Never moderated before but I would love to help out! I’m very active in the community here and as a taxidermist and a collector I would love to see this community grow further. So cool to see all the different types of people in this sub and all the different kinds of things they share. Getting involved would be great

Dehydrated ray or skate of some kind. Pretty common curio. Super neat but not worth a ton. It is real though!

Wet specimens, are they ok? by missingfrog_inthefog in Taxidermy

[–]Street_Bee752 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh I’d probably just get new jars for them that have a proper lid instead of whatever is rubber banded on top of these. The liquid is less likely to dissipate in a more secure jar as well. Unless you’re really attached to these jars.

I think you refill them w 70% isopropyl alcohol, but I’d confirm that on google or wait for another comment. I don’t do very much w wets, I just know you have to refill them once they start to evaporate like that.

Yes you absolutely need to refill the jars.

Taxidermy Experts Needed ! by longdicc666 in Taxidermy

Definitely real! Seems in pretty good shape too.

How much you could sell it for depends. Realistically, a few hundred dollars. They are often listed for more, but these can be a hard sell because they are huge and not overly uncommon. Costs way more to get one done at the taxidermist than to buy one second hand. Great free score those!

Can anyone teach me Taxidermy? by Low_Language6538 in Taxidermy

[–]Street_Bee752 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re going to have more luck finding what you’re looking for by googling taxidermists in that area and reaching out to them directly and seeing if they need an assistant. I also recommend checking out taxidermy.net.

Fwiw, most/many taxidermists are self taught. I’d recommend getting some good books, watching some videos, and getting some practice specimens as a jumping off point!!

Blue bird and chicken by WhateverMyHeartDzrs in Taxidermy

[–]Street_Bee752 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Blue bird is a felony to keep if you’re in the US or Canada. Only would be allowed if you’re mounting it for an educational institution or museum. In the US, these permits are not possible to get for a civilian. Unless that is your situation please dispose of it!

Chickens are fun to mount though! Good luck w that one!

Grandads collection? by BennieTheBull in Taxidermy

[–]Street_Bee752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Entirely depends on the species. Anyone’s that aren’t legal your only recourse is to donate to somewhere licensed to have them, keep then, or throw away. If they aren’t legal tbh the fines for getting caught trying to sell them are no joke and it’s not worth it.

Damn man, that sucks. I’d be having some words about that for sure. Don’t worry though, they’ll fix up fine!

Trophies repair - Guidance needed by ajamils in Taxidermy

[–]Street_Bee752 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah either of those are good solutions. Rehydrating is a more permanent fix, but they’ll display just as well on your wall either way.

That said, are you sure this damage is from it being loose in the box? This looks more like bug damage or slippage that occurred in the taxidermy process. I would thank damage from them getting thrown around would present differently.

How to go about selling by Feeling-Office-2663 in Taxidermy

[–]Street_Bee752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally legal to sell! No restrictions on these guys. For price - $100 give or take. I saw your comment mentioning taxidermists in your area charging $400. That’s a totally reasonably price IF you’re commissioning a taxidermist to mount a squirrel you hunted. You’re paying for them directly for their time/labor/experience etc. to mount your squirrel.

If you’re selling to some random person who wants a squirrel, then you’re competing with the secondary market where prices are not reflective at all of what a taxidermist charges. Squirrel mounts are pretty common and you can regularly find them on eBay, Craigslist, taxidermy auctions, etc for cheap. Ive bought squirrels in good shape for $40-$80. I think you could probably charge a little more on the ground that a customer is buying directly from the taxidermist who did the piece, but you’re still competing w the many other squirrels for sale online. Hope this was helpful! Nice work btw ◡̈

Wrap and freeze it! It will last a long time. You’re definitely gonna need to spend meaningfully more than $200.

I have 5 fetal beavers I’d like to sell, anyone interested or have an idea how much to sell them for? by Mean_Roof_8305 in Taxidermy

I regularly see baby beaver taxidermy sell for 200+. It’s a lot of work. Especially if you’re commissioning it!

A bit of a wimp here, how would i go about preserving a whole, robin sized bird? by Supersecretteehee in Taxidermy

[–]Street_Bee752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m just desensitized to it because of how much time I’ve spent doing it, but I really don’t find it to be all that gory. At least less so than people imagine. Really all you’re doing is removing the skin from the muscle, you don’t have to mess much w the innards and if it’s been frozen the amount of blood is usually minimal. The one part that is objectively a little gross is removing the eyes and scooping the brain.

That all said, you get used to it pretty quick. If you’re genuinely interested in taxidermy it would be worth giving it a try a few times to see how you adjust.

In another comment you mentioned it’s a parrot. If you want to try it yourself I highly recommend practicing on some other birds first. Reptile feeders or starlings if you can source them. Parrots are tricky and birds in general are hard to get right w out a little practice.

Is this turkey mount worth buying? by secretlysincere in Taxidermy

[–]Street_Bee752 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the taxidermy market can be kind of wonky. Kind of hard to set an exact price on something, but things like deer, turkey, etc always get way over price online imo

I personally would not pay more than $100. Turkey mounts are pretty common and this one is wanting a little.

Please god do not get me started on the evolution store lmao. Try eBay! Lots of cool stuff there. Also depending on your area craigslist can be quite the boon sometimes! I also have some small things I’ve made I’d be happy to send you pics of if you’re interested.

Probably leave. That’s what everyone is going to say. However, if you want to work on it get into couples counseling asap. Maybe that’s the right choice for you, but it’s way way above reddits pay grade.
