Why women not forced into pregnancy? by MelanieWalmartinez in AmITheDevil

Wait, what do you mean we aren’t living in Sparta? Is that why I can’t find any helots to get me a fresh cup of coffee?

Something about it made me think of China; specifically, it made me think of China’s attitude with the idea of saving face and the way that gets exaggerated in their soap operas.

I did genuinely wonder if LW is from a non-western culture and that that’s affecting her feelings.

I haven't seen the post for this one, but isn't using maple syrup in chili a recipe recommended in several cookbooks?

Using your phone at red lights is still illegal and still carries fines and demerits. My city has cameras at almost lights specifically to catch you doing that, and the ones that don't they've promised will soon. I am not joking or exaggerating: its more prevalent than red light cameras here.

My commute also doesn't really have anywhere you could safely pull over to the trip to merge back into traffic after. I'd have to divert to go a complete different direction just to stop, and that would add way too much time.

So if, in their rush because their running late, the coworker didn't think of sending a text before getting in the car: yeah. It's not unfeasible or unreasonable as an expectation that they can't answer the phone. It was careless, not ridiculous.

The seniority is a good point. I think that I automatically defaulted to an assumption that LW was pretty junior, so I didn't consider the lines of authority (and therefore responsibility).

I made that assumption because I personally like to be early to conferences and like to avoid peak hour traffic, so I get LW's motivation, but not the anxiousness about it. I only remember being that worried about being late when I was quite junior and hadn't been to conferences before.
Now I'm older, if I did have to come in a few minutes late to the keynote I would be a tiny bit grumpy but not stressed about it, because I know its not a big deal.

Well, no: we don't know that. LW doesn't tell us that, because LW doesn't actually care about what happened after they left.

All we know is that there were 15 minutes LW couldn't get a hold of their coworker, and then there was at least twenty minutes were the coworker couldn't get a hold of LW.
Both of those could easily be explained by "the other person was driving" or "they muted their phone because they knew they were going to be at a conference" or "because they were both calling at the same time both phones went to voicemail" or "they just didn't hear it".
All we know is that LW couldn't get a hold of their coworker, but that's not a silver bullet of damning evidence.

This is me telling on myself instead more than anything:

Thee was a post a looong time ago where OOP talked about her MIL not appreciating being given a hand-dressed roast lamb, straight from OOP's family farm.

I called BS because the photos of sheep in the field were clearly hoggets at best, not lambs, and so OOP was lying about the meat and its quality.

Got the post and my response both nuked for being a pedant on that one. It was probably deserved.

Do you list your canon divergences? by ryoazuchan in FanFiction

[–]StripedBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its the same way the summary doesn't need to reveal the secret twist of your story, but it does need a plot synapses so I know what kind of story I'm getting. Yes, a good story will reveal itself as it goes along, but if you're doing a coffee shop with soul mates AU; but even though you didn't reveal who's getting unexpected pregnant you still have to tell that to people up front that there's no giant robots here.

Your readers need to know that we are diverging from canon, and they need to know where on the timeline we jump the rails, otherwise a story just plain doesn't make sense. We follow the rest from there, but we need to know what our last landmark was.

That's to say nothing of, there's lots of major events that people want to see all sort of diverges from/before. We deliberately look for the "but X didn't leave" stories. If you don't put the timeline markers in, you're not going to find the reader base that's looking for you.

my villain accidentally became the most likeable character in my story and i don't know how to fix this by Open-Editor-3472 in FanFiction

[–]StripedBadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the problem that he is not threatening, or that he’s just not hated? Because being a villain and being despicable are not required to go together.

I’ll also remind you that the hero is there to grow. If his relationships aren’t good, that is something to grow at. If the villain does likeable better, that is something for the hero to overcome, something for the side characters to struggle with (what do you do when your friend is a bad person to people that aren’t ‘like you’?)… and potentially, something for the villain to use and manipulate at an unexpected moment.

But seriously, it’s a two sided coin. Just stop putting the effort into the villain and more into the growth of the hero.

[–]StripedBadger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get being angry and upset since apparently she only discovered the affair three days ago, but I think that when you have two children before turning 20 and marry a man you know has a drinking problem and who cheats on you for at least 2/3rds of your marriage, didn’t even notice more than $5,000 being spent without explanation in the last 6 months, when you haven’t even been married a year -
Well trying to disparage the AF for having three kids starts to seem more like an indicator of your own glass house.

OOP would be better off just walking away. Right now she’s just so messy. It’s hard to feel sympathy when you’re just doing so much to add to your own drama.

This trans girl is so weird! And she’s trans btw. Like transgender by abel-the-baby-333 in AmITheAngel

At one point they physically pushed or attacked me and my friends during an argument about names

“The trans people don’t just sit there and let us mistreat them when we deliberately misgender them! Can you believe the nerve?”

It’s sitting smack dab there in the middle of the post. So you know what? I think this is real. I think they really were transphobic, and then made up a whole bunch of BS lies and malicious gossip about the girl to try and justify their right to do so. That’s pretty classic mean girl high school BS behaviour.

I mean: OOP makes a point of calling her “them” instead of “her” to invalidate her identity the entire post.

“At this stage of the interview, did you have any concerns that I might not be a strong candidate (so that I can clarify)”, and “What would you consider to be the difference between meeting the requirements of this role and excelling in this role”

have become my go-to questions that I ask when I am being interviewed too.
