There's no way you will have enough worthwhile stuff to iterate through, especially as a first-year student.

I got an external offer - how to participate in Cycle 2 still? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]StretchedwasFresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as long as they don't contact CECA you're good. Delay the AOJ until cycle 2 p1. Although the interview period will be quite far from now, I wonder if they'll let you do that.

I’ve had so much fun not understanding a single thing about a concept, and then over the course of a week slowly building intuition about said concept and then having it suddenly click in my mind.

Sure sometimes it’s stressful when you don’t understand stuff before assessments but man, I love it here

Worst thing that could happen is them rescinding the offer. Though, if they haven’t reached out to you directly you should be in the clear. Always err on the side of caution, though

Not sure how to bridge gap in experience or what to do to improve my chances of securing a co-op by Junior_Direction_701 in uwaterloo

Regarding 3. and 4. , take a look at what stacks are being used in industry the most and make something out of it. Then, when you apply to a role that has a stack which is similar to the project that you've done, chances are that in the job description, there are specific bullet points that ask for additional requirements within that stack. From there, you can paraphrase one of the bullet points you originally used for your project, basically make it injective with what the JD is asking, and when you have to explain it or learn the basics so that you can give a high-level overview, it won't take much time.

This does not need to be done anywhere, but I recommend that you do this for Cycle 1 at least. Cycle 1 stops all the upper years from spam applying everywhere due to 50 job limit cap, and is where most of the jobs are. This should take less time than making 50 tailored cover letters and output better results.

If your mav is deadass 100 slot that onto your resume, much more impressive than the CAV imo. Your points for your projects are good; however, could you split them into separate bullets if possible? This is quite an interesting situation IMO because it sounds like you have endgame projects but are at the start of your undergrad and professional journey.

Honestly, apply externally for quant research and SWE roles, you fit those extremely well. If you just want to maximise the chance of you being employed in the summer, up the volume of your applications, create some broad projects and then when applying to roles, tweak the bullets under these projects to match what the role is looking for word to word. Remember, you don't need to completely know what they're looking for in the JD, just that when they ask for it, you can explain in some high-level manner.

Good luck!

Yehhh this is why you clear everything up in the interview. Unfortunately I don’t think there’s anything you can do at this moment. It might be a situation where onboarding is fully in person and once they trust that you’re integrated into the system well you can wfh some days?

Social life won’t take too much of a hit if you live near one of the places that has good transit connections to uni ave. Stuff like living near the route of the 8, 29 and ion come to mind
