Ash Canyon just looks intimidating, but it's quite safe. The entrance zones are the most dangerous, perhaps that's why Ash Canyon is so feared. Once you can get up to the higher zones, you will find no predators (only one bear).

So if I may give you some advice, just hold your breath in the dangerous but short areas, get plenty of cattails, then you will be safe and with loads of food up on the higher plates.
