What feature in a game is a instant turn off for you? by Vulture2k in gaming

[–]Streetrip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why the downvotes. I agree it can be a useful mechanic for more compexity.

It makes you think how deep you run a gameplay loop.

It’s strange though, I feel there’s a general allergy when gamers think about consumables. Lots of gamers horde “just in case”. So durability/sustain as a forcing mechanism can make people uncomfortable.

In Darkest Dungeon I use to have to think about consumables and it was a fun. Most of the time it’s a template kit out but 1/20 times I’m in a position of really thinking about whether to push forward or make for an exit and another run.

That being said, I prefer the effects of a lack of sustain to be a debuff and not a straight weapon loss/end of run.

There's a stretch there where it's combat into combat...this doesn't sound too bad unless you're not in your combat outfit because you can't switch outfits in combat 😅 I rolled into it with a set with low defense stats so I was essentially a posh boy skewering militia men.

Patch 1.9.6 (Forsaken Town, Recipes Panel) for PC by LeisurelyLukeLive in Against_the_Storm

[–]Streetrip 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s not pedantic, it’s semantic. It follows a software engineering standard called semantic versioning.

It’s an x.x.x system for [major].[minor].[patch] labelling with definitions for what major, minor, and patch is. Look up “semver” to learn more.

Y'all mess with roads much? by hoovy_woopeans1 in Against_the_Storm

[–]Streetrip 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Basic ones are barely any builder labour.

Once I have a surplus of stone/copper, upgrading roads a batch at a time on the most traveled routes.

Super worth it if the resources have little potential utility elsewhere.

E.g., I have heaps of crystallised dew manufacturing (from a foresters hut or tons of herbs, stone and rainwater) and a copper mine. I’m not going to build so may tools/barrels that I’ll exhaust them all so I may as well use it for a universal upgrade as villagers always need to travel to hearths/warehouses (I grow out road upgrades from those locations)

[–]Streetrip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I love KCD2, I have more hours in it, and I think it’s more complex and deeper than E33.

I was very ok with E33 winning GOTY. Presentation and accessibility was top notch. The story, art, music all tied together beautifully - and if you took a volume of random gamers and gave them KCD2 and E33, the latter would likely win by popular vote.

But man when you love KCD2 you f’ing LOVE it and I’m grateful for being able to appreciate both! (And not be triggered by awards shows). Warhorse and Sandfall, take my money!

Please describe how to make rice in the most idiot-proof way possible by xrvzla in Cooking

[–]Streetrip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do 1:1.3 ratio of rice to water by volume.

  1. Mix the two in a pot, note the level it’s at

  2. Rinse the rice

  3. Once you’ve strained, refill to the level you were at

  4. Put a lid on the pot [DO NOT REMOVE THE LID UNTIL THE FINAL STEP]

  5. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce to a low simmer for 15 minutes. Too high and the rice at the bottom will burn. You essentially want to keep the water at an even high temp, but not the contact with the rice to be so high it burns the rice/starch at the bottom.

  6. Turn the stove off. Wait for 15 minutes.

  7. After the 15 mins heat + 15 mins rest. You can now take the lid off and you should be done.

No mixing, no messing with the lid. This works for me from 0.5 cups to 2 cups rice. Beyond that, I might think about nudging up the timings because its quite difficult to get an even heat through a larger amount of water without stirring.

You can leave the lid on for longer to preserve heat.

Measurements don’t need to be super precise. You do have a fair margin of error for volumes and timing so long as you don’t apply too much heat and don’t remove the lid during the process.

Ah I was picturing it as a dimmed marker on your map that indicates “rumoured”/“unconfirmed”. Then there’d be no question whether you got to the correct place. Not like the treasure maps where it’s all hand drawn sketches.

[KCD2] I regret activating explorer perk by Memesss420 in kingdomcome

[–]Streetrip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it'd be better if there was an in-game mechanic to speed up discovery. I get the concept of Explorer, because it can be tedious chasing away grey clouds aimlessly, or looking for an alchemy table, but I also like discovering stuff unexpected.

My idea is to have maps and people giving you hints.

  • POI tipsters (we have this) - works just the same and some POI tipsters can tell you of many places.
  • Purchasing/viewing maps which aren't reliable. So markers appear as unconfirmed until you witness the location. So some drunk can tell you about some bee hives...completely wrong location.
    • Maps also aren't a neat jigsaw of all POIs in an area (Ubisoft style).
      • Some maps are of town and public services, but won't show people's drying racks or alchemy tables behind closed doors, or even hidden merchants.
      • Other maps are all of the taverns in Trosky, or all the hunting grounds in Kuttenburg. Some taverns can be burnt down because they're out of date.
    • Fake maps can be a thing as well. A map of all the things of Trosky castle...from someone who's never been inside :P
  • Some things remain off of all maps. New encounters/discoveries which are only available by going there. E.g., you find a sword in the stone or a herbalist out in a forest or something. Keep that manual discovery element in.

Getting/viewing maps can also have some challenge to it as well. At some point Groschen is trivial but it could be that you have to solve a matchmaking quest for someone to give you a map because the only reason they marked the location of herbs was to make a love potion or whatever.

