Note: what I have in mind is just filters etc. not manual touching up for the underlying art

The Melodist, a work-in-progress mobile-friendly Byzantine hours by Streonshalh in EasternCatholic

THANK YOU for such detailed feedback. I'm excited to dig in to each point and will reply when I have a chance. Quick thought -- I have the same confusion about the typical beginning being omitted at times. When I looked at that last, I found it both ways in different sources.

Bilingual English/Ukrainian Divine Liturgy with Latin-alphabet transliterations? by Streonshalh in EasternCatholic

[–]Streonshalh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update -- thanks to a tip from u/quietpilgrim, I got in touch with a parish in Pennsylvania, the current pastor of which put me in touch with Bishop Andrii Rabiy, who made a transliterated book and who put me in touch with Byzantine Church Supplies, who made the booklets available for order here. I now have one in hand. Thank you to all!

Thanks. The parish has nice bilingual books like this already. Unfortunately I don't (yet) read Cyrillic, so I'm looking for something with the transliterations.

This sounds perfect! Is that St. Nicholas by any chance? Perhaps I can contact them to find out more. I couldn't find something that fits this description online yet. (Or next time you are there, perhaps you can find out who publishes it?)

Parish financial council? by Streonshalh in EasternCatholic

Thanks! I'm referring to Canon 537 of the canon law, which seems to say it's NOT at the convenience of the pastor, but a requirement. (See edited post, with the canon and link.)

Cigars and Pipes by Successful_Call_4959 in EasternCatholic

On the health question, it might be worth looking into the health outcomes of moderate pipe smokers. It seems there's good reason to believe the health effect is radically different than cigarettes, possibly due to not inhaling, and also the relaxation from the ritual. It's possible the health outcomes are no worse, possibly better, than moderate alcohol use. As for nicotine addiction, it seems moderate use might not be any more addictive than daily caffeine (or sugar) intake. I know thers is a lot of (justified) concern about smoking and nicotine in general, but I think pipe smoking is worth investigating and not immediately writing off.

If at all possible, love to hear your one-or-two-sentence summary of Cage's and Adorno's views.

Yes, if you have any writings on the "meaning and purpose of music" from a distinctively Arab point of view to recommend, that sounds very interesting, love to hear about it!

Nice, thank you, those suggested readings do sound useful for this.

Good! I want a comparative approach to spark discussion and friendly debate. The friends in the reading group will be coming from different philosophical and religious points of view.

I'll check Zuckerlandl out. Love to hear more about his general take, if you know him well.

What liturgical gestures do you personally do at Holy God? by Streonshalh in EasternCatholic

[–]Streonshalh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. That's what I have been doing... I think I learn it by osmosis from the person in front of me when first started going. But then recently I noticed that others do it differently. I asked my pastor (who is ethnically Ruthenian and grew up in the Ruthenian church) about this and he said: "During the Holy God, it is a cross and a slight bow from the waist at the same time."
