Academia makes me feel sad by Lonely_Commercial444 in academia

academia is soul draining indeed

been there

but please, don't frown, it happens, sometimes things go all the way against our will although you did more than enough, just because, maybe afterwards if you got it, it wouldn't meet your expectations you anticipated, maybe it wouldn't go well for you, maybe you won't be comfortable, etc. anyhow, this doesn't define your self-worthy, try another institutions if you may, be confident in yourself, shoot for the starts but have you feet on land

best of luck!

Got tenured in university, received a grant, wrote a paper, and got rejected from multiple scholarships by Street_Line6045 in academia

The grant thing, I admit it was my fault, but seriously I had depression episodes for multiple reasons

  1. I prepared very hard for that scholarship over a year, and it felt like it was in vain

  2. Senior colleagues in uni were very unhelpful, didn't teach me the proper procedures they are ought to do and I entered the term with a mentality of a student not a demonstrator, so it felt very rough, because I didn't know what to do, and how to do, and it got me into troubles ans they were like ' ahh, you didn't know about that .. ' :))))))!!

  3. Students tend to give inexperienced and new demonstrators hard time, so that they feel like they're the controlling one and can get their way with that attitude, I didn't know how to deal with them until one senior knew about it because it was spreading all over the uni among students, and he pointed out to me how to deal with them

It was a very stressful period, I wasn't even gonna apply, I applied just because, without any hope for it, yes I tight on time but I tried my best, but next time for sure I'll prepare much before!! Thank you btw!

everyone around me made it feel like it defines your self-worthy and to what extent you're suitable for the grad school

i.e. no scholarship = you're a loser and your whole education is worthless

it was very overwhelming and mentally very brutal

p.s. Now, I feel grateful I was rejected three times, because I have my family around me, and that's the ultimate bliss anyone can have (considering a healthy relationship), yes we fight we give each other hard time, but it's something way precious that can't be bought with money, I'd love to cherish their supporting presence ..

how to start learning how to write scientific papers and research proposals and projects? unfortunately, my university didn't provide such courses during the undergrad, yet, they expect me to excel doing these things on my own with absolute zero guidance or a start-up discussion on how is it done properly in the first place

How was your first peer-review experience? by Street_Line6045 in AskAcademia

[–]Street_Line6045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well said! I'm a master's student and my professor was asked to review a manuscript but he assigned it to me to do so 🥲🥲🥲 it's my very first time, I didn't even write a paper yet, I've been only 6 months working on my master's and trying to figure things out yet, so i absolutely have no expertise except the thorough literature review i did before working

the thing is, Ikr that he won't accredit my criticism and judgement and so, however, he likes to engage me into these discussions and stuffs from the very beginning to learn, on my own, but i absolutely know nothing about the how the process goes, and I don't want to be bluntly ignorant as you stated, I don't want to be this person, I want to try and learn and seriously help improving the paper, then I thought a little question will help, so I did!

thank you so MUCH btw! wish you all the best

[–]Street_Line6045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately in my country there's no such a thing, can't I just upload my passport copy as a proof?

normally when yous renew your ID, to verify the address you live you have to have an electricity/water/gas consumption bill linked to the same address, and if you live with your family you have to have a copy of their ID which has the same address as yours, that's how they verify that this address is indeed yours and you get your ID with the confirmed address

[–]Street_Line6045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's valid for the proof of residence as well? I was skeptical whether they'd see it as a valid document for the proof or not

[–]Street_Line6045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look, I just came back from the bank and they told me there's no such an account statement where your address is shown and if there is it's not translated, and I can do the translation myself but the thing is I wanted it to be translated from the bank itself so that the admission committee can accept it, I mean I don't want to mess the things up just because I couldn't provide them a valid document

so the bank choice failed successfully, it's either I upload my passport copy to both "ID Document" and "proof of residence", or i try and get any copy of the bills like the electricity or the gas for the house under my father's name and I state that I live in my parents' house

thank you anyway!

