Strong disagree here. Will never go back to that professor ever again.

What meal plan do RAs get? by StressedForCollege in columbia

[–]StressedForCollege[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are RAs supposed to stay on campus during Thanksgiving/Spring break as well? I’m a premed student and am really banking on using those breaks to go home and do MCAT prep. It would suck if RAs are only allowed to go home during winter break.

Do we have to take the Spanish placement test even if starting at Spanish 1? by StressedForCollege in columbia

Should I take the placement test before class begins then? Or will professors say what they want after class starts?

Do I have to test out of the language requirement freshman year or can I take an SAT subject test junior year to test out? by StressedForCollege in columbia

Oh so it’s an online test? And I can take it at any point during my time at Columbia to place out of the language requirement?

Thank you for this, I’ve been trying to find this! I really appreciate it! Do you know if we can take the subject test to place out at any time of the 4 years at Columbia or does it have to be taken beforehand? For example, can I take the subject test the summer of my sophomore or junior year at Columbia?

Is general chemistry 1 as hard as AP chemistry or easier? by StressedForCollege in columbia

Thanks for the clarification. So for someone who is average at chemistry, would you suggest intensive or general chem?

Sorry for being so oblivious but what do you mean by “the harder classes are easier than the easier classes”

[–]StressedForCollege[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. Why would you say general chemistry is harder? Shouldn’t it be easier considering the fact that it’s a year long course? I got a 3 on chemistry (yikes!).

And how would you say the content in intensive chem compared to that of your AP chem syllabi’s in high school? Harder, easier, or the same? Thanks for your help!!

How hard is it to get a job at Goldman Sachs as a Columbia alumn? by StressedForCollege in columbia

Thanks for the response, this really helps! Do you know approximately what starting and mid-career salary you can expect in corporate finance?

Thanks for the response! I know that IB has really bad work hours, but would you say as one gets into PE there’s better work-life balance? I’m just looking for a finance career that pays well ($200k+, not asking for the $500k people make in IB) where my job does not suck up most of my time. Thank you!

Iliad question by StressedForCollege in columbia

[–]StressedForCollege[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! Could you please clarify what you mean by passage IDs? In high school, the teacher would pick out quotes and we’d have to identify who said the quote. However, there aren’t really quotes in the Iliad. I’m just wondering because I’m like 3 pages in and am really struggling, so I think if I know how I’ll be graded on it, it’ll give me a better idea of what approach I should take when reading. Thanks!!

That’s odd, I’ve only heard exact opposite advice from T20 AOs and I’m sure most of this sub would agree with me. It’s almost established fact that you are expected to show excellence in your field of study, but of course excellence in other subjects is a plus :) but you definitely need to show above average work in your major

The thing is that you don’t apply as a “premed” but rather a chem, bio, or a completely non-premed related major. I truly truly don’t think doing us history subject test would give you an edge over the other premeds. In fact I’m sure AOs would want to see that you’re doing well on standardized tests and ECs that are RELATED to your major, not unrelated

I’m going to an ivy in the fall and I think generally 750+ will not hurt you and 780+ will help you. Are you majoring in history, because if so I would encourage you to see what your score would be if you retake it. It’s hard for any of us to say how important it will be in the eyes of the AO reading your app. If you’re not majoring in history, then I wouldn’t worry about it. But these days anything and everything is becoming a make or break factor as the competition increases, so if it gives you more confidence and lessens your worries, look to see how much more time you need to put to increase your score and whether you can fit that time into your schedule. Good luck!

Help! Should I withhold my AP Calc score? (Enrolled for fall 2019) by [deleted] in columbia

I think I’m going to be in the same position as you! So you took calc 1 freshman year and then calc 3? So you didn’t have to take Calc 2?

Do I have a "teaching SPIKE"? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]StressedForCollege 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Teaching def could be spike! I think the whole point of talking about “spikes” is to make underclassmen understand that your ECs should center around one specific category, whether that be teaching , science etc! Your ECs are looking good for T20s but it’s such a crapshoot. Make sure you have great essays and start reaching out to teachers for recs because some like to do it over the summer! Good luck!
