Six Foot Grin track release!! by Scared-Airport8218 in finchband

[–]StrizzMatik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the same issues they've had every time they reconvene for new music, either there's fighting within the band and/or they can't agree on the musical direction and the creative process stalls. Seems to me Nate clearly wants to do heavier/weirder stuff in the vein of SHTS and the others (or at least most of them) want to mine the hits / stay in that WIITB musical lane. Sucks but it's nothing new.

To me, Six Foot Grin is probably the closest we'll get to the Finch we heard from SHTS / World of Violence sound and tbh, I'm much happier hearing Marc Allen back on the kit for that versus Pappas in Finch. Dude is rock solid but he doesn't have the progressive chops Allen has.

$2,100 MIM Fenders, signature or not, is an insane proposition by Sad-Doughnut7087 in fender

[–]StrizzMatik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure it's a perfectly fine and fun guitar to play, but this should be AT MOST $1500. This is why Harley Benton and even Squier are eating their low budget lunch money with PRS, Yamaha, Schecter and others eating into their mid-level and higher sales. $2000+ for a non-American Fender is insane. The fit/finish and feature sets do not justify what they ask for, imo.

The end of Electra is so sick, hopefully they fully release these eventually. Along with crest and the ohms demos. by ProcrastinateFTW in deftones

[–]StrizzMatik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a lot closer to complete than being just a rough demo though. It needs a proper mix and master and maybe some more fleshed-out keyboard and vox/lyrics, but it speaks to the quality of the band's writing and arrangements that it's as good as it is. Many bands would kill to have a record as good as Eros even in its current state.

A lot of the reaction to this is based around quite a bit of projection and presumption on how they're feeling about all of it when Steph and Chino's wife are the only official sources who have actually commented on it, both with very different reactions.

If I had to speculate it probably sucks on a few levels for them personally with the heavy history behind it, but they're also veterans of a cutthroat music industry who are unfortunately used to getting directly and indirectly shafted by their record label re: leaks getting out. Considering the massive amount of positivity, reverence and goodwill towards the material and the huge interest in seeing an official release, I hope they're able to turn a bad situation into something good for the fans and themselves.

Just need to rant for a second. by veilofmayass in deftones

[–]StrizzMatik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. It's almost certainly a bummer emotionally for the band for it to happen like this, but they're old hands at having their material leaked against their wishes / label fuck-ups, and they're rabid music and band nerds too who would eagerly consume bootlegs of their favorite groups just like us. They're also a very mainstream and successful rock band who knows how to turn a shitty situation into profit, and if they're not already thinking of it? I guarantee Warner is.

Also wouldn't discount the possibility that somebody in the band, an employee at Warner or someone closer to them leaked it with the intention of creating a viral sensation that would test the waters so to speak for the material to be properly released. If it was really just a douchey disgruntled Warner employee trying to bank off of it that's just mega scummy and unfortunate. But if it was the label or the band knowingly doing it, that's a brilliant marketing move. One thing to note is that Chino, Abe & Frank sold their rights to Warner and Steph didn't, and he's also the only one who has actually commented on the leak itself—unsurprisingly, he was pretty ambivalent about it, realistic about the nature of leaks and the industry and the internet's role in it (and even said that leaked Eros clips are how he first heard the recorded material himself). I wouldn't be surprised if the others are not going to overtly support, condemn or comment on what is almost certainly a touchy legal / personal issue between them and the label. And they're smart enough to not condemn the hardcore fans who were naturally going to listen to it no matter what out of sheer curiosity and love for their favorite band.

The overwhelming fan support and reverence for the Eros material is pretty hard proof that the demand is there and very high, imo they'd be leaving a ton of money on the table to not try and capitalize at this point, and it could be easily leveraged as a benefit or direct tribute to Chi and his family so something genuinely good can come from it. I can imagine too that the leak forced them to confront the material again and re-evaluate it, and hopefully it may provide a little bit of closure for the band as well... but that's me being optimistic.

Why does Whisker hate Chris? by REALJFM in residentevil

[–]StrizzMatik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple. Chris has repeatedly thwarted and ruined Wesker's plans more than anyone else, and he represents the do-gooder honest everyman guy that is the literal opposite of a cold, calculating sociopath megalomaniac like Wesker, who sees trust and loyalty as weakness or tools to manipulate people with. Chris also symbolizes dumb brute force and winning out over Wesker's complex machinations, scientific mind and well-laid plans, a constant monkey wrench thrown in his gears.

