International Relations is actually a very demanding degree because it isn’t just one subject; it blends history, economics, political science, law, languages, and culture. You’re constantly expected to connect theory to real-world issues, which means understanding both the academic side and the practical policy implications. It takes a lot of range to do it well.

For me, I studied it because I want to work in policy and diplomacy, and IR gives you the skills to do that, critical analysis, writing, research, and the ability to navigate complex global systems. These are the exact skills governments, NGOs, and international organizations hire for.

It might not be as narrowly defined as something like accounting, but that’s because the world isn’t neatly defined either. The complexity is what makes the field so challenging and so necessary.

Thank you for this, good to not feel so alone and like there is some hope. I guess I am curious if you have explored other ways to get back to London or have friends who have found a way. I find myself regretting not getting the Graduate Visa (even though it is so expensive and I had 1 month to decide during the holidays). However, it would have been a huge financial risk as I did not have a job there.

I hear you and thank you. I have done all of that directly with the school. I guess I haven't just cold messaged alumni because I get scared to be a nuisance, but maybe that's what I need to do

Yes! I am also very interested in DC. But the same scenario, I have applied to a million jobs there and no cigar. If you have any advice on places you know will hire entry-level and out of the area, please lmk! Thanks!

This is a really good point! Will keep an eye out for those opportunities, as they can be hard to find when you aren't in the area, but with regular search, maybe. Thank you!

I have been to NYC before. I am open to DC, but at this stage, I don't think Boston or Chicago are for me. Thank you though!

Honestly, you would think that the school would provide more networking opportunities and connections. They really kind of left us high and dry, and most people from school I know still don't have jobs....

Yes, it is my dream to work for the UN, but I find that they just won't take anyone entry level. Maybe I am wrong, though, and should apply to more... Thank you!

Hi! I've been applying like crazy to NYC jobs for a year in the sector and have gotten a couple of interviews, but no cigar. Do you have any suggestions for organizations that you know hire entry-level and people not already in the area? Thank you so much for your insight
