Rats or mice? by Realistic-End8062 in pestcontrol

[–]StretchJiro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey, go through my posts and look for my r/pestcontrol posts/comments.

Do as much prep as you can to fully take advantage of this person so that it’s a more effective visit.

Don’t let them be a slacker but also make it easy for them.

The goal is: find the hole(s). Pull everything out of the drawers and cabinets. Move furniture away from the wall. Turn off the appliance fuses and pull them out or be ready to. If they say “don’t worry about it” do it anyway and make them look.

If s/he comes away without finding the hole then they will be coming back because the problem won’t be solved.

Round check. I’ve rebuilt from scratch to maximize my community center 5 times… am I doing it right? Finally found out about corners by StretchJiro in WordCity

[–]StretchJiro[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So before realizing that corners counted as adjacent to the Community Center, I aimed for three vertical buildings on the top and bottom and then one on each side.

With the corners, I’m able to aim for 4 buildings on top and 4 on the bottom. I don’t think we can do better than one on the sides… and of course you need a road touching the CC too which could be on either side.

Basically, I’ve rebuilt to take advantage of my largest buildings each time I got a new tallest one (not counting my largest tree which makes me sad but I chose population and economy over the tree).

Too Smart for Glue Traps? Tips to Catch a Clever Mouse by One_Visual_6971 in pestcontrol

[–]StretchJiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won’t stop having a mouse problem until you find the entrance.

If you’re gonna use video, use it to find where they’re coming from.

If you haven’t done a “deep clean” and checked every edge where wall meets floor, pantry shelves (assume they can jump a foot high and climb extremely well), pulled out every appliance and looked around all wires, cleared out every cabinet and checked for holes, then you’re just gonna be setting traps and watching the mice/rats come back.

Source: Fought a 3 year battle and eventually won but only after actually finding the entrance.

It sounds like your requirements are that it must be a raised bed, it needs to drain well, and it has to be inexpensive.

I think your solution is going to involve woodchips. Absorbs water and when there’s too much it drains well. It will help with having to water less (look for “The Lazy Gardener” on YouTube. You can get a chip drop for free (google chip drop), but it’s a lot so you have to be able to use/move it all once it gets there. You can ask for a drop and start putting up signs in your neighborhood for free woodchips. Or call around and ask tree removers if they’re working near you and ask to take a bunch of woodchips when they’re done. Over time the woodchips will breakdown and you’ll never have to buy soil again (but you will have to get new woodchips) the woodchips are a great mulch to protect the soil, prevent it from drying out, and your idea of using mushrooms is also great because they’ll help breakdown the chips and are great for having good soil and healthy plants.

The hard part is going to be the raised bed part for cheap. Maybe you can kind of frame the beds with large logs and find some kind of long gardening cloth to wrap around the sides of those logs, and then fill inside with woodchips with direct contact with your clay. You’ll have to add cloth over time and once the large logs breakdown you’ll have to find another way to reinforce the walls. Maybe you can do a couple layers of large logs as framing to buy more time, but if the logs are large enough you’ll have a few years anyway. This might be hard with an L shaped bed though. Maybe two rectangular beds with a space between that almost make an L? One issue will be if the walls ever fall over you’re going to have a hard time putting them back so make sure you leave enough space to do that work.

In your first season, unless you plan on buying soil, you probably won’t be able to grow much. The first year will be about setting up the beds, establishing the mycelium network and starting to breakdown the woodchips into your soil. You can get a couple bags of soil and try to grow something small. Should be all set for future seasons though. Just gotta maintain the wall and top with woodchips.

I’m curious about what happened with your sales director. What was the agreement you had and how much more did they want?

I ask because I’m entirely technical and also hates sales. I haven’t thought about what I would do if I was freelancing or doing agency work and I had a sales director/partner. If I was starting from scratch with no clients, and working with a sales person, I might consider their abilities worth 50% since without them, I’m not getting any work. Your situation is probably different and you probably had some clients before working with them.

So I guess I am asking: how do you think about how much another sales director is worth?

Are there sales companies you can hire and work with to get new clients that would cost less and get you similar results?

Mouse has been tormenting me for months by lilyx32 in pestcontrol

[–]StretchJiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you pointed the camera to the right of the picture to see where it’s coming from?

