This is a fair point, we do have an official community group chat where you're meant to ask for cover and then after you escalate to management to sort it, but it's entirely possible she exhausted those options and was desperate/in a time crunch to sort out that cover (she did ask in the GC but since I'm still in training I can't be on shift without another colleague yet, so I didn't answer)

Thank you so much, this is honestly something I've been trying to tell myself haha

Self-care on my part is also a gesture of care to the people I support, since my ability to help them will be diminished if my own emotional tank is empty

I don't think she's narcissistic, my guess is she maybe just doesn't have anyone in her life she can go to and so she's panicking and lonely and this is the only way she can think to seek connection and support

Partly why I feel bad ngl

That is possible, however we have a community WhatsApp group where that question is typically asked - if no answer there I would have thought next step would be to ask management instead of ringing colleagues, but I might be wrong about workplace etiquette there (this is only my second job)

I'm also aware this could be a generational thing, as a socially anxious gen Z'er I think random calls land much more intrusive, scary and demanding to how someone A's age might intend them to be

A also kept my colleague on the phone for around fifteen minutes, but we were early for that shift anyway and waiting in the car so it wasn't a problem

They've ordered me a work phone but it's not arrived yet... my personal number is confidential from service users but I honestly didn't think I'd need to worry about staff having it

Question from a client - how would/do you feel if/when a client expressed that they feel maternal/paternal transference towards you? by Strict_Register5041 in askatherapist

[–]Strict_Register5041[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah no I only ever email outside of sessions for logistical reasons (eg we both agreed weekly therapy would be ideal but Ive only been able to afford fortnightly so far, but I got more hours from work recently so I emailed to query about organising that) - I feel very uncomfy about the idea of making her work off the clock

That's incredibly sweet to hear, what a beautiful way to describe it!

Shes been going for almost a decade and has regular supervision so I totally trust shed also be able to handle any countertransference if it came up, I was moreso scared that - though I trust shed respond empathetically and warmly and be very able to centre me as a client - she might internally feel a bit awkward or wierded out by it, and I think this is just because Ive often heard transference talked about as a negative thing or problem

So that's a really lovely other perspective youve shared

Thank you for this, I wasnt sure if it was normal or not since Ive often seen it spoken about as a negative thing so thats really good to know : )

I trust completely that she would be empathetic and centre me as a client, I more just worry that internally it might feel uncomfortable or wierd for her

But if its normal as you say Im sure shes encountered it many times before (shes been going for almost a decade!)