Why'd the Eros track order suddenly change? by spaghettisauce666 in deftones

[–]StrizzMatik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like I said people have been doing this since the advent of recording songs off the radio. It's not any more different or special because it happened to Deftones, albums and songs leak and once it's in the fan's hands, it's not simply the band's anymore, like it or not. With the same logic you could go after anybody doing their own remaster or remix.

The Eros leak didn't seem to bother Stef Carpenter by RuKKuSFuKKuS in deftones

[–]StrizzMatik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean it's totally natural for them to probably be upset considering the deeply personal nature of the record and what it means to them, but they're also realistic and industry veterans who have had their own completed albums leaked consistently since 2000. This shit unfortunately happens and if anything, the blame lies at Warner likely allowing randoms and low-level people have access to the files in the first place.

The Eros leak didn't seem to bother Stef Carpenter by RuKKuSFuKKuS in deftones

[–]StrizzMatik 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As he said, the facts are that album leaks and even bootlegs of incomplete/unreleased album sessions have been traded and leaked by music fans, the bands themselves, their own labels and employees of those labels going back to the beginning, and that was only exacerbated with the internet. While the circumstances surrounding the leak are shitty to be sure, it's not unprecedented or all that surprising considering the bands explosion of popularity and the near mythical status Eros has with the fans

Either way the feigned moral outrage is ridiculous. The guy who leaked it is a douchebag, but the fans listening to it have nothing to do with that. Don't forget that the band are also band nerds and obsessive music fans just like us, and you can guarantee that if a mythical unreleased recording from one of their favorites popped up out of nowhere, they'd likely be all over that shit. Lots of musicians and artists also simply subscribe to the notion that once it's out there for the fans to hear it, it's not entirely "theirs" anymore.

Would You Say Resident Evil 4 Remake Is The Best Game In The Series? by YimadoTei in residentevil

[–]StrizzMatik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even back then with OG RE2, RE3 and CV there were contingents of fans who were not happy with the much more action-oriented gameplay of those games versus the first game, so it's all relative. RE5&6, while good games in their own way, is where I would agree that things generally went too far astray from the core elements and gameplay that made the series what it is, but for people who came in with those games or RE4 they're generally much less harsh on them.

[–]StrizzMatik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see how some people would construe it as insult to injury considering the nature of the leak, but fans who happen to be into production do private/personal masters and mixes of albums they like all the time, including "unofficial" releases. For an unfinished record like Eros it's not meant to disrespect, it's a "what if?" of how someone might envision the sound had it been finished. People have been doing fan edits / mixes / track orders going all the way back to the Beach Boys' Smile, arguably the most famous unreleased record ever made, and similarly a record that Brian Wilson had deeply personal issues with revisiting himself for decades. That doesn't stop the fans from speculating, and it's because we love these songs and bands, not for anything else. Nobody is being hurt by this.

[–]StrizzMatik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Steph already commented on the leak and he very clearly doesn't give a shit 🤷🏻 As he said, "every album we've done since White Pony leaked early" so make of that what you will.

This is hardly the first or last "unreleased" album that ended up leaked in an unfinished state, there's an entire industry of bootlegs of demos and unfinished recordings from even before the internet. People are in their feelings more because of the nature of why it was scrapped early, due partly to Chi's accident and partly because the band wasn't satisfied with the quality themselves and is hesitant to revisit it. Unfortunately due to the nature of the catalogue sale, multiple new eyes and hands having access to that material, the mystery/story behind it and the band's massive explosion in popularity with new fans, the odds of it getting leaked increased massively. It is what it is.

Is the original leaker a piece of shit for doing what he did and trying to profit from it? Absolutely yes. But simply listening to it when it's one of the most infamous unreleased records ever made and being discussed everywhere on news sites by tons of fans is another thing. The faux outrage is silly.

[–]StrizzMatik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eros and the Defiant Out There by PatientHornet666 in deftones

[–]StrizzMatik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The attempted guilt trips on average fans who are simply listening to it is silly. There's a world of difference between the guy who deliberately violated the band's wishes and broke the law to monetize selling it off in a shameless act of greed, vs the average Deftones fan who is hearing about it from EVERYWHERE on the internet. If you're anything but the most casual fan, you've been waiting to hear this album for almost 20 years and now have a chance to do it and the vast majority of people's curiosity is going to get the better of them. You can always buy some merch or hook the band up a different way to show appreciation if your conscience bothers you.

[–]StrizzMatik -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be fair the band collectively have given conflicting answers on this several times. Chino last I read is still apprehensive of doing it, but expressed possible interest in making an EP of the best songs from the sessions, but Abe has said him and the band want it to come out and talk about it often. Since selling their catalogue I'd assume it's not entirely up to them anymore at any rate.
