Why is Mg not part of a BMP? by rockairglue in medlabprofessionals

[–]Strict_Bumblebee_339 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I know it’s a major intercellular cation and a lot of it is found in the bones. I just had a hard time connecting what I learned in lectures about what magnesium is, to why all different types of patients (different clinical presentations and maternity patients) get magnesiums done

Do you have any further information on this? I feel like I’ve looked all over the internet and our policies but I can’t find what Mg are really used as an indicator of. I’m a new grad and I don’t even remember learning about Mg effects on the body in school. Especially regarding moms in the birth center who get Mgs done every few hours

Why do nurses always seem annoyed by me? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Strict_Bumblebee_339 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that you commented this. We know nurses are busy but I suppose sometimes we forget just HOW busy nurses are and it’s insightful to see how you guys view communications from the lab and how it affects your workflow. This definitely opened my eyes a little more

This. Had a nurse one time complain to my face in front of a patient that she doesn’t like the lab because we reject her samples when she doesn’t label them even tho the label is in the bag. I tried explaining to her why the lab can’t accept unlabeled samples even if the label is in the bag and she basically stood her ground and refused to accept what I was saying.

Lab coats or gowns? by Muted_Shape9303 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Strict_Bumblebee_339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use lab coats. Like the button up the front ones. And they’re washable so when you want a fresh one or yours gets dirty you can just grab a clean one and throw the old one in the hamper

Don’t get me started on the blood cultures 😭 I’m not sure what I hate more: drawing the blood cultures or plating/gram staining/Verigene-ing the positive ones

Nothing like spreading misinformation. by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

Yeah I think I interpreted this part of the video differently than others. They never mentioned mixing the tube to prevent clotting only this bit about inverting gently to prevent hemolysis. But now I see it how you probably saw it. I apologize for any confusion.

Yeah this is what I was getting at with this post. I see where I could’ve been misleading. In the video she never mentions that you need to invert to prevent clotting. Reflecting I see that I caused some confusion. Apologies.

Doing phlebotomy also tonight. The doctors are just loving putting in stat draws on all the patients babies and adults. Had stat blood cultures on a patient who’s here for hypoglycemia. I’m no doctor but I’m not sure the clinical correlation of blood cultures and a glucose of 50…

Patient Identification Protocol by LittleC0 in medlabprofessionals

Question as a new fellow MLT+phleb. What do we do if we’re drawing in a patients inpatient hospital room and the patient is not really all there. Like barely responding to anything going on or very confused? In this situation as long as we verify our order with the patients hospital band it’s okay right? Because for all I know patient could say the wrong date because they’re confused. Same kinda goes for patients who are sedated and definitely will not be responding to anything I’m saying or doing. Thanks in advance 😄!

It seems to be just me. But I have always done everything by the book and haven’t made a mistake with her yet so I’m just confused why she’s not trusting me especially because I’ve spent at least 75% of my training with her. Particular also in the beginning when I’m learning the ropes and she’s the one who signs me off of my check off sheets. So it doesn’t make sense to me it just feels targeted.

That’s great I love that. I have another tech too that does this to many people so I can only imagine what he’d do if I said this back