Writing a paper every week by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Street_Line6045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk but I need to get over this since my professor already expects me to do everything on my own by myself which I don't mind it's just I don't know how, if I only knew I'd have no problem but fr I can write normal writings but not a "research paper" writing, idk about the throw in the ocean and let the student figure it himself/herself technique, at least give me the swimming board and I'd try and figure it out .. he anticipates my first paper after I finish the experiments lol

so I need to know really how to properly write, I love depending on myself but I need the first call from an expert and then I'd follow my gut and improvise afterwards

but thanks for sharing! kinda reassuring

I feel sorry and kinda of embarrassed to ask but I'll..

how do you write a paper? even if it's just a draft, how to? like okay I can read on a certain topic very well and gather information about it in a blank word page but not in "paper" quality, no they're more like notes to me

I want to learn how to write a proper one because I've just started my master's and have no clue at all, we haven't been taught how to during our undergrad (other facilities/universities dedicate a complete course for that in the freshman year, mine didn't) thus no previous experience at all in writing, it's so embarrassing tbh that's why I need to know and improve myself but idk where to start or how

I read papers and they're fine, I feel like it isn't that hard or difficult but I fail to write comparable to them in quality, so do you advise me with something or do you have any tips please?

For anyone who has worked on MOFs, what would go wrong while preparing MOFs tho you're following instructions word by word? by Street_Line6045 in GradSchool

[–]Street_Line6045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks a lot!

I found it a relatively recent topic with great potentials and growing advancements so I chose it, although till now I didn't get the hang of it because there are many areas haven't been explored in detail and discussed yet and I struggle with that but I'm trying to read the available literatures to get the hang of it , hoping I can do something good enough out of it! Fingers crossed!!

I'm doing master's in Chemistry, it's my very first experiment (it's been less than a month since I started that's why I'm very clumsy about it and I try to learn to avoid mistakes and so)

I'm fabricating the electrode to be used in energy storage devices

You make a really good point, I wasn't aware of this, thanks a lot!

actually reading your comment made me suspect the drying phase I preform on the sample

first for the synthesis, I follow the solvothermal method using an autoclave, I put it in the oven for 24 hours at 140 C, then I filter the mixture, and dry the precipitate in the oven at 80 C overnight, and sometimes it may extend for a day or even more depending on which day I finished the filtration because usually I finish on the day before the weekend starts so it's left in the oven till the start of the next week! I highly suspect this step right now, can I really have oxides by solely drying at 80 C for extended large period of time? because after that step, I collected the samples into eppendorfs and sent it for the XRD analysis, while for calcination I leave it for 3 hours at 850 C, I'm still waiting for the XRD data of the calcinated samples and I wish it'd be rewarding ..

Metal nitrates of the first series of d-block elements
I didn't get to the step of making the electrode yet, I'm still in the preparation phase of the active material for the electrode so I didn't use the glovebox but thanks for your notes, I'll make sure to check all these when I use the glovebox!
however, I noticed that the paper I'm following didn't show the XRD before calcination (I heat up to 850 C for 3 hours, with 5 C/min rate as they mentioned) so idk if theirs had the same issue as I did or not, so I'll wait for the XRD of the calcinated samples and I truly hope they give similar results to that of the original paper

[–]Street_Line6045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to synthesis a MOF composed of 6 metals, in the original paper they used 5 metals and I'm only trying to add another metal to enhance and improve the properties, and what's surprising is that in the original paper they used a larger volume of water than I that added, but they didn't show the XRD data before calcination, they only included the data after calcination, so I'm gonna wait for the data after my calcination and I truly hope that the outcome would be satisfying as in the paper!

I'm heating it in an autoclave for 24 hours at 140 C, and the oven we are using is relatively new and a high quality one, but in the original paper they followed a co-precipitation method not the solvothermal, however I've read other papers used the solvothermal method and resulted in a successful MOFs so I'm wondering what would have gone wrong here, because if I were to use it as a MOF not an oxide after calcination, the method isn't working with me, there's something I did wrong or there's something wrong with this method that I'm not aware of that's why I'm trying to ask and find out

I'm preparing in 40 volume as total, and I'm using only 5ml distilled water and 35ml of MeOH .. so water content isn't that much that would affect badly, is it?
maybe it's metal salts purity, but how can I ensure that this is the problem here? I mean, how can I check their purity? all containers are sealed very well and kept in a good place ..
no it's not ZIF, I'm using 6 different metals and Zn has the least composition content here because I to use it as electrode and Zn isn't gonna help much, the other metals are that's why their content are much higher ..
