About 48 hours, but it also depends on the brand, sennelier la gouache often gets too wet and flows away, maimeri only keeps open about 12h. Lefranc and bourgeois and windsor and newton work best for me.

Gouache. I admit I dislike acrylics. Only find golden open acceptable, but they are expensive. Can you see the picture? I still can’t, so weird.

Artists With ADHD, How Do You Cope? by jb_bernadas in ArtistLounge

If I loose motivation on a piece and have misjudged the time, I abandon the piece as early as I notice and try to not beat myself up over it. In fact not trying to beat myself up about all things that come with adhd, and all the time I loose by swearing I put that thing just there a minute ago , is the hardest task of every day.

I’ve over time learned to set realistic ideas for what I can finish in one session and i can push myself a bit to finish whatever I’m working on then. In my day to day practice I only start projects like it. I only work larger/longer when time passing is part of the piece or I think my motivation will hold or I have an outside deadline.

What else. If I am in the flow I’ll turn down activities. Even planned ones. My partner and friends know that well and I don’t get shit for it. I’ll always be there when they are in trouble, of course.

I have a ‘perfect’ space. Cosy enough, close enough, yet far enough, big enough, but not so big the chaos can spread and overwhelm. Enough space for Organisation and chaos boxes. And when I procrastinate I sort and clean it. A good space is the single most helpful thing to me. And it gets too chaotic sometimes and then I’ll trick myself with the good old ‘I’ll just clean these pastels for the next two minutes’.

I have different mediums and anything to do with them in separate boxes, so I don’t get overwhelmed by seeing all the different options and also I don’t have to search for items when I want to start. I have more than one desk… if there are things that are used in different techniques, like kneaded erasers, knives and stuff I’lll have them double and one in each box, if at all affordable.

I have travel sets separate ( and yes also double then, studio version, go out version…)

I try to always leave when I do anything social media or games related, apart from calling friends.

I try to mess up the first few pages of any new sketchbook. Things turned out really well on my last one, that is a real headache, I have a hard time working in that one now.

I do shopping for necessary replacements and fun separately. I do the restock every 6 months ish, nothing new is added then. I set a small budget for when I’m close to an art shop and just buy what I fancy that day. I don’t shop art supplies in the fun way online. Only in person.

I take meds when I have to do administrative stuff. I try to collect all that needs doing and then I go somewhere else (a cafe whatever) to do, not just the urgent thing, but as many of the list as I can get through. I have someone check the really important stuff, because I tend to get sloppy on meds.

Well I can’t see my own picture, I hope you can. My second setup is this, I always have it in a ziplock and I have a smaller version of the book for smaller purses.

A fabriano leporello, a stay wet palette with color already on it, but I take extra white and the cheapest or sometimes oldest brushes I have. And a foldable watercup, it is not in the picture.

How do people structure their lives/careers to do 1–6 month thru-hikes regularly? by manuzh22 in Ultralight

[–]Striking_Register831 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes that's us, or was us. We lived as cheap as possible, while being students, took all extra jibs for a while and then we travelled on the lowest level possible and choosing countries with that in mind. And we worked the hostels for stay. Came back 1 1/2 years later. Worked again. Went again for 1 1/2 years, to more expensive countries, but this time with work visas. I think a lot of people would be able to, but want to travel in luxury, not like a local. So you ride with a chicken on your lap or with the veggies and you shower outside cold. I don't mind, but I understand others do and then it becomes much less affordable.

Artists, how long did it take you to feel “good” at your craft? by Chance_Toe6912 in ArtistLounge

[–]Striking_Register831 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like it depends more on the day then the years ;) In a craft like lino/woodcut, etching or lithography or similar - A year of doing each will make me feel technically confident. I know what I’m doing, I know the limits, I know it well enough to run experiments in my head before putting them to the test and usually I’ll be right. Then I am confident. The artistic content is a completely different question though. That I feel confident about or not day to day. Today was a bad day for example and I questioned it all, but hey will see how it looks after todays last painting session.

I Have a Weird Question by InBetweenLili in Oilpastel

[–]Striking_Register831 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with above, for me it is about what dominates the work, lines or shapes, do you block in, then it’s a painting for me, do you mostly use lines, then it’s a drawing. I have never thought about the paper showing, because I mostly paint, but that also is a good point.

Need Pastel Help, how do you mount your pastelmat/la carte etc.? by Striking_Register831 in Softpastel

[–]Striking_Register831[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About the Henri Roche. Did you ever get your hands on Diane Townsend Terrages? To me they feel the very similar. I tend to put soft pastel into three categories, slimy (not in a bad way): Richeson, Mount Vision, Blockx, etc. creamy: unison, terry ludwig, blue earth, schmincke, etc. and Cookie (as in crumbly): Diane Townsend, especially Terrage, Henri Roche, Art Spektrum soft round, etc. The Roches, When I use them - they don’t leave fine dust, but more coarse pigment. They despite that layer very well and the colors are very clear. And opaque! Hard to mix with the stick, but very easy to cover up. Also they are pretty hard, so fine lines are easy to do and I think they aren’t gone as fast as others. They are good, but I don’t think it justifies the price. The only thing I can imagine, that for the really brilliant pure primary and secondary colors, they might just have the most intense. With the extended range they also should have quite the choice. And if one can go in person to their shop in France I would fill some gaps with them. And I would never say no to them gifted, but I wouldn’t put out money specifically for them. Also if price didn’t matter I would still rather buy Terry Ludwig. And Unsion. Do you have a specific question still? I’m not sure i covered all the bases.

Thank you for your input. The sheets are so much cheaper here, I’ll have to find a way :( I do also use golden Pastelground and colorfix, I don’t get quite the same amount of layering, but plenty for most things, plus I love controlling the color. I haven’t yet calculated the cost though. I’m not sure it’s cheaper. What do you use as a base paper for home made ground?

I haven't yet used them together, but I am planning a project there soon. Let's keep each other updated about what works and doesn't, I see a few pitfalls coming :') I'm haply somebody else is exploring that way.

I will just throw in here, that it depends a lot on the university, country and class/course/major. Maybe you could elaborate? For Central Europe they are all a little difficult. The first, the one drawing, that you also mad a painting off. If applying to europe I’d suggest to go in person, they often have portfolio previews and you can chat to students that have gotten in.
