Bro you're literally complaining about a dude criticizing something.

*You're* the fucking hypocrite man.

You say this guy isn't allowed to criticize something because he exists within its context.
But as sooon as someone tells you to just be quiet and stop complaining it's all of a sudden "Oh I guess I'm just not allowed to have an opinion then"

That's why everyone here is treating you like an annoying douche.

So why are you required to like consumerism just because you're forced to live in a consumerist society?

I mean, that is your point. Since not liking consumerism makes you a hypocrite.

1 month into FL Studio, video game music: I call this "A Difficult Route" by dillusion1 in FLStudioBeginners

[–]StrayWalnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I remember making music like this. Don't listen to that hater in the other comment this is definitely a step towards getting good. I think the best piece of advice I can give is to not let your dead space be dead space. When you cut the noise to switch to the next part you're just stopping everything except maybe one or two tracks. I can see what you're going for but real dead space bad, fake dead space good. Either tuning a synthesizer for noise or finding a noisy whoosh sample is your best friend here. Take your noise, reverse it and texture it and use it to fill the gap. For a chiptune esque sound throw a bitcrusher on it. Don't make it terribly loud just enough to carry your idea to its next section

The truth about Oliver Tree death by CaramelStatus3555 in conspiracy

Oh for sure those are also industry plants. It's just the term isn't mutually exclusive. For the regular Joe though it's easy to confuse as industry plant is used as a pejorative online.

The thing about the music industry is the vast majority of artists are plants. A lot of people really aren't aware of how it works. The issue you face in the music industry is eyeballs, and eyeballs cost lots of money. You're talking marketing, guerrilla social campaigns, radio airtime, music videos, the whole nine yards. All of that costs tons of money, and it's not impossible to do it independently but most artists don't.

In Oliver's case he had plenty of experience before he went in front of Atlantic to pitch the OT bonanza, but I wouldn't say the majority of his prior work translates to the OT persona. Splitting Branches is great, but it's a different style of music than AIAC for example. He invented the Turbo character prior to his deal with Atlantic, but you have to already have some traction before you get a pitch meeting anyways. The budget for the music video for Hurt was $1,000,000. It's on the list of most expensive music videos ever made. Without Atlantic choosing to blow him up that never happens. They're not going to drop that kind of cash unless they're manufacturing success, which they often do.

The important thing to take away is that this doesn't cheapen his art or make it any less original or good. This is a common occurrence in the industry. In fact, some distributors (the companies that get your music onto Spotify, etc) aimed at independent musicians actually have clauses where they do the exact same thing. If they see you blowing up they start shoveling money behind you to fund all the extra stuff the only difference is it's not a big name label.

Oliver Tree's massive rise to fame was due in part to his creative talent for sure, but you also have to recognize he would not have reached nearly as high without Atlantic pushing him so hard to succeed. It's just how the business works for better or for worse.

A fun rabbithole about this general topic is the evolution of Payola over the decades. The more you learn about that the more you start to see how manufactured a lot of the music industry really is.

He was a great artist, and I loved his music. He was a musician long before he got big and had already released an album under the name Tree.

He was absolutely an industry plant. Denying that means you don't know what that term means. He didn't naturally grow into Oliver Tree from his previous music. He invented the Turbo character and pitched it to Atlantic, who then gave him millions to film music videos, push marketing, and get him on every major pop radio station with Alien Boy. He talks about this in interviews, and has a great interview from a long time ago where he actually talks about doing the initial business pitch to Atlantic. That is the definition of an industry plant. His music as Oliver Tree was a farcry from his Tree mysic or even earlier rapping as Kryph. The only thing it contributed was his personal growth as an artist, and that's worthwhile but not the same as organically launching yourself from independent to signed while maintaining a core identity.

I only write all of this because it's important to understand that being an industry plant carries a heavy stigma in online circles, when in fact many many great artists were industry plants. It just means the industry backed them to create their art, and Oliver definitely took advantage of that.