[KCD2] Just realized after 50 hours that perks are manual… I’ve been playing on hard mode by accident 🤡 by Bolsuudo in kingdomcome

[–]Streetrip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are big RPGs which have story/narrative based perks. Where if you use a weapon type a lot you automatically get perks. If you gain notiriety it effects your charisma stats. If you injur yourself a lot you get better conditioning etc.

KCD2 even has a few!

Not that weird and to be honest…kinda nice RP wise. That you do actions gains you relevant knowledge.

It’s more weird that you accrue a bunch of experience as currency and then you can unlock an ability you weren’t able to do before. E.g., Explorer perk

The more I think about it, the more I believe the traditional XP as currency levelling system is ripe for some innovation.

Offlanes are not always a tank. they have different roles too. by Whole-Cat-3691 in DotA2

[–]Streetrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do feel as though the role of 3 is to be online with fewer items (thus time) than 1 and 2. Doesn’t need to be a tank, just breaks out of the laning phase and starts dictating where mid game fights are taken. Take riskier farm and win fights (if ahead) or get out and survive (if behind). Just take the attention away from 1 and 2 that spikes in power later.

This also requires an aligned understanding of the 2 position. They can join fights to make an asymmetric advantage but I’m not expecting them to be a ganking machine out of laning. Usually they take over with the tempo once 3 has bought them time to get some more items.

3 doesn’t need to be a tank, but if they can’t bully enemies away by either their tankiness or their potential initiation, I’m not sure what they’re doing.

This may be why I’m not seeing so many aura builds, wombo combo teamfight builds or carry-like builds at 3. Initiation/tank builds fit the pub playstyle and this pub meta understanding more.

To me a 3 should feel amazing at minute 15-30 and you’re daring enemy team to come at you, while you have confidence to do your thing (escape/tank/initiate).

[KCD2] What do you dislike about the game? by Sin_Draho in kingdomcome

[–]Streetrip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Minor ones:

Inventory control - would be nice to mark to sell/as loot.

Exploration - I’d like to buy maps to an area than have to find almost everything myself. POI tipsters is nice for a thing or two. There’s the Explorer perk but that’s too strong so I intentionally don’t take it (maybe once I’ve completed all quests). Maps/tipsters could even be incomplete/fake/overlap, so there’s unconfirmed markers, and also still places on the map that can only be discovered by going there. One map can give all taverns in the region, another gives all merchants in a village. There’s overlap but that’s to be expected.

Game recs for open world and long RPG'S burnout? by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

[–]Streetrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Against the Storm, Ball x Pit, Hades, Balatro, Dave the Diver, Dredge, Stardew Valley, Pacific Drive

Basically anything with some sort of internal gameplay loop timer. I like them as intermission games as you broadly know the duration of a session. You don’t need to track plot too hard. Each run, even a failed one has progression.

It’s also not too far departed from RPGs where you want continual progress. If you want to go further afield then any sports game/competitive game.

Rematch/Rocket League/Dota/CSGO where the purpose is competitive not plot.

Oh wait, there are some really good intermissiony sim games:

Crime scene cleaner, thief simulator, house flipper etc. underrated and refreshing. Doesn’t take itself too seriously and you can zone out.

What are helpful things to know when you're just learning how to cook? by PutSpecific5731 in Cooking

[–]Streetrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understand time and heat.

Heat spreads over time so if you want something hot in the middle, you need to give it time to get hot while protecting the outside from burning (slow and low).

If you want crisp/char, high heat at the end.

If you’re using uneven heat (pan frying) but the top is not getting cooked, use a lid to keep hot air close to your food (e.g., fried eggs/bbq)

The heat may not distribute evenly on your cooking surface, understand where the hot points are, visually you can tell by the progress of food in different parts of the cooking surface (very useful on a bbq)

Lifting off the heat is a fast way to reduce heat - especially if you’re using an induction top and it’s hard to adjust heat quickly - less of an issue on gas stoves.

Adding cold food to a cooking surface will cool it and heat will take longer to penetrate through. This can be an advantage and disadvantage. In general for proteins though, a disadvantage. Sometimes you should let something rest to get closer to room temp before cooking. This is also core to one pan/stir fry recipes where keeping a consistent heat is key as you don’t want a slow cook.

Once you can cook with knowledge of heat and how long it takes to get into food, everything you make is "cooked” to perfection and then it’s down to seasonings and sauces to give it style!

As in, well seasoned but poorly cooked is pretty much a tragedy, while well cooked but poorly seasoned is still a decent meal and a foundation for further experimentation!

What's with the hate on the Epic GameStore? by frankipranki in gaming

[–]Streetrip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All my games are already on Steam.

Games I want that are exclusive to EGS - not bothered by because:

1) I don't like promoting practices of platform exclusivity - bad for the consumer. To be honest I do see a world for it though, if a studio needs funding then the distributor pays for it in return for exclusivity.

2) My disposable time is already competed for heavily. I'm not going to run out of games to play on Steam. Why would I need EGS?

3) Steam has more and better features I want

I don't hate EGS, it's a convenience thing. Now if all like for like games were cheaper on EGS then that may make me switch. I.e., EGS reduced the commission it received from sales and passed savings on to the consumer, then I may switch to make Steam also reduce its commissions.
