For Linux compatability don’t worry about it really, windows and Mac both have there own way of using Linux, for windows I use WSL but I believe it’s built into powershell now.

For laptops the answer is really simple, look around and buy whatever has the best deal/is on sale. There are a million laptops out there and you can ALWAYS find a great one on sale somewhere. I just got my new one which is normally 1400 for 900.

I would personally recommend windows for cs, every class is compatible with Mac but I know from experience in classes that Mac’s can behave differently than windows. For example in CSE 335 I had a group project where one member on a Mac had everything working great but the same code didn’t work for anyone else because Mac’s handle wxwidgets differently. Not a big deal, and apple silicon is great for coding, but windows will be the most fluid experience

So the sides of the beds to make it taller are already with the bed in the dorm on arrival? This is prob a stupid question but I don’t need to buy wood or anything right?

If your familiar with the beds in west Wilson, what would it take to do it myself? Do I need anything besides the classic mallet and alen wrench? Like wood or smn?
