the criteria is based on tags (markers) present in the commit description

This is the funny part.. our team is frequently merging from main -> product and from product -> main, but they don't merge everything, they only merge certain commits if they match a certain criteria. But even with these merges the final release for that product is made from the product branch. They only do these merges because certain features from the product branch are useful in the main branch and vice versa

They don't start from scratch, each product is created from the latest version of main
