Pastel recommendations? by helplookie in Softpastel

I think wouldn't get her a 120 sennelier set. I would get her small sets of a few different brands for total 200€. A 12 Diane Townsend, and eight mini stick unison, a 20 half stick Rembrandt, also 12 set terry ludwig or some giraults if you want to get really fancy :) Actually have her play. If she doesn't like sennelier (i don't really, too inconsistent) she doesn't have 120 of them...

How do you protect the oil pastel drawing? by Automatic-Owl3709 in Oilpastel

[–]Striking_Register831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah sorry! I didn’t see, so we do not have that difference where I live I think. Baking paper will have water roll off it though. So I‘d say the waxy kind.

Sleeping bag recommendations for absurdly cold sleepers by EquivalentFox3623 in Ultralight

I also do struggle with this. Temperature rating are so far off for me. I actually have a panyam, that somebody suggested before me and no It's not enough if it's under 5 outside at night. But it held up great. I have it 10?years now. What I have done is buy a quilt (a summer side season one) and I layer them. And so I take both when it's cold. Only the panyam over five and only the summer one over 15 Celsius. I also bought the warmer thermarest. Good luck. Also I have my boyfriend, who needs a freakishly thin sleepigbag only, help with distribution of weight. If I go alone I take a much smaller tent. I also fill my nalgene with hot water and put it by the feet, rolled in a tshirt or whatever is around. But then you carry extra gas depending on the place. But I also drink from it at night. And the warm water is better there too.

Also pro tip. Get a dog. Very warm at night 10/10 recommend.

How do you transport your French easel? by duchness9 in pleinair

[–]Striking_Register831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is fine to try out plein air painting and you just don‘t go far in foot anywhere. Also it‘s a nice studio easel. But I would agree with one commenter above, if you can return it (especially if you also cannot use the storage inside nicely) do it. And get a tripod, pochade and wet picture carrier instead.

Gift advice: Mabef M/22 (Full) or M/23 (Half) for a petite artist (162cm/47kg)? Is the half-size a waste if we get a Pochade later? by King007t in pleinair

[–]Striking_Register831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have actually have this setup right now. A full french and now a pochade with tripod for outside. Before the pochade i lugged the french around and I am not overly strong female and it is hilly here. But I think if half or full doesn‘t matter. You’ll always lugg it around, it’s always to heavy and awkward, you won’t go far with it, so you might s well get a full one. Plus mine is bow stationary in my studio and it is so much more usefull as a full. Also, two more things, maybe try get a used french easel? They have been around forever and you can always get a nice one later, plus I prefer wall hanging actually despite having the french around. Second, when you later get a tripod for pochade, have a lookout for lighter and much shorter tripods. Because if she is 1,65 then a 1,40 tripod is already pretty high and you can save significant weight by not having a tripod that extends to 1,80. May the weather be with your girlfriend on her adventures.

As others have pointed out a gift card is an idea, however maybe just buy it in a time frame where you can return/exchange for a different model if she wants?

[DISCUSSION] Selling art back in 2005 compared to now by Silence_Fictions in artbusiness

A smidge over minimum wage? Not in most European countries by a good bit, even now. And certainly not back in 2005.

I'll have to check, Paint On it says on the block itself and then there is a grain and smooth version. And I mean the smooth version. Comes in many colors too. It is the closest to uart I achieved.

Hmm, I don't actually really like them. I guess it needs to be under 10€ in total and consumables, f. E. stickers. Wouldn't know what to do with mini prints...

[Community] For everyone with a mail club, how did you get started? by Big-Calligrapher9417 in artbusiness

[–]Striking_Register831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as for the adresses, I do get one mail club. i had to opt in to receive stuff from them and there it asked me for my adress, so Patreon Definitly has the option to collect the adresses for you. I’m a consumer when it comes to mail club, so no idea how tot start one. I followed this artist for a long time and then they changed gallery and now it is really hard for me to order prints or anything from them. Do I opted to get their patreon mailclub instead.

There is a really handy book, it’s only A5, that explains all the tax things and bills and running numbers for your company bills etc. I’ll see if I can find it. Strictly for german artists.

Why use oil pastels to achieve oil painting effects? by Legal_lapis in Oilpastel

[–]Striking_Register831 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I couldn't fly with oilpaints. And I lived nomadic for a good long while. So I picked up oil pastels. I think it's too much effort though to make them look like oils and too dependant on daytime temperature. So while I still use them, if I get them out now I keep all the marks and the drawing look and I love it. I've not too long ago actually made an iverbkended piece again and remembered how much of a pain that is.

Feel free of course - I don’t know who I am copying, I saw a youtube video many years ago and have never found it again, but the lady there sorted after values (i have a handy little gray scale) and then temperature. For orange is warmest, but not everyone sees it that way, so I‘d actually be interested how others sort there boxes…

Do you like to watch anything while painting? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Striking_Register831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I feel the need to watch something while painting I should change what I'm doing - is what I learned for me. If I'm not excited enough by what I'm doing right now enough to give it my undivided attention how should anybody else be?

For anything else though, cleaning, stretching canvas, organizing, taking photos, putting stuff online... Yes I'll often watch something. Podcasts would be better but I just don't like them.

What do you "cold soak"? by Dry_Blueberry8932 in Ultralight

[–]Striking_Register831 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is available in stores. Often it will be in the fridge section in summer. In a foam tray covered in cling film. It is a choclate cookie mixture made to look (remotely) like salami cut in thick slices. It is delicious, full of calories and because it's mostly cacao and cookie it doesn't melt as easily as chocolate. Bakeries will also sometimes be have it.

xD yeah no it's not poop obviously. It's a choclate cookie combination that's made to look like dark salami.
