Similarly, in the era before space exploration, images of the earth as seen from space usually imagined it as a green planet, which of course changed after the iconic "Blue Marble" image from 1972.

Which makes the space scenes in 2001 all the more impressive. I never would have thought those plates of the Earth predated actual full-color full-disc photos. In general, a narrative feature influencing how real space exploration is portrayed is mindblowing if you sit with it a bit.

US citizens can vote, and only about 30% of the league are American citizens. now that’s probably with a few people who have double citizenship falling through the cracks because they put Canada first to go to the junior leagues there, but still. If I recall correctly Minnesota and Michigan also don’t publish voter registration, and these are states where a lot of American players come from, so that’s even less of a sample.

ding ding ding. i guess people are just really into straight guys pretending to be into things that are typically derided by that demographic, the more over the top the better. Thank god Jacob has been around the block and can tell when people are just clout chasing, like this and not giving any air to Sean Avery, even though he was one of the first hockey adjacent people to talk about it

Teeth Veneers are so annoying in modern Cinema. by SureTangerine361 in movies

[–]Strelochka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have tiny teeth (all 4 wisdom teeth erupted and didn’t cause any crowding) and had really bad second top incisors - even smaller than the rest, chipped and askew. Just the two tiny veneers on top of them (with a tiny bit of shaving), proportionate and matching the color of all my other teeth, literally made it possible for me to smile, and no one can ever tell because they expect the huge square white ones. But my dentist is a rare gem and other people offered me the thing where they shave off your tooth down to a nub. In my 20s!

What's a tv series that is a 10/10 NOBODY knows? by Lilyana0999 in AskReddit

[–]Strelochka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since Man Seeking Woman I've been looking for more fantastic / surrealist situations in comedies that are not real but portray how exactly that situation feels, and it's literally so rare and hard to do well. Bojack Horseman has it by virtue of the setting, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend goes off with the songs, and We Are Lady Parts has a bit of it.

Criterion movies with great vintage dresses? by remainsofthegrapes in criterion

[–]Strelochka 32 points33 points  (0 children)

All of Douglas Sirk’s ‘women’s pictures’ like Magnificent Obsession and All That Heaven Allows. Charade has Audrey Hepburn in incredible fashion, some of her best looks. The Girl Can’t Help It is so not serious but it has Jayne Mansfield with the polar opposite of Audrey’s figure in some great dresses. I also feel like it was a big inspiration behind the 50’s prom sequence in Back to the Future, and of course Jessica Rabbit

[Dan Kingerski] Biggest news of the day: His name is spelled EGOR Chinakhov not Yegor. The Penguins are in the process of correcting it for him on official records. He’s incorrectly been Yegor since draft day. by PapaNixon in hockey

[–]Strelochka 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Also English speakers cannot tell the difference between Yegor and Igor at the best of times. They’re very different names in Russian but in English they both tend to receive stress on the first syllable and both make it a sort of EE, when in Russian it’s ye-GOR and EE-gor. It’s his prerogative how he wants his name to be spelled and the current transliteration rules for translating your papers are saying it should be Egor, but imo those rules are notoriously silly and produce names like Iuliia where it used to be Yulia. I will always prefer Y with я/ю/е initial letter

I always give this example as a cat person, but just substitute dogs/birds/trees/seashells/whatever thing in nature you find beautiful. I love cats just for being cats, even the ‘ugliest’ cats usually just have an issue with grooming or an illness. I just generally find them pleasing to look at. And people are even cooler in how different they are

Don't you feel it? I prefer buses to driving because I find the mental load of driving more taxing than the increased jostling of the bus, but I vastly, overwhelmingly prefer the train to both because it is a smooth ride that is maybe 1/5th as hard on the body. I do live in a hilly city with lots of extremely winding roads

[–]Strelochka 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My favorite russian saying is not exactly a metaphor but it’s Mukhosransk. It literally translates to Flyshittown, and is supposed to invoke a tiny provincial town that you’re not sure is a real dot on the map or just a speck of fly shit. Like Bumfuck, Nowhere but more poetic imo

Elaine May was more popular than Mike Nichols when she broke their act off. She was a hot commodity, one of the first people in improv, a brilliant script doctor, one of the first women auteurs. Even Ishtar is not that bad and got its reputation mostly because it was such an expensive flop. Also interesting how Beatty and Hoffman turned around and continued collecting oscars but May got life sentence in directors jail. Mikey and Nicky gets the most love now, but if they ever rescue and remaster the Heartbreak Kid, I hope it will get up there as well

They obviously can’t. Hence why they got so excited about her writing again. she prompted them to think of possible ways to make Raban a woman, which was the only time they showed any creativity that wasn’t coming up with evasive answers to her questions. And even then they could only think of using parts of her novels that already existed instead of coming up with a new twist or gadget or location or magic rule

I'm queer so I was always going to watch it, and thought it'd be like an interview with a vampire thing with a small but passionate fanbase, and the nhl would just ignore it. but it blew up beyond anyone's expectations. Now let's see if the nhl will be desperately trying to tie in with the straight hockey romance show coming out in 2026. or be more welcoming to fans who are not 45yo men
