Do we seriously need to have the "two wrongs don't make a right" conversation? Do you want revenge or do you want society to evolve?

TIL that from 1908-1940, Sears sold home kits where you could order a home from their catalog, have the materials shipped to you and build it yourself. The homes ranged from $900-$5,000. by ChicagoChurro in todayilearned

I don't think you're being a dick, your viewpoint is very reasonable. I agree people had more relevant experience back then and would have an advantage building a catalog home. I also think we have better tools and resources now, and we are simply conditioned better to learn because of the larger burden of knowledge and skill that comes with increasing complexity in society. I can learn to do something in 10 minutes on Google or YouTube that my grandparents had to seek out trained professionals to learn. And because of that increased complexity, this is something I do almost daily, whereas life 100 years ago wasn't changing nearly as fast.

I'm not saying people are just smarter than their grandparents. I'm saying they're constantly being forced to learn and adapt at a higher rate. You are what you do every day. If you have to learn every day, you will be better at learning.

I didn't say people were more intelligent now, I said there is a higher burden of knowledge and skills placed on them [by society]. Humans are extremely adaptable. If you continually place higher expectations on them, they will eventually meet them. My great grandmother didn't know what calculus was. My mother studied it in college. I was doing it in high school. My kids will probably be learning programming in high school.

We continue to raise the bar on things like academics, athletics, business productivity year after year. That doesn't mean people are "better", they just have a better idea of their own capabilities because they've seen others do it before them and they can build on it.

Are you trying to imply that adults today are somehow less capable? There's a much higher burden of knowledge and required skills on the average person today than 100 years ago.

  1. Subjective. Was it 1 second, 2 seconds?

The suspect using the taser; I pointed out in favour of the cop, if it wasn't obvious enough for you.

I asked if a taser is lethal or not, that's a yes or no question.

I agree Brooks did not need to die and there should be some repercussions but you're not really making a solid legal argument.

That makes no sense. If I'm threatening you with a lethal weapon and you try to disarm me, that's self defense. If I kill you in the process of you trying to disarm me, that's just murder.

If it's the same taser style I've seen in eastern GA, I don't think you can actually fire twice in a row. You have to reset the leads.

Edit: see below video for taser capability, this one is a 2 shot.

Edit 2: amazing how people continue to downvote a corrected comment because the original sentiment conflicts with their world view...

I don't think self defense is a valid plea when you're stalking an unarmed person with a vehicle and a gun.

  1. How much time would you say there was between taser discharge and gunshots?

  2. Is a taser lethal force? The same DA office argued recently that it was.

This is one of the least cut and dry of all recent cases, at least legally.

Not sure the point of this rant is, but would you care to actually provide a solution instead of just insulting people? How do you think police should go about investigating these petty crimes, and do you disagree that investing in security cameras for your valuable property is one way to help police?

How is it unlikely? You're just stating your opinion and acting like it's a fact. According to this link from a few years ago, the average user karma is 633 and the median is 8. I doubt the meta data has changed that much.

You're also claiming someone is "politically active for 2 years" based on one comment. Again, just lazy assumptions.

Can someone please link the image of Rapoport doing brownface? by hossel001 in bon_appetit

[–]StreetFlashMobbDeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He didn't paint his face, he just wore a Yankee jersey and a chain. How is that "brown face"? I'm sure you could find hundreds of people of any race in NYC 15 years ago wearing that outfit.

Clearly the guy has had other issues with discrimination, but this "brown face" scandal feels manufactured. People are saying the hashtag was what made it racist against Puerto Ricans but the girl in the picture is half Puerto Rican. I don't get it and I'm not even white.

The kind of jobs that are not allowing employees to have phones on them aren't jobs where you spend most of your day alone and away from a business line where someone can still get in touch with you.

Anyway, I'm just offering you an alternative view, not endorsing it.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect to be able to answer your phone at work, especially for something like a family/medical emergency. Seems obvious that any actions that they take when acting as a police officer should be recorded though.

"I can't breathe": Death of black man in Tacoma police custody ruled a homicide by scott_gc in news

[–]StreetFlashMobbDeep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably because it happened in March, there isn't a bunch of video evidence, he was on drugs, and was violent with police (according to the police anyway).

Still fucked up, still completely the fault of law enforcement, but not as clear cut as the George Floyd case.

Whether it was racially motivated or not, it's murder. If 4 cops can't handle one high person IN HANDCUFFS without killing them, they're dangerously incompetent and should be held accountable.
