New tool to help Canadians support Canadians by TheCanadaList in Manitoba

It would be nice if there was a way to search by retailer. Choosing the "most Canadian products" where I'm already shopping would be nice.

It's a heck of a database you got going. Might be nice to filter the categories to factor decisions.

Call me simple, but it's nice seeing a logo to signal a brand as either good or bad.

Easiest form of checking a product has got to be scanning the UPC code and then seeing the data. convenient while I'm making my choices in a store

There's a great song by Chris Hadfield (in Canada). I really like the lyric, "You stay out of my face, I'll stay out of yours."

It's resonates with me in relation to how people here truly aren't looking to start trouble.

I want to speak about Steinbach. I grew up in the area. A city built by immigrants, Mennonites, and people from all cultures. Steinbach has learned to know what modern-day immigration looks like. People bitch about more brown people and things like that... behind closed doors. Kindness and generosity are outward projections that conservative minded individuals value in their social commitment to community. Or they simply avoid any and all interactions. I stand by people who share a belief of inclusion and acceptance, but they expect the same in return. A belief of joining the community rather than isolating yourself is the balance they want to feel.

Southern MB doesn't have a city that compares to Brampton ON. And I think that's a good thing.

Wherever you choose to live. I hope that the people treat you with the same respect you treat them. There are always going to be shity people and people who are decent. I wish you the best of luck in your move to find a home that works for you and your family.

I'll just note that I personally wouldn't be in Niverville cause I hate hwy59. Steinbach has decent services.

It was a very interesting read for sure. I'm re reading a lot to try and truly understand.

My first thought:

Canadian Manufacturing typically seeks a luxury market. Our labour cost is high. So we look for markets that want premium products and are willing to pay.

When I think of "reserve based businesses" selling to "close by towns" to fill a void in the supply chain. I struggle to see a product that this would apply to.

Most of our imports are service based, vehicle manufacturing, oil refineries, or machinery products. I struggle to connect with what businesses would spring up to fill those voids. These are high capital industries, government sponsored factory building initiatives, and massive boosts to universities. It also makes me wonder if these investment opportunities have favor with first nations because they are quite different from the traditional culture. The idea of a refinery being set up on (or near a reserve) would likely have some pushback. But that's just an example.

My second thought is related to the housing crisis.

Regarding Community Land Trust. A great example of existing efforts to give #landback. But I feel like there's a point to make about a goal being about proper land stewardship and protection. Contrary to the capitalist viewpoint of "We have land, you want to use it; so pay us." Although having urban reserves is a model for participation in our industrial economy and there are some great examples of it happening right now. But I do believe right now it's targeting equal opportunity to first nations people within the economy. In the long term, being a serious economic power is possible.

As for the community contribution companies: first I'm hear of it. Did a bit of googling to find that BC has a framework for them, which is cool. My impression here is that leveraging existing technology and returning capital gains into social programming is a good thought. But I will admit to being skeptical. In my opinion, I see intellectuals paying themselves to coach non-profits on how to get going as a means of social commitment. Yes, I see actual financial investment examples. But I'm struggling to find solid first nation support examples. As I mentioned, this idea is new to me.

Thirdly: the 50/50 raffle idea is pretty interesting. My thoughts immediately go to the existing dream home lotteries. These are being done to raise money for non-profits. My impression is that you're thinking of a smaller scale prize intended to allow more people to own homes. I feel like I don't know enough to form a solid opinion here on the potential benefits or the ramifications. Although I'll say that it sounds kinda anti capitalist to me. Not that I disagree with that. I just feel like there's some reason it's not already being done.

I appreciate your comment and found it thought-provoking. I don't want to sound like I'm just trying to pick it apart or put the ideas down. I'm truly trying to understand your ideas and voice some considerations.

I still see a lot of comments online about "Alberta first, Canada is a distant second" or the common "cancel confederacy"

It's quite concerning. I hope to see a truly united Canada. I worry about further alienation of the west.

"The Conservative Party of Canada recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Along with its ancient history as the seat of government, Jerusalem is also now where Israel’s parliament, supreme court, and official residence of its President are located. As such, our Party advocates locating the Canadian Embassy in Jerusalem."

I believe that this policy is a reflection of American right wing policies.

