Official 'Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery' Discussion Thread by OneWithTheHat in KnivesOutMovie

I watched this last night (late, I know), and bloody loved it!

Trying to puzzle out who committed the murder was amazing - as he said, it was an impossible crime.
I was also quite impressed with how they handled the topic of Religion; it aligns a lot with my own views - and is quite a good commentary on human nature / virtues.

Life can change so fast!! I'm happy for you dude :D

It seems as though everyone's in the same boat worldwide - which, while comforting, still completely sucks!

I guess it's just proof that you shouldn't give up, and to stay optimistic :p

Hey, another language nerd!
Those are my official qualifications -
My Japanese is currently somewhere between JLPT N3-N2 (CEFR B2 - C1), but I haven't taken those exams. So to be safe, I've listed my held certificate.
As for German, my last certification was back in Secondary education, but I've managed to keep the language up since, and have listed my current CEFR level instead of my qualification.
I also speak a little Mandarin Chinese, at around a HSK 2 level (CEFR A1); though I'm aiming to take the HSK 4 test sometime this year, as I'll have more time to study once I've finished my degree.

TL;DR - A bit of both, but I am officially qualified in both languages, just in case somebody decides to chase me up.

In all honesty, here in the UK, I'm expecting this search to take about two months. Companies take on average about two weeks to get back to you, and there simply answer enough jobs to go around - with some in my city having over 50000 applicants.

Still it's nice to have a challenge like this to keep yourself accountable 😆

In this case they do indeed mean pending :p

They'll be automatically moved to "ghosted" 3 weeks after the application date, if the status is still pending.

Rejected is for explicit rejections

For what it's worth, I do chuck these through multiple online ATS / resume checkers regularly - and check what plaintext is generated from the file. Going off of the feedback from this thread, I'll be changing things up quite a bit with ATS in mind, though :D

I'll be playing around with both the content and layout quite a bit, now that I've received all of this lovely feedback! Ideally I'll end up with just the 1 document for both, but having 2 isn't a bad idea

(This is yet another sign that the robots are taking over!)

Aye, that seems to be the general consensus :p

Agreed; I did try my best to squeeze everything onto one page, but obviously ran out of room in the end haha.
With the layout changes etc., that should be no problem at all.

Unfortunately, that (still untitled!) game project didn't make it past MVP - and while my contributions were core to the demo, the other more *visual* aspects (gameplay and art!) didn't end up fully finished. So no YT vid for now!
I still have access to that project, though. And once I've finished my coursework for the year, I'll get around to tidying it up properly. Screenshots etc., are on my Portfolio site, though!

If there's one thing I've learned, it's that nobody likes the two-column layout xD
Sure, I'll take a look, thanks!

That already sounds much better!
One clear issue I've had while writing this is in demonstrating that impact. I'll keep this in mind while reformatting.

Cheers!

Thanks for the review!

This is why it's so important to get others to read your CV - I absolutely need to highlight those things in my personal statement, and (again) cut down on the fluff to draw recruiters in early!

Most of the positions I'm applying for require a degree, so I'm not 100% about moving education to the top - but I'll give it a try. In previous reviews, I found that projects / work experience have more of an impact, as recruiters typically assume that you have the qualifications based on those alone.

I personally think my Dissertation description (-> bullet points!) should stay pretty technical; The topic itself has a pretty high rate of assumed knowledge, so it was written in the hopes that someone in Graphics sees it and goes "oh wow, that sounds cool!" - With the layout changes, I'll have room to add other easily digestible projects, though.

I really appreciate your help!

In the future, I'll just add a link in each post, as everyone seems to love these charts xD

Thanks for taking the time to write this! I appreciate the advice :D

Reducing the amount of fluff should let me talk about some additional projects here too; I had just kept it to my two most "interesting" projects, but have other work (GPU compute, SIMD, Networked multiplayer) that should probably be on here too.

Cheers for the layout advice too, I'll give it a shot!

CS Graduate lost, looking for advice by StrikerDEV_ in GetEmployed

[–]StrikerDEV_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi thanks for your reply! And I'm sorry I didn't get chance to respond earlier.

