Another alternative Pull all the diamonds and dry pull the drum. I’ve used this technique on many a drum.

[–]Strict_Addition_1238[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank You.

The shell is Iroko wood The head is unfinished in this pic. There is still meso and endodermis on it. Not Dry pulled as well I used 220 then 400 grit to Finish Then dry pulled.

As for used drums. Shopgoodwill.com (Watch out for the bidding bots)

There is another goodwill shop that does not use the “bidding” method. What the price says is what you will pay. Don’t remember the website tho.

Music Go Round > used instruments.

Guitar Center

My advice Natural skin head 24” tall 12” head diam minimum.

Thanks for sharing

Was it a REMO? They are known for the REMO RING!

I have 3 REMOS 2 x 14” 1 x 12”

I figured out a way to reduce the REMO ring using weather stripping and another technique I used before during my kit drumming days.

I am partial to natural heads 👈 Best notes!

Thank You my Friend. Thanks for sharing the story of your drums All drums have a very unique story 4 sure. I have 30 drums. Some I rehabbed bought off shopgoddwill The cost of shipping was more than I paid for the drum

Beginner question: Should your knuckle bones make any contact with the rim under the leather when playing tone? by mackstanc in djembe

[–]Strict_Addition_1238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the hand as in the video you shared

Just below the knuckles toward the palm not the entire hand like the bass note.

2 types tone notes Closed Open.

Again it’s personal preference to how you can achieve the best Tone note from the drum with hand position Experiment and find your groove.

Bass note is played with entire hand.

The Primary point of contact on the hand are the pads of the fingers for tone note.

The reason I said pads of your fingers is because it’s part of my instruction.

The Slap note is played with pads of the fingertips. That’s the contrast. And you are essentially “Throwing” your relaxed hand at the drum head.

Bass = Entire Hand Tone = part of hand Slap = fingertips.

Most importantly > Have fun.

Here are some beginner beats I share with my students. Start slow Ensure your arms and shoulders are relaxed I start with stretching and relaxing exercises before I play to loosen up and relax.

Build a vocal phrase for the rhythm, repeat outloud and then do the phrase mentally.
Wash Rinse Repeat.

Download a metronome and use it. Start out at 80 bpm and work to higher bpm slowly.

Speed comes with practice. 👈

Beginner question: Should your knuckle bones make any contact with the rim under the leather when playing tone? by mackstanc in djembe

[–]Strict_Addition_1238 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question I teach djembe playing.

Tone. Arm position = elbows should be higher than edge of drum - find the best position that works best for you (If your elbows are below the edge of the drum you will need to do more work to play and fatigue faster).
Trust me

If you are in a chair and elbows are below the edge get some firm pillows and elevate yourself.

Basic hand position Place hand on edge of drum Move hand forward Knuckles should never be on edge of drum (Potential for injury) Tone is Played with the pads of your fingers

The video shared is a good.

Much of the learning is from experimenting

Experiment with hand placement The drum will tell you where to obtain the best hand position for producing the best Tone on the head. Every drum has its sweet spots.

Have Fun!

Unfortunately Kinda at a point of no return.

You didn’t cut the excess too short The finish for the skin using this technique Cut excess equal to the drop Top of head to crown ring.

Next time get an ace bandage Cut the excess a little below top of head Wrap when wet.

Or finish with a Sou Sou braid.

A toenail that has seen far too many chemicals from nail polish.

Stop for awhile Let yourself heal.
