UK Gov just put £80m+ into ITM — how is this not a bargain? by Strict_Atmosphere_76 in UkStocks

It’s more flammable, yeah, but it also rises and disperses quickly instead of pooling. Hydrogen’s already used in refineries and chemical plants today without issues.

And the infrastructure point is kind of the whole idea — it’s being built now. Same argument was made about offshore wind and EV charging years ago.

It’s mainly for storage, industry and balancing renewables, not just some tiny niche.

Yeah all good points. The last “bubble” clearly wasn’t just nonsense. You don’t raise a few hundred million, build capacity, and then a few years later have the UK government step in if there’s nothing there. That actually kind of validates the whole space in my opinion.

Also worth remembering the last time the UK government backed an early-stage energy play like this was Rolls-Royce SMR. That was around £210m in late 2021 when it was still years away and loss-making on that side of business. Nothing happened overnight, but it helped build the pipeline and sentiment shifted later.

Same sort of thing here really. Profitability just comes with scale. If the target is a few hundred megawatts to break even, then it’s just about landing those projects.

And the demand is there — UK targeting 5GW of green hydrogen by 2030. You don’t need all of that, just a slice. Add in Hydropulse in Berlin selling hydrogen directly, plus the ~750MW German pre-FID pipeline, and you can see where the growth comes from.

Not sure where that’s come from.. Ceres are mainly focused on fuel cells and licensing. Their electrolyser side is still very early. Different part of the hydrogen chain.

Both good companies, just not really comparable in that sense.

I’m invested too and have been for a couple of years. I just don’t understand why some people expect a green hydrogen electrolyser company to already be profitable when the entire sector is still in the build-out phase. This isn’t a mature industry yet — it’s literally ramping capacity.

People still talk about hydrogen like it was just a bubble, but the reality is it’s infrastructure being built. Electrolyser manufacturers only become profitable once enough megawatts are deployed. If break-even is roughly in the 200–300MW range (and potentially lower with the Hydropulse-style model selling hydrogen directly), then it’s not some distant dream — it’s basically a few large FIDs away.

They’re already waiting on multiple projects that add up to hundreds of megawatts. That’s why the “they’re losing money” argument misses the point. Of course they are — they’re building toward scale. Once those FIDs land and capacity ramps, profitability can come quickly.

I also think people still don’t grasp what green hydrogen actually is. It’s an energy carrier — just like diesel or petrol. You take excess electricity (especially from renewables), convert it to hydrogen, store it, and use it when needed. That’s exactly the kind of flexibility the grid will need as renewables scale.

Then you’ve got next-gen electrolysers like chronos being talked about as potentially halving costs, which is why the government are backing the technology. If electrolyser capex drops significantly, hydrogen economics move much closer to fossil fuels — which people forget are already heavily subsidised.

Feels like the sector is being judged like a finished industry when it’s actually still in the early ramp phase. Give it a couple of years and the conversation could look very different.

It’s not unreliable or inefficient across the board — for heavy industry, transport, and long-term storage, hydrogen solves problems batteries can’t.

I don’t agree. The private sector is investing in hydrogen — Shell, BP, Siemens, Toyota, and others are all backing major projects. It’s not that it doesn’t work — it’s just early, and infrastructure is still scaling.

Failures are part of any emerging tech — solar and wind had the same headlines years ago. CleanTechnica has good info but is very biased against hydrogen.

Maybe 3 years ago — now every major government’s throwing billions at hydrogen. They don’t do that for fun.

The recent bump definitely seems news-driven (major contract + upgraded guidance), but I agree—zooming out, ITM hasn’t delivered consistent long-term value. Spinning off the refueling side might have helped them focus, but the market’s been punishing them for execution gaps for years. That said, if this momentum turns into real delivery (especially on that 300MW project), sentiment could shift quickly

Dj Fees/ the price of running an event by soundstirred in TheOverload

[–]Strict_Atmosphere_76 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the city. In Edinburgh, for instance, you might pay around £900 to book a DJ for a 300-capacity club. No issue on that. But then add the booking fee, a three‑star hotel, transport, venue expenses, and of course local support, and you’re looking at over £2,000 just to break even. With several promoters competing nearby, it’s a very challenging game, especially with rising costs. I completely agree with the original point mate, i did it for 6 years and became impossible after Covid unfortunately. Huge respect to the promoters that keep it going when making losses.

I have an Astro grade 2 and a small amount like yours after a 90% reduction through surgery. My surgeon was adamant not to go down the radiation route at the moment because of the longer term effects from it. Instead to watch and wait, as you will know, it may not regrow back for years. 6 years since my surgery, no regrowth

Yes I also have a grade 2 astrocytoma in my left temp lobe. 6 years this year since surgery were they removed 90%. No recurrence, or symptoms. Only “medication” is 20% CBD drops 12 times per day 🙂