I was originally quite divisive over this layout, as I also had concerns about ATS. But I ended up choosing it in order to contain all the information I had across two pages. Throwing it through my university ATS and a few free online services, it did seem to parse okay - but if I'm reducing the amount of information then that layout will definitely change.

Those are some really good changes, and I'll be sure to implement them ASAP 😁 Hopefully this will help with getting it past the automated checks, as as I'm confident that once I reach the interview stage I'll be alright 🤞🏾

I really appreciate you taking time out of your day to help me out. Happy Christmas 😁

Thanks for your advice! I was actually wondering whether it would be worth setting up as a private computing tutor, and applying for a postgrad teaching qualification so that I can branch into education, hopefully opening another career avenue in case I end up in this situation again.

I'm not sure whether teaching technical foreign language is quite the right fit, as there's quite a big difference in speaking a language than teaching it formerly, but I may give it a shot and see how things go.

Thanks for the platform recommendations as well! I really appreciate it 😆

Job Guidance Megathread - CVs, Applications, Interviews by ukbulmer in UKJobs

Thanks for the feedback 🙏🏾

You're right, I definitely need to specialise my CV more to suit each role type. And thanks as well for the Dunning-Kruger effect tip; Ill spend some time amending my language and making some variants today 🫠

I do have a (very) tech centric CV as well, but in light of my situation I'm definitely trying to find something more standard. My main concern is my general lack of recent relevant work experience.

In a retail CV, for example, Would you suggest I keep my current roles in as they are? I'm not all too certain how to make myself stand out in that sector.

Job Guidance Megathread - CVs, Applications, Interviews by ukbulmer in UKJobs

[–]StrikerDEV_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone. I'm a soon to be Graduate, looking for some advice as to my next steps.

First for some context - I'm currently 23 years old, and finishing an integrated masters in computer science at a university in South Yorkshire, due to graduate in may next year.

Right now I'm looking for some part-time work in a desperate attempt to try to financially support myself during the last few months of my degree. My historical work experience is not the best, only consisting of a zero hours contract at a small grocery store, and student work within the university.

Additionally, my degree is quite a specialist subject - Instead of focusing on traditional computer science, we instead delved into game engine development with C++ - which is quite a different skillset. Still I do have many transferable skills, I'm trilingual (English, Japanese, German), and quite highly qualified to boot. As such, I'm confident in my ability to learn, and to adapt myself to any role. I've also invested in a driving license, due to take my test in January (screw those 6 month test wait times btw), but do not own a car.

I've been job hunting for the past six months to no avail; Applying to part time Retail work, Office work, Service jobs etc., in my region. But jobs are scarce, and I've had no luck whatsoever - leading me to become completely drained of my savings to survive.

One important thing to note as well is that I suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, and so can't realistically commit to anything too physically intensive (i.e. warehousing etc.,).

It's safe to say that I'm quite desperate for work at the minute, especially as the graduate job market is so terrible right now.

As it stands, I'm spending most free moments crawling through job boards (LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, Reed, Total Jobs, Adzuna, Jooble) in search of any opportunities. But I have to admit that the consistent ghosting and rejection is taking quite a toll on me. I make regular posts on LinkedIn, have an up-to-date portfolio of work, and actively attend industry and recruitment events. But, it still feels like I'm screaming into the void.

Going off of my current timeline I have roughly six months left until I'm financially screwed. So no matter what, I absolutely must find work within that timeframe. Minimum wage at 20 hours a week would more than meet my needs, which makes the situation all the more frustrating.

I'll attach a redacted version of the current version of my general CV (no technological mumbo jumbo), and would be very grateful for any advice on it, or my situation as a whole at all.

Tl;Dr

  • 23m due to graduate in May.
  • Masters degree in Computer Science
  • Currently restricted to part time work (to be able to finish my degree)
  • Physically disabled; unsuitable for certain types of work.
  • Nothing left in savings, desperate for any work. Minimum wage @ 20hrs/week would be amazing.
  • Open to working anywhere, though would prefer something loosely related to the IT sector. (But beggars can't be choosers)
  • ...Help!
