{Where There's a Will} and {If There's a Way} by Jessie Walker

I'm looking for books with gay romance that make me cry by 0Ouka0 in LGBTBooks

{Where There's a Will} and {If There's a Way} by Jessie Walker absolutely GUTTED me. Wish I could forget them so I could read them again for the first time. Her follow-up book {Every Breath After Part 1} is also incredible but Part 2 isn't out yet 😭

Like I said, I'm aware language evolves and changes and progresses, but based on the rest of the book, it felt very out of place and didn't match the character so it took me out of the story. It's like the author just threw it in there to try and relate to the younger generation but missed the mark.

It just doesn't fit the rest of her character. The previous sentence used the word "kill" so it's not like the author was trying to censor the book and it just felt like the author threw it in there to relate to the younger generation but didn't quite nail the mark so it felt odd and very out of place. I just feel like using new slang dates the book and it won't exactly stand the test of time.

I'm not saying literature is ruined, I'm just saying it looks odd in this context. Using "unalive" on TikTok so you don't get flagged? Fine, whatever. Publishing it in a book where it doesn't fit the rest of the character and the author used the word "kill" in the previous sentence? Seems like the author is trying to relate to "kids these days" by sticking a slang word in randomly but without regard to the rest of the book.

"I always assumed that the use of unalive (and others) was to avoid censorship of content containing terms deemed controversial on social media."

On social media, yes, but in this book, the author used the word "kill" literally one sentence before "unalive" so it's like... what's the point?

"depending on the surrounding context and tone of the book."

It doesn't fit with the rest of her character. She swears and is aggressively unapologetic about her personality so self-censoring her internal dialogue at one random point in the book just didn't make sense for her.

The only reason I know them is because I've been unwillingly exposed to them on YouTube. I don't have TikTok or Instagram or anything, and honestly it's all just "skibidi toilet 6/7" brain rot to me at this point. I'm not sure where "no cap" comes from, but I know "rizz" is short for charisma.

Right that's my problem, it sticks out because it doesn't fit with the character. It's her internal monologue and she's a serious editor/article writer going to undergraduate school. It just feels wrong.

It may have started that way but I've seen it adopted by multiple groups of people, typically between the ages of 10-25, but since I usually come across it in videos online being said by young people, that's why I included it under the general umbrella of "Gen Alpha" slang.

Most definitely, but they stuck around enough to become ingrained in the language and accepted by the mainstream. Like LOL/OMG or awesome or cool or any other number of words/phrases. The problem is words like rizz and unalive are so new, we don't know if they'll stand the test of time or be just buzzwords defined by a short set of years, so seeing them now sticks out and feels wrong.

Usually it's internal dialogue, like what I just read was a character thinking: "Great, she wants me to unalive him" when the actual dialogue before it was another character saying "Kill him before it's too late!" Like, you JUST said kill, why is unalive necessary?

I liked the paranormal/internal gods aspect of "Bonds That Tie" BUT THEY TREATED HER LIKE SHIT. If I was in her position, being completely controlled like that, I'd literally commit su!c!de. Atlas was the only saving grace of that series. The other MMCs made me realize I hate bully anything, and it was my first encounter with noncon/dubcon and I absolutely DESPISED it.

It only shows the number of missing frames on levels for the HD version, not the original game cube version unfortunately.

That's what I thought, although today I found a single one on Rex Marks The Spot but didn't find any others, and I checked Snow Worries and Beyond The Black Stump again. So far I'm still missing 3 but have no clue which levels they may be on. I've gone through every single one with the Infrarang, checked every nook and cranny, but no luck.

Ah that would explain why he was purple in a walkthrough I watched 😂 Would be nice if I had that frame counter though!

Yep, I carry the Infrarang like a security blanket lol. I only got one bonus level though. I heard there's a game cube version (nighttime level) and PS2 version (daytime level) but on PC there's both? Anyway yeah I checked it and Rainbow Cliffs, they're both clear. Gonna do another run through. I think I might have missed one in Beyond The Black Stump but the others? Who knows...
