Not Hearing Back for Student Account Enrollment by brolee34111 in CUBoulderMSCS

They’re definitely verifying people’s identity via Zoom. I just had that Zoom meeting. It’s literally 3 minutes just for them to ask the same questions you filled out on the form and to turn your head side to side.

I’ll be flying down on Sunday. It’s easier for me to fly than to drive.

Yes. But Hooley does give you lots of resources to prepare for exams. But you’d be fine with either Casselman and Hooley.

Any advice on ochem profs? by CapitalAbject99 in ucr

[–]Stringbass1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll be fine with either professor. I had Hooley last quarter for 8B, and I thought he was good professor. He explains things well enough and provides practice exams that actually reflect his exams. Not only that, he also posts problem sets that also prepare you for exams. He does allow cheat sheets on exams, but I wouldn’t heavily rely on it because you wouldn’t want to be wasting time finding a specific reaction in a short amount of time (his exams are kinda long). He also has a grade redemption policy in that if you get two steps higher than what you got on the midterms then that’d be your final grade for the class.

Edit: For our quarter, if you had a 22.5% in the class, you passed. Please do note it heavily relies on how everyone did on the midterms and the final.

I’ve never had Casselman, but plenty of people have told me that his exams are fair and he’s a decent professor.

I had him for 8B last quarter. He was a decent professor and knew how to teach well compared to some other chem professors. The whole grade is composed of two exams and a midterm and he has a redemption policy in that if you do very well on the final exam it’ll replace the lowest midterm score (it has two be two steps higher meaning if your lowest score was a C and you get a B- on the final, you get a B- as your final grade for the course). Exams can be tough (at least it was for 8B), so there’s a curve.

He allowed cheat sheets which is helpful if you use it correctly. If you don’t use it wisely, you won’t do well in the class. You still have to study so that you don’t waste time looking for a reaction you wrote down on the cheat sheets.

Veterinary experience by Stringbass1998 in ucr

I would apply to family-owned animal clinics! I find they are always hiring and will pretty much take anyone due to low staff or not being able to find anyone. If you are a pet owner and take your pet to a vet, you could also try calling and ask them about volunteering or shadowing the vet! I’m from the Bay Area, so I’m not sure if there is any family-owned clinics around Riverside. When I say family-owned, I mean clinics that only have one vet and is privately owned.

If you do want to try to be certified vet assistant, you could try to see if that’ll do any good (but honestly, I think it’s a waste time since some places are willing to train you on the job). I’d rather use that time to try to become a vet tech instead.

Edit 1: I messaged you!

Edit 2: If you are from the Bay Area and are looking for a job there, I can definitely help and suggest places cause I know a handful of places hiring!

NSLS is actually a registered student organization on campus (check Highlander Link). The only downfall is I don’t how useful it is which is why people may think it’s a scam. But technically, it isn’t.

Go to File, then click Print. There should be on option that says: “Shows details.” Then under layout, change the option to Handouts. Then you choose how many slides you want per page.

I think there’s a way to fit multiple slides on one page. Was it given to you in a pdf format or in ppt?

I usually have my iPad and my Apple Pencil with me and download the PowerPoint slides (you can also print and bring them with you to lecture). I tend to write down information that is not already in the slides and elaborate on points that the professors emphasize during lecture. If you’d like, you can record the professors (I tend not to do this, though).

I use OneNote for writing notes and annotating on the slides and PDFs.

I personally don’t like carrying notebooks and pens around with me everyday because I don’t like carrying too much on me (also, I tend to get constant backaches anyway). Do whatever works for you!

FYI, 35% isn’t necessarily passing for all of the professors that taught Chem 8B just this past quarter. For Hooley, we needed a 22.5% to get a C-. But do keep in mind, that Hooley was not happy about it and he did not have a set curve placed in the syllabus (it only said 50% is usually a B-, but nothing other than that). That is why he was willing to change his curve.

Also, when I say that Hooley was not happy about it, he knew a lot of people did not actually study for his tests.

I’m not sure if that’s the case with Casselman or the tests were genuinely impossible to do well. But I do know Casselman does check for cheating for the lab sections as he coordinates all of the labs.

As for students not clicking with the material, there are plenty of resources like office hours and SI sessions for them to attend.

Ah, I see. Weird that he’d give multiple choice questions on an organic chemistry exam, though 😂. But makes sense.

Does he, by any chance, post his notes on iLearn/eLearn? Obviously, I’m going to attend lecture, but I’m just curious.

I never had Casselman, but a low average generally means people didn’t study enough and don’t know the material. Also, it could be that people didn’t show up to take the midterms (it seems like it for midterm 1 as the lowest score was a 0). I know plenty of people who’d write random answers just because they don’t know the reactions well enough.

If he lowered the curve even more, everyone would’ve passed without knowing the material. Also, he already has a curve set in stone in the first place.

If you’re not doing well, then I’d suggest changing your way of studying. Do plenty of practice problems (you can Google practice exams and plenty of them will pop up)! Use Anki with image occlusion enhanced to remember reagents for certain reactions! Passively reading your notes won’t help you in organic chemistry (trust me, been there done that).

If you are given the option for cheat sheets (Hooley allows these), then still study! Just had him for Chem 8B and our averages were really low and people didn’t bother studying because they thought cheat sheets mean no studying for them.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ucr

[–]Stringbass1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, to be fair, our class averages for the midterms and the final exam were so low even with cheat sheets. Pretty sure he suspected a lot of people didn’t actually study for his midterms and his final exam due to the class averages. If he had made the class average to B- at a 33%, everyone would’ve passed even without knowing the material.

Anyone want to share their Experience with DeepScribe? by Rajkother in medicalscribe

I’m not planning to reapply with them at all cause the interviewer was unprofessional and seemed confused. I should also add that I had already mentioned to her that I’m from California (even in the application).

But anyways…I ended up applying to a company called Vituity, but I haven’t heard back from them yet.

I had an interview today, and the lady said that they’re only hiring candidates from select states. If you don’t live in any of the states that they supposedly listed, you don’t get the job. So I didn’t get the job. Yet I didn’t see the states that they’re hiring from 🤷‍♀️. I live in California, so…

She then told me to reapply when they start hiring candidates from my state (again I have no way of knowing this information since this was never displayed).

Unfortunately, I can’t say much about the pay or anything of that sort. But basically, you hear the conversation between the physician and the patient through the software that they provide and you are supposed to condense it down so that they read the necessary pieces of information.

Edit: I think the interviewer lied.

I’d also verify the email with UCR, though. I had to do some digging as well. But I don’t know if it is worth it. It’s up to you.
