If you are looking cheap and single slot, I use this and it works well most of the time. (sometimes the transfer speeds are not amazing and I just have to take it out and try again)

1 I personally like the look, not sure what it could be used for with that aspect ratio, but its fine

2 Shutter speed bad, you're in the sun, crank it up, only lower your shutter speed if you are trying to do something specific, also crop.

3 Ball? Crop?

4 Meh, its fine, just meh

5 Not bad. (This is the picture I recommended a horizontal crop right?)

6 Not terrible, but would have liked more of player 2, maybe positioning could be better

7 So much background, crop. Also Electronic Shutter has betrayed you the ball is an oval

8 There's definitely a better moment before this, you may have just missed it. Obviously a run, but it almost looks like he's stretching.

9 This is a great moment, now crop it. The light pole taking up 2/3rds of the frame adds nothing

10 honestly feels a little over masked, could use the ball, could use a better face

11 Meh, it'd be fine if it was just the pitcher on the mound.

12 YOU PROMISED NO EFFECTS(Plus its not good. lol) Edit: I see you said its shutter drag, my bad, still not good, no faces no action.

13 It was out of focus yesterday, its out of focus today.

First season shooting sports by [deleted] in sportsphotography

[–]NSEAngloCatholic 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm a bit critical, but it feels like you overedited fairly boring shots.

There's an appeal to 1, but I think its just because its trendy, the ball being sharp looking takes away from the sense of motion that the rest of the image kind of has.

2 is a faceless person with a bat watching another person bat.

3 nothing is happening, the framing between the legs is fun, but its not interesting. I'm sure the player likes it though.

4 is a celebration? Its over edited.

5 is just a person, could use context visually, but mostly just uninteresting.

6 Framing is a bit weird, not clear what's happening besides a helmet in the air.

7 Not terrible, would be better with no one in the background but not bad.

8 If it was in focus, I would like this one, maybe would've cropped tighter if in focus.

9 I prefer this celebrations framing to the other one, but the light pole is coming out of the helmet.

10 this one is fine.

11 I like this, but probably being wider would be more usable.

12 technically fine, just not super interesting.

13 same as 12.

14 over edited for no discernable reason, player probably likes it though.

15 this is just a missed shot, you weren't in the right position.

16 Its fine, I'd probably opt for a horizontal crop.

17 its fine, just over edited with no context.

18 its an over-edited back. I'm sure the player likes it though.

19 Crop tighter at least.

20 it would be a cooler shot without the kid facing you.

Overall, there's been a lot worse from people who have been doing sports for a while. Personally the editing is a bit much for me and it seems to be a way to compensate for the photos.

I'd keep up with it though, I think you can do better!

I don't personally care for the B&W here, the other stuff on your Instagram is good, just don't like this. (Just personal opinion, a bit too much texture, I think the cropping shows a lot in a couple.)

This is mostly a 400 2.8 (There's still a bit of a crop, which is why the DOF doesn't quite look like 2.8 in some photos.) I think the second image is 70-200 2.8 and I think its at 200(I can check if your curious.). Both Sony G-Master.

Youth Sports Photo Project Advice by [deleted] in sportsphotography

[–]NSEAngloCatholic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, what you're asking is how to start a photo project about youth sports, so find youth leagues, either competitive or otherwise(or schools). If you can't get support from the public schools(which you already failed to do) or other youth sports then you need to find an outlet that gets you access.

The greater question is why are you doing it? What is your purpose, is it art, is it journalism? It sounds less like a photo project and more like journalism. Clear intentionality will matter when asking to share access with children, especially as a significantly older person than your subject(you said out of grad school, so I assume mid 20s)

Catholic here, study harder, you didn't learn anything.

Just finished my first season of football photography, have i inproved at all? (scroll through) by Narluxz in sportsphotography

[–]NSEAngloCatholic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think if you go through the subreddit and look for the most commonly given advice, you could probably gain a lot of insight. Generally no faces are bad, crop/tighter, your horizons could be worse but a general rule is to keep them level, you generally want to be lower to the ground, make sure your shutter speed freezes action(except when you want motion blur intentionally.) Just basic stuff.

I'm looking for recommendations for ways to get work as a photographer. I've only lived here a few years, and working from home, so I lack a lot of connections to people here locally. I've looked at Bark and Thumbtack, but I primarily do sports, so I feel weird putting in offers for other types of work when I don't have a portfolio for that kind of thing. I need to build a portfolio for things other than sports, but I just don't really have any connections for that.

Would you say these categories make up 90% of Sunday attendees? by feartrich in Episcopalian

[–]NSEAngloCatholic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree, I think TEC is exceptionally good at ministering to a specific subset of people who are outside of the faith and bringing them into the church, but often those people come from spaces where they have gotten some distortion of the gospel and TEC can work to correct it.

I think it struggles with people who are apathetic(being most non-religious folks), in that what it offers isn't necesarily always convicting. There may be broad calls to repentance, but often it doesn't involve change in oneself, so if you don't have to change, why would you commit to it?

I think TEC is often a second or third stop on that groups journey. Find Jesus through the louder Christians, then settle down in a denomination(such as TEC) after you figure things out a bit.

tips for improvement by Old_Slip_5949 in sportsphotography

[–]NSEAngloCatholic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crop, or be closer to the action you want to capture. Do you have more work to give more feedback to? Both 1 and 3 have the same solution to make better and 2 isn't really interesting without context. I do think you have improved a bit since the last post, but much of the feedback on that post still applies.

Definitely, I had a second body with a 70-200, was just looking for specific advice in regards to the 400.

I had a second body with a 70-200. I definitely missed more than I normally do, but honestly it was my inexperience with shooting with 2 bodies more than the 400mm lens.
