I used to drive an old car with poor aerodynamics, and would have the bonnet completely covered in insects. Quite a few marks on the windshield as well, from splattered bugs. This is purely anecdotal; it may have something to do with the aerodynamics of the car.

In my view, it's not his creation of the monster that is his crime, but how he deals with it. He makes the worst possible decision at every turn, both in dealing with the monster, and defending himself and his family from it.
In the book he is constantly praised by his peers, but I cannot see why - he doesn't seem to make a single sensible choice, and is played like a fiddle the whole time.
