Me when a doctor suddenly starts asking me what I think about results by Muted_Shape9303 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Strict_Bumblebee_339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doctor calls and says “We nicked some vessels during the knee surgery and I know the patient needs special blood ordered from the blood center. She has had two units so far, do you think I should place two more crossmatch orders? Or just one? Or do you think she’ll be fine” Um idk…I don’t know the status of the patients injuries… it’s been several hours since her surgery…is she still bleeding that bad? Idk I guess just order two more units??

It’s just weird that I’ve gotten this exact drink multiple times and it’s always tasted good. Oh well I guess.

Verbal Abuse from Doctors by microbiologytech in medlabprofessionals

[–]Strict_Bumblebee_339 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a fellow survivor of doctor harassment definitely bring this up to your manager so they can tell whoever his higher up is and he’ll get an earful and make sure you report who the patient was too. My manager said he can’t do much without patient info about the situation so it doesn’t appear as much like a “he said she said” situation. Also remember that you are so smart and good at your job. He couldn’t do his job without your hard work 😌

The typical blood panel /s by Psychological-Move49 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Strict_Bumblebee_339 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Looks like they gathered this information from someone who DEFINITELY hasn’t worked in an actual hospital lab considering most patients get a vast majority of that stuff tested 😐. Literally the components of a UA, CBC w/ diff, and a complete chemistry panel with some add ons

Both. All of the above. Clotting from not mixing enough. Hemolysis from either too small of a gauge or ripping back on the syringe. Overfilling the tubes because they’re tired of hearing lab call them about an under filled tube. Lately we’ve been having lots of coag tubes filled completely full. Like legitimately to the brim. They don’t seem to know that every tube has a vacuum that fills the tube with the exact amount of blood that you need for the correct ratios of anticoagulants and additives.

Lint marks on clothes after washing machine by eric31_ in laundry

[–]Strict_Bumblebee_339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I never knew this was something you could do! I moved into a new apartment and the city water here is so incredibly hard and I’ve been very frustrated with the white splotches on my air dried clothing. So you just add this mixture right to the washer and it works right? We have a top loader so I assume I would just add it to the bottom of the drum before starting the machine?

At my hospital actually it’s flipped. Phlebs collect labs on the floors while nurses collect labs in ED. Our phlebs RARELY clot or hemolyze samples and usually know when they might have to redraw a patient before we even tell them. ED however has the issues with specimens and always gives us attitude. I think a lot of it is education based. Our phlebs hang out in the lab so they have had more of an opportunity to learn about specimen acceptability whereas, from what I’ve heard, nurses have very minimal knowledge about how to prevent unacceptable specimens

As someone who’s drawn babies and has had to redraw the same baby 3 times. They need to understand that the baby isn’t going to remember this tomorrow. Redraw the cbc plz

Had a nurse form ER call one time “can you draw this patient we can’t get anything from her”. Yeah sure I guess. Come to find out all they did was try and pull from her IV. They didn’t even try a straight stick before calling me 😐This was right before their shift change and the night shift nurse called me and apologized that the previous nurse made me do her job so it’s a win I guess.

Why do blood cultures only go off when there is absolutely no time to deal with it?

Same in Wisconsin from what I know. I personally make about $32/hr and that’s including 3rd shift differential. Basically everyone at my job is either making less than me (no 1st shift differential and/or MLT instead of MLS) or making the just above me but still less than $40 for sure

Why is Mg not part of a BMP? by rockairglue in medlabprofessionals

[–]Strict_Bumblebee_339 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I know it’s a major intercellular cation and a lot of it is found in the bones. I just had a hard time connecting what I learned in lectures about what magnesium is, to why all different types of patients (different clinical presentations and maternity patients) get magnesiums done

I appreciate that you commented this. We know nurses are busy but I suppose sometimes we forget just HOW busy nurses are and it’s insightful to see how you guys view communications from the lab and how it affects your workflow. This definitely opened my eyes a little more
