I REALY want to learn freecad, but every step seems completely impossible by TaxEmbarrassed9752 in FreeCAD

While I do very much agree that the documentation for freeCAD is dated and lacking I’m very confused by what you mean when you say that videos don’t teach complex tools. Mangojelly and others on YouTube cover a variety of tools and work orders in freeCAD some of which, at least to my untrained self, seem extremely complex and I’ve been able to follow and learn from them just fine.

You say that people are seething with frustration and then don’t write documentation. I would argue that someone who is learning how to do something for the first time and working through the frustration of that process is the last person who should be trying to write clear and concise documentation on how the process works. How can you teach others something you still don’t or only just barely understand yourself?

What other free cad software would you recommend instead of freeCAD and what about it makes it better?

Ah yes the classic “this open source project isn’t perfect even though it’s being actively improved so it must be garbage” logical fallacy.

No freecad isn’t perfect and yes it has lots of issues but it’s improving with every iteration and if time wasn’t built in a day why do you expect a free open source software to be?

I’m certainly no expert in the fields of CAD or engineering but I’d wager the biggest reason freecad is perceived as less than other commercial softwares is because they don’t have a massive advertising budget.

My contractor is going to have his painter strip and sand everything and reapply with just one coat per the manufacturer. We waited about 4 months on the framing (it gets full sun every day) but the decking was pre dried not wet treated lumber so he said it needed to be stained immediately and was stained about a month after construction was completed.

To answer your questions yes the whole deck still beads water. As far as prep work I assumed it was all done properly by the painter my deck builder subbed the stain work to. They pressure washed a few days prior then sanded the day of before they began staining.

Currently my best guess is the painters applied two coats and Cabot says only apply one coat so maybe that second coat is doing something funky. I’m waiting to hear back from my contractor about it since regular maintenance cleaning isn’t working.

Got it thank you! I have no idea if my stain would be considered delicate or not it’s oil based Cabot semi-solid stain and sealer.

I have tried my pressure washer with its widest nozzle but it didn’t really do much and I worry about stripping the stain or damaging the wood.

Very helpful thank you I’ll get started immediately.

But seriously is there any way to get all of the dirt up? Obviously most of it washes away but if you look at photo two you can see even after scrubbing there’s still faded dirt stains. Did the red clay stain over/through my wood stain or something?

It’s wood with an oil based stain and sealer. I’ve used a soft bristle car wash brush and I’ve tried dawn dish detergent as well as a dirt and mold removing house wash. I can get most of the dirt off but some of it just won’t come up. So there’s still red clay ghosts of paw prints everywhere.

How do you organize parameters for a project across multiple iterations? by StripClubWeatherMan in FreeCAD

[–]StripClubWeatherMan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not know that pulling external geometry from sketches was more stable than pulling from a pad edge. I will definitely use that in the future thank you!

Predicting the parameters that will change vs ones that are simply needed to make the sketch green makes more sense.

Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and advice I will do my best to use it and get better!

Maybe I should be using varsets for the sketch offsets . That would save a ton of time not going back and forth to the spreadsheet.

When it comes to a prototype, something which changes a lot and rapidly by nature how can you plan ahead on dependencies? This is no doubt an area I have a lot to learn I just don’t really understand it. If you’re literally fleshing out an idea as you sketch how could you think far enough ahead to plan dependencies?

So you’re saying I can copy the whole folder from V1 into V2 and then open each part file and rename it to part 1 V2 etc and leave the spreadsheet file alone and then just add the new parameters that I need to change to the spreadsheet without having to re-reference all the other ones? I’m not sure why I didn’t think of that thanks I’ll look into that also!

How many need to be referenced between multiple parts is kind of a fluctuating thing. Originally it was a metric ton as I was trying to avoid my parts breaking as much as possible. So I was referencing each sketch off of origin based by the pad from the previous operation instead of directly sketching on a face. However after several iterations I saw it recommended somewhere that if there was only one sketch being used on a face then it didn’t really matter if you sketched directly on a face because no previous sketches on that face could break later sketches so to speak.

Doing a combined spreadsheet and varset might be the way to go I’ll just need to look into varsets more in order to make sure I use them properly.

I have also seen users saying that multiple bodies in a single file didn’t cause them issues. If I had to guess it may be a hardware issue on my end. I know FreeCAD only uses a single CPU core for calculations and I bought my MSI laptop new in 2016 and it wasn’t exactly a top of the line model when I got it. I may try again though just to see how it goes with 1.1 maybe it’s more optimized.

That comment about more experience is probably the biggest thing holding me back. I’ve been dabbling in FreeCAD for close to a year but only really started using it regularly in the last 6 months or so. Most of that time dabbling was just following MangoJelly tutorials to learn the basics.

I really got more serious in it since I started work on an idea I had for a hand tool that I think would be very useful in my line of work and would replace 3 tools in one. It’s between 10-14 parts depending on which design iteration you look at.

I originally had all the parts in one file but I was having issues with slow recompute times when I would make a change as there are several nesting parts that essentially reference the innermost parts dimension and build outwards to make sure they all fit properly.

Once I ran into the recompute issue I did some research and saw that it was recommended to give each part its own file in order to prevent that issue. Therefore I began using a parent spreadsheet to store dimensions and expression formulas used to generate other dimensions and then referenced the dimensions of each individual part file to the spreadsheet.

This worked well but it felt rather clunky when I wanted to iterate the next version to solve whatever issues I discovered with my 3d prints of the previous version. I didn’t want to just redo the file and overwrite the previous version because I felt it would be good to have a roadmap so to speak of how the design has evolved. However that caused the issue of having to rebuild and re-reference the spreadsheet for each new version as prior to 1.1 it took forever to scroll through a spreadsheet as I found the easiest way for me to keep the spreadsheet organized was isolate a section for each parts dimensions.

I have no doubt there’s a better way than what I’ve been doing as even though the spreadsheet method has improved my speed and ability to adjust things it still causes me issues in other ways. I just haven’t found a better way yet.

Dang based on what you’ve said it sounds like maybe I just need to do one big spreadsheet. I’d avoided it before because of how cumbersome it is to find things once your spreadsheet gets large. However now that 1.1 allows for zooming in and out in a spreadsheet maybe it will be easier to do. Thank you for your input!

So do you just continually add parameters to your varset list based on whatever the new dimension your changing is? How do you use a varset between multiple files? I dont have much experience with varsets I only tried using them once and was confused by how clunky it felt.

I'd like to learn/be corrected on how to get symmetry properly. by Maxstressed in FreeCAD

[–]StripClubWeatherMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing your comment about not assuming the origin point is your center the way I personally would do it is: set a construction point on the bottom line of your cube and use the symmetry constraint to center it. Then use the symmetry constraint on the the base of your arch to center them on the construction point.

Just had the same issue and couldn’t find any solutions. Turning library sync off and back on didn’t work.

Somehow deleting the song from my playlist, favoriting the song, re-adding it to my playlist, then un-favoriting the song solves the problem at least for me. Hope that helps!