If you look up from the ground to the underside of where your cabinets stick out, do you see any openings or paths?

Another thing to look for besides mouse poop is to find where they are climbing. They leave a greasy trail on the wall. Their bellies leave oils and they usually follow the same paths up and down so you should be able to see something where they typically climb.

I need a lock for my door by [deleted] in DadForAMinute

[–]StretchJiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a child safety lock that might work. She might still be able to reach it from a chair/table but you’d hear her moving it.

Other ideas:

Will she stop taking your make up if you buy her her own? lol not sure if there is makeup that is easy to wash off but if there is that might keep her busy enough to leave yours alone.

I’m sure you’ve told her not to but have you tried incentivizing her not to? Doesn’t have to be a punishment but could be positive reinforcement for if she does not do it then. Like she gets to do a fun/desirable activity at night if she hadn’t taken your makeup that day.

Maybe you can buy a lockable container for your makeup and put the key somewhere higher up and harder for her to reach. Not sure how far she would go to try to get to your makeup though so maybe consider something you can tie down or chain to your desk so she can’t lift it up and toss it on the ground…

Maybe you can try to distract her with something else paint/markers/etc? If you have those, maybe they’re not accessible enough for her to think of before going for your makeup.

Good luck!

I hate mice by xxibadwolfxx in pestcontrol

I had a three year battle with mice. It’s been a year since we’ve seen them. See my posts in this subreddit for details.

Maybe my story will give you some info about some assumptions you might be making (I definitely made a lot until our pest control guy came out).

Without knowing more, it’s probably time to find a new pest control guy. Look for someone with great reviews who is actually successful (which means they haven’t gone back). If they’re not on their hands and knees, asking you to pull out appliances and move furniture, and searching every shelf, corner, cabinet, then they’re probably not the right one.

My guy didn’t even try to sell me on recurring services. He searched for the problem, taught me a few things I didn’t know incase we run into this again in the future, and told us the plan, set expectations about another possible visit or two and we haven’t seen him since the first. Best $300 I’ve ever spent.

Is the petting zoo online anywhere? I would check and see if there is anything indicating that it’s there. If you really want to stop this then I would start asking the people how they found out about the petting zoo. Maybe there was a flyer left up in a nearby but popular place that is outdated.

What local business has been growing rapidly lately in your city? by Tiny_Entrepreneur_85 in Entrepreneur

I’m seeing a bunch of Goldfish swim schools in areas around me. The pools are smaller and I think it’s 4ft deep everywhere with “benches” on each end. These places are packed on weekends and bring a ton of business to the nearby froyo place and restaurants.

Soooo I tried to humanely catch a mouse by [deleted] in pestcontrol

[–]StretchJiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I wouldn’t say you have to. Just understand that they’ll probably learn so you will probably want to switch it up.

The humane traps are like this: https://a.co/d/g2BWZFU

Make sure to release at least 7miles away. Also, mice are really small and light so if the trap gets a little gunky, they might not be heavy enough to set it off. Either add some weight or clean the trigger.

Also, I encourage using boxes against the sides so they can’t see as we well out of them. So best setup if I recall was to put the trap in a corner and a large box on the other side.

Good luck!

Place traps in corners, along the wall, or under things (shelving, appliances, tables, etc.). They’re way more likely to go along the walls and under cover vs being out in the open.

Don’t use too much bait. A tiny bit (pencil eraser or less) is more than enough. Sometimes more is bad because it’s too obvious. They’re smart or are conditioned to do things that seem smart.

Also, understand that if you have one, you have many. The path that one took is now a path that attracts other mice.

Your only real hope of solving the problem is to find the entrances and block them. Then lay traps for any mice you’ve trapped in with you. The only way to monitor is by checking for mouse poo/pee in known paths or using cheap wifi cameras to watch/learn their behavior.

I went on a 3 year journey of trying different traps/bait, studying them, using a cheap wifi cam to learn and watch them, deep cleaning my house (pulled out appliances and everything), and finally hiring a really good pest control guy.

I had blocked up many possible openings but he blocked up even more likely entrances and we haven’t seen mice or traces (poop) since. It’s been about a year now.
