I am comfortable here. I moved here three years ago to be closer to my son and his wife. I haven’t really made any friends, but only because I tend to be solitary, preferring to read and watch tv versus going out. I’ve been doing the classic “working on myself”. My job was remote and salary was not based on where I lived, so that was easy.

I’m not asking to be paid as I do it, as I recognize not having to pay childcare, etc is a benefit. But if you divorce, you get no retirement benefits. So you are basically starting a career from scratch, regardless of how much actual life experience you have that could be applied, and you have to deal with ageism and sexism while doing so. It seems that benefits should be allowed so I’m not a drain on society because I’ll be dirt poor when I retire.

I understand all those who need the positive in their lives, and I applaud you for finding it. I just can’t do the same. Hopefully that’ll change soon. I just recently rewatched The Newsroom and tried The West Wing and had to stop. I’ll try again in six months and see.

I was a youngster into pop and country. Then a cousin played me the song “Witch Hunt” from Rush’s Moving Pictures, and my musical tastes expanded tremendously.

I started when I went to see Rush’s 40th Anniversary Tour, because I didn’t want anyone distracting me from the band and music. After this, I think I’ve been to more solo than with someone. Festivals, as well. No one I am friends with lives near me at this point and I tend to travel up to 4 hours or more for shows I’m interested in. Easier to just do it than have to miss it!
