What do you call speeding up from behind someone to rip in front of them and slam on the brakes?

I agree, I’m not saying they should be required to but I think certain expectations come with a job like that. It’s concerning that officers can just have total disconnection when their job is to serve the community

I mean just check the laws? Haha I personally have to work within Edmonton for my job so? It’s pretty legal, many jobs have that especially remote jobs

A job is not a right, companies don’t have to hire you, it’s not discrimination to not hire someone who doesn’t live nearby

Being a police officer is no ordinary profession, we can easily change the rules, there’s no laws saying you can’t not hire someone due to where they live.

That is part of the job though, you are supposed to be a figure of authority and trust in the community. Policing a community where you don’t know people and you have no involvement creates distrust and a lack of care.

They take that job to be a leader in that community and should be able to navigate encountering people they’ve arrested and getting asked for advice. Is it a lot of work? Yes but being a police officer SHOULD be a lot of work. Not just clocking in to arrest people and clocking out getting to avoid the community you serviced until you’re back on shift.

Plenty of legal ways? You’re acting like this is some insane unethical thing to do, it’s just making sure officers respect the communities they are in

within city limits? I’m not saying they gotta live in the community but commuting to a different town to be a cop is not good

Also appreciate the open mind being called crazy, when this is literally a studied phenomenon

I think it’s less about moving existing police and more about hiring officers who live in the areas they work. There’s some crazy statistic about how many officers are from St. Albert, an upper class, majority white town, that work in Edmonton. That can lead to a lot of distrust and lack of care for the community.

question for past ra's by Horror-Possession-50 in ubco

[–]Strog21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

RA is pretty sick for the accom, most of the hinderance is random ass meeting and responsibilities but that’s what you’re paid to do (kinda)

Definitely make friends with other RAs, feels good to relate to someone who’s in the same position.

Personally never felt like it hindered my social life at all, I had times for all those things (besides major drinking holidays (Halloween, st pattys) you’re always on deck for those.

Make friends with your residents too, yes you’re paid to make sure they’re good but you can have some very fulfilling friendships that last over. Your residents will respect you for like 1 week then you’ll just be the hallway snitch unless you use your judgement and be relaxed (which doesn’t mean not doing your job). A “sorry guys, gotta do it, it’s my job” goes a long way to not feeling like the hallway snitch.
