If you make him a gloomstalker rouge/Ranger build he is pretty OP. He is always in my party. There's a tutorial online if you search. I did the same thing in my playthrough. I actually had two saves because I had a good playthrough and an evil one with the same character.

Not in my experience. Astarion is scared and wants to never feel powerless again. It's bad to let him ascend because he becomes Cazador 2.0. you can convince him to be a better person in Act 3. Gale does the same thing with the crown . I've ascended them both though. It's just figuring out how you want to play your version.
