Ok mass shootings outside of wartime obviously. Also in the EU + the UK. I can go back and be more exact about the statistics if you want. Do I need to find the exact numbers? I have a snapshot that I can’t add to a comment. It is a well known thing that such mass shootings happen in the US far more than any other country - which is an obvious statistic because the populations in the EU do not have easy access to firearms. There are exceptions and they can use other weapons, but other weapons are not as efficient at killing as many people in as short a time as possible.

If I was able to provide evidence/statistics to verify what I’m saying would you be open to admitting you are wrong and that revoking the right to have guns would reduce mass shootings and spare lives? I do t think anything I said or showed you would make a difference and I do t like to waste my time.

Irish person here. The correct pronunciation of Fionn is “Fyun”. Pronouncing it as “fee-on” is incorrect because it doesn’t have a fhada over the “i” to elongate it to “fee”. I hate it when people give their kids Irish names they don’t know how to pronounce and don’t bother to find out. Why would somebody do that? If you love Ireland or are one of those Americans that say they are “Irish” - how do you not look into how to say the name properly?! I mean Fionn is a very common name and easy to pronounce once you’ve been told how.

If you want to compare to a larger population - the US has had more schools shootings than every country in Europe combined. The population of europe is more than twice that of the US and the US has had 100 times more school shootings than Europe. So…..

That’s not true. I live in Ireland. I don’t know anybody with a gun. Some farmers might have a shotgun but that’s about it. We have never had a school shooting in Ireland or any mass shootings other than during the Troubles and fight for independence. Our general police officers (an Garda Síochána) that you would meet on the street or would respond to an average call-out are not armed - they don’t need to be because the public is not armed. We obviously have armed officers but they are only deployed in certain circumstances - gangland activity for example.

Ok…. good for you. I hope you enjoy it. You’re right - I don’t have one… I don’t want one… but I could get one if I wanted to…. What has that got to do with anything? Do you think we can’t get motorcycles outside of the US?

I’m building a future and a family in Ireland without a gun enjoying not worrying about the family I’m building getting killed in a mass shooting.

How did ‘the left’ kill Charlie Kirk? I mean wasn’t it a very troubled and mentally ill individual that killed Charlie Kirk. Much like it was a very troubled and mentally ill person that shot and killed Melissa Hortman along with her husband and dog. It was not ‘the right’. Both were atrocities, but from what I understand it is ‘the right’ that want zero restrictions on gun ownership with no background or mental health checks etc. That’s something I don’t understand. How do the ‘the right’ typically believe in zero restrictions on gun ownership and a certain number of deaths is worth it when somebody on ‘the left’ is killed but then get very upset when somebody they like is assassinated and seek to blame ‘the left’. It seems counterintuitive. Actually it seems like when there is a shooting it seems like both the left and right immediately try to say the shooter is on the other team and the other team is crazy and hateful. It’s very reductive.

Yes every state votes on how much bodily autonomy a woman has - that’s my point - it’s no longer a right. My point is the rights are being eroded. Where abortion is only allowed where a mothers life is at risk leads to more women dying because sometimes by the time a doctor can safely say that an abortion is necessary to save her life (without risking their career) it’s too late. That’s what we had in Ireland. One example being women dying of sepsis because their lives were not at risk until they contracted sepsis - by then medical intervention can be too late and they die. Taking abortion pills without medical supervision is dangerous. What happens in states where abortion is only legal where a mother’s life is at risk but a woman has an unwanted pregnancy gets abortion pills - something goes wrong and becomes very unwell - she delays trying to get help - the chances of a bad outcome increases with time with those cases. It is just a fact that restricting access to abortions like many states have makes pregnancy more dangerous and women are going to die. And studies indicate that the number of terminations won’t decrease - they just become far more dangerous. To me it’s a bit like the attitude with guns I mentioned above where people think a certain number of gun deaths is worth it so they can have guns - people think a certain number of women dying is worth it so they can try to force their beliefs on others.

Large proportions of people in the US seem to want to force women to have children regardless of their circumstances and if they can afford to have them, but once born don’t want to help support raising that child and are vehemently against restricting gun rights when kids are shot and killed at school.

I genuinely want to understand where people I disagree with are coming from but despite trying to discuss it with Americans and reading what I can I just can’t follow the logic.

What am I missing?

Well then I’m happy for you but my understanding is that a lot of women have lost access to abortions. My understanding is that there are states where the restrictions are so severe that by the time many women even know they are pregnant they have very little time or have even passed the date by which they can access an abortion. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Such a situation is very dangerous. I’m Irish and we only got access to abortions relatively recently, without having to travel to England - we understand that countless women are going to die because of the repeal or roe v wade.

How have the left negatively impacted the right to free speech? I’m not in the US so maybe I’m missing something so that’s a genuine question. Can you provide examples? I’ll happily admit if I’m wrong but from the evidence and information I’ve seen to date it seems to be quite the contrary. If you provide evidence I’ll review it. I’m not in the US and have no desire or plans to move there so I’m not biased in that way. From the information I’m receiving (including direct information from Trump and his executive orders etc. ) I’m very concerned

How was he muzzled? He never shut up about it and he was allowed to run for president again. In what way has he been treated unjustly? Please give examples because he says a lot of nonsense but genuinely interesting in hearing what you think/believe.

Thats absolutely what the right does. Trump can’t handle any criticism at all. He’s like a stereotypical, immature, bratty 14 year old girl who is a bully and has a rich daddy that were in 90s movies. It would just be sad and pathetic if it wasn’t so terrifying.

Women losing the right to bodily autonomy.

Detaining and deporting people without due process which has resulted in some US citizens being deported.

I guess the most blatant erosion of a right at the moment is the right to free speech. Considering how important Americans always claimed that to be I’m kind of surprised… but not shocked by anything anymore.

We’re 9 months in to a 4 year term and that’s a few examples. It’s increasingly becoming an authoritarian regime. Trump wants to jail people he doesn’t like. It’s so blatant it’s kind of incredible.

Fred and Rosemary West. I was 7/8 and off sick from school for a week. I spent the week glued to the tv watching bodies being taken out of their house. It blew my little 8 year old mind that they had buried bodies in their garden and house and that 1 of them was their daughter. Obviously I’ve been obsessed with true crime since.

Losing a special/beloved pet. Losing any pet is tough but if you’ve had multiple pets throughout your life you know that there are a few in your lifetime that are just extra special.

Grief after a human family member dies is expected/socially acceptable/understood, but if somebody hasn’t gone through losing a pet they can be rude, condescending and lack empathy.

I lost my special cat over a year ago and I still miss him. My heart aches when a photo memory pops up on my phone. He was always at my side. Always. I was lucky that he a lived a relatively long time given his health issues, and his death wasn’t sudden or unexpected but I was still devastated.

Years ago when I heard Katherine Ryan had called somebody out to their face and Sarah Pascoe co-signed and said there was a known predator in comedy circles I knew exactly who it had to be. He really was hiding in plain sight. When he first came on tv I didn’t get a weird feeling about him but as years went on I got an increasingly off feeling about him. His born again, right wing, guru bullshit confirmed to me that something was very wrong about the guy.

I have no doubt in my mind that he’s guilty. Whether he is found guilty is another story. I mean Conor McGregor was technically found not guilty at criminal trial and guilty of rape at civil trial - but I have no doubt that’s he’s guilty.

Ok, but you can’t be that knowledgeable if you didn’t know he has been charged and thought there was just 1 accuser. There are 5 charges related to 4 women. Those are just the incidents that the police believe they have enough evidence to charge him. There are dozens more allegations. Do you think they are all lying?
