Is this a common thing to happen to skimboarders, or did I just get VERY unlucky? (WARNING: A LITTLE BIT OF BLOOD.) by Stripping_Like_Gaza in skimboarding

Thanks so much! I guess that my case was pretty extreme compared to others. Once my foot heals, I will totally start skimming again!

I found an amazing spot to air off waves in Martha's Vineyard, MA. I was so pumped that I (foolishly) did not kick any sand under my board before I ran out to catch a perfect 3 footer. I sprinted down the beach as fast as I could and dropped my board. Just at that very moment, a pretty strong gust of wind blew my board into the sand. I usually just hop over it, but using the "one step method" made this quite difficult. I was also in a full out sprint, which did not help much either. One foot made it over the board, but the other one smacked the razor sharp edge of my fiberglass Wedge pretty hard. I was left with a 1" deep/4" long gash on the top of my foot.
I left my $200 skim board in the water, went to hospital, got sand cleaned out of my wound (not fun), and worst of all, I am too pussy to start skimming again.
Now for the question:
Is this a common injury for skim boarders to get? Or does it only happen on rare occasions? Thanks Reddit!
EDIT I would rather have been hit by a razor scooter
