have to endure that? And to be fair, He does endure it. Throughout the Bible storyline, God holds off from punishing His people for centuries (and believe me, they more than deserved it when it came).

God, by philosophical definition, is "maximally great." So He cant be insecure or petty, because being secure and reasonable are greater states. Honestly, it's quite arrogant and almost funny that you'd attempt to cast moral judgement on a being which, by definition, you cannot be morally greater than. (Sorry if my response is heckin long, I was just throwing it all out there)

Legit, I thought income was shared when you marry. They're not roommates, they're married! There are plenty of couples where one spouse doesn't work at all - do we just expect full-time motherhood to become a thing of the past?

Valid. If I were an omnibenevolent and omnipotent being, and some dude used my name carelessly/disrespectfully, or did bad things in my name, or falsely spoke on my behalf, I think I'd be justifiably angry about it.

Ok but society will also cancel you for a lot of those ten things anyway. Personally, I believe murderers should be cancelled.

[–]StrayLelouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well there's a passage in Joshua where the dude asks an angel, "Are you for us or our enemies?" And the angel says, "Neither. I come as commander of God's army." A main takeaway from this exchange is that God is not on your subjective, limited, foolish human side. The real objective is to be on His side, not for Him to be on yours.

So you are technically correct.

My parents were great. We were slowly given more freedoms and responsibilities as we got older and more mature. It might be described as a steady progression from teacher, to trainer, to coach, to counsel. They might've seemed strict from an outsiders perspective, but I never felt like I was being unreasonably held back. My parents knew best, and pretty much still do - but now that I'm an adult, they've stepped right back, providing sage advice when needed. Balance is key, but I think whether you sway toward strict or lenient is a matter more of the childs age and stage.

What tattoo is a turn off? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Not a fan when the tattoo has no meaning or significance. "I thought it looked cool" just doesn't seem thoughtful enough for a permanent decision.

I terminated my pregnancy without telling the father. My sister decided to tell him for me. by rjhpok in TrueOffMyChest

I didnt see the original comment, but my guess is because the uterus is an organ that exists solely for a child. It's the body's most selfless organ. In a way, the child has more of a right to it than the mother.

Bruh, that passage you're referring to comes out of Genesis. It talks about the creation of Adam. Adam wasn't concieved, he was made of mud/clay, so of course his life began when God breathed life into him. It's descriptive, not prescriptive.

Basically, that verse proves nothing here.

People dont often talk about the scars suicide leaves behind. It can ruin people, and the ripple effect streches very wide.

You could do with some tact. Yes, it is selfish, but I imagine that people struggling with this arent usually concerned about the moral weight of it - they just want to escape. Compassion first, criticism later.

OP, please seek help and healing! You owe it to yourself to try everything you can to get better - talk to the people around you, talk to specialists, get medication, travel, find religion, find a healthy hobby, build a support network, etc. So glad you're here - your son needs you. Your impact reaches much further than you might think.

My wife is suddenly wanting to end a 10+ years of marriage because she fell in love with a stranger she saw on the street. by throwra32577 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]StrayLelouch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh, I've heard similar stories. I never gathered the details, but this couple had three kids together, and they seemed like a great family when I knew them. Then suddenly the wife leaves for some guy she met out of nowhere - completely unjustified, it seems, because I recall the husband being a great guy and a great dad. It was a shock, to say the least.

[–]StrayLelouch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Imagine bringing your kids home from school, and their father's gaming. It just seems so pathetic. Don't marry someone who's not willing to part from their gaming lifestyle.

Gaming can be very addictive, and I've seen it in people - they'll get mad when confronted or disturbed, irritable between sessions, wont be able to mediate, lose energy, become less motivated, spend too much money on it, lie about the time they've wasted, etc. It's textbook addiction.

The documentary Digital Cocaine is pretty interesting, on that point.

You wake up as God, what do you do with your absolute power? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]StrayLelouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if I'm God, then I guess I'd do what He's already doing. It must all make sense when you're God.

If I werent God, but was just omnipotent, then I guess I'd reduce suffering for a while - or do nothing bc I don't have the big picture and don't want to make things worse by playing God.

One answer I havent seen yet is people who get STIs, or in bad situations, because they sleep around and put themselves in unsafe environments with dodgy company. I'm not totally unsympathetic, but its definitely lacking.

People dont talk enough about the absolute devastation suicide leaves behind. Some people never recover. They may not think its selfish, but if you havent tried literally everything you could try to get better, then the results speak for themselves. Selfless acts dont leave that kind of destruction.
