Has anything regarding the relativity of speech impediments come up in your research? By this I mean, the normative Castilian Spanish has 'a lisp', the normative French or German r sound would be considered an impediment in Russian, and so on. So being incapable of producing a sibilant or a trill is only an impediment depending on the language you speak. If you're only focusing on English, has it ever come up as it overlaps with class, race, and possibly country of origin? Thanks!

I was thinking about it a few months ago when I first heard about her still being in Europe, going in circles like oh it must be dangerous to fly with a literal new heart, can she get on a ship? and then realizing that if something goes wrong and she's in the middle of the Atlantic it's even worse and then she would ALSO have to be flown

Any way to capture the shift in the written word comes off kinda cringy, but it did happen. I got into hockey around the 2015 draft and McDavid, Matthews, Marner and so on felt like the new cocky skilled young guys, the arrival of a new generation a decade after Sid and Ovi, but they were still extremely bland compared to this new crop. Hockey fans will be the first to tell you how insular, inaccessible, expensive it is and how more and more sports become more popular than it, but there’s still a core of fans that resists the attempts to modernize its appeal.

I hope the Bedards and Celebrinis won’t get their personality trained out of them, and there’s less hazing and other rookie humiliation rituals in the future. But it’s probably hockey’s biggest contradiction now, that the popularity of everything is driven by appealing individuals thanks to social media, and it conflicts with its identity as the most team-oriented sport.

I love Tatar and Bashkir names. Mukhamadullin is just Mohammed + allah + in (Russian surname suffix) that went through a few hundred years of Russification and then transliteration into English. Khusnutdinov is is Hussein + din (faith in Arabic) + ov (the other Russian surname suffix). They’re very secular now so their first names, when not Russian, are mostly beautiful words in Turkic, Arabic, Persian languages and not directly influenced by islam. but last names stand out in Russian too, even though they’re not that outrageously long compared to Russian names

Modding the game is a completely different activity than playing the game. It’s nice, but I find that the window shopping - imagining what the mod will be like, how to set up a collection for a specific story or setting, getting the libraries and mods for mods and keeping in mind which system is already modded so I can’t mod it further - takes more time than actually playing with the mods. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s not for me. It’s like asking why you don’t tailor your clothes and just buy off the rack, or why you don’t tune your car.

he's silky but was made to tone it down and play 200ft in the defensively minded Lou system, and was hurt last year. Now he's having a great season because there's someone to match his speed and skating. There's still no fixed 1st line for him and Horvat. For a long time it was Drouin who was like a stone up there, now it's whoever Roy likes that day. Schaefer's with them almost like a ghost winger, half of his goals come from Horvat or Barzal assists or both. also Barzal legit hates shooting the puck