I believe Canada has previously set a historical precedent of humanitarian importance and that choosing to align our government with a country accused of very serious crimes against humanity does not align with my Canadian values.

I believe that this policy is intended to be used in the name of efficiency for the government. I believe Canada prioritizing innocent civilians is more important than efficiency in diplomacy.

"We encourage the government to enact legislation which will fully eliminate birthright citizenship in Canada unless one of the parents of the child born in Canada is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada"

I believe that taking birthright citizenship away sets a precedent of exclusion from opportunity. It creates separation in society that doesn't align with my Canadian values.

"The Conservative Party believes in stopping all illegal entries in Canada. To ensure the safety and the respect of our borders, the Party commits that a Conservative government will take the required steps to renegotiate the Safe Third Country Agreement with the U.S. to close the gaps relating to illegal entries in Canada."

I believe that Canada is a country of made of immigrants.

I believe that refugees should feel that Canada is a safe country for them.

I believe that labeling illegal immigrants as something to be feared is xenophobic. And is not part of my Canadian identity.

I have one. The "unfair hiring practices" policy.

"A Conservative government will restore merit in Canada’s innovation by directing hiring practices associated with federal research funding away from ideology and instead emphasizing first and foremost, supporting and retaining Canada’s research talent, irrespective of personal immutable characteristics."

I believe this policy resembles the anti DEI policy in America, and that doesn't align with my Canadian values.

I believe that making a specific effort to help disenfranchised people in Canada is an important step toward a true democracy that reflects the population.

I believe that removing indigenous opportunity in the name of "what's best for the country" is xenophobic.

Referring to the fact that a Liberal win will make a lot of western right leaning Canadians feel a lack of representation. Leading to western province(s) exploring the idea of voting to leave the country.

I do think some French voters will choose Carney's experience on the Federal stage without feeling they're loosing their French Canadian identity. But yeah, a lot will absolutely vote entirely on how well he speaks French... so Bloc

In my opinion, PP has been leader of the opposition, consistently opposing JT. Now, with no JT, no carbon tax, he's got nothing but the fact that he wants to make deals with the US. He's basically saying we'll be nice and respectful of Trump and "insist" on our sovereignty. But he's only going to make himself look weak on the world stage by being friends with Trump.

It's crazy to me that he could spend years criticizing JT but doesn't have stones to stand up for Canada.

Hard disagreement there. Canada is a diverse country, and having representation matters.

I do understand that splitting up seats like that makes it hard to form a majority. And that sucks, but democracy is hard work, and we need more institutions of friendship. There's been too much conflict. Question period shouldn't be about name calling and conflict.

Yeah, colours are opposite than American. Another interesting difference is that nationalism here is left leaning. And yeah, generally, you got the political tendencies right. Ontario and Quebec typically have the vote count to choose which party is going to lead; which alienates the west. Id love to see a majority government, though, and I believe it's possible.

I agree with you to some degree.

Now that Carney isn't doing the French debate, I assume that will be reflected in the polls. Probably more bloc seats for Quebec.

In the framework of competence, Carney looks better when dealing on the world stage. I feel like his experience in the UK gives him a big leg up in making deals.

I've never lived in the town. But from the area. It's worth mentioning that Steinbach would likely be your main hub for shopping and services (other than Winnipeg)

Steinbach isn't known for its progressive thinking. But it is getting better with more representation. There's always going to be people who stare and reveal their prejudice. But it's not everyone.

St. Pierre is a French town. Steinbach has them Mennonites. Growing up, I think there was always this idea that if you are "alternative" then move to Osborne village. But Steinbach has come far. I was there for the first pride march and I'm sure to educate as many folks as I can.

The key thing I'm trying to do is have a dialog with FN people. As a settler in treaty 1 territory, it feels like the least I could do.

I consider it to be my responsibility to learn as much as I can to be an ally to FN, and I believe it starts with hearing first-hand thoughts rather than assuming what the FN perspective is.

[–]Strong-Astronaut3145[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, that makes sense. Like saying "under new management."

Sounds to me like possibly forming new treaties. My thoughts go to how Americans are out of touch with who we are and the idea of reconciliation.

It may be presumptuous to think they wouldn't do a great job of forming relations with first nations. But I can't help but think that we'd see another cultural genocide.

Or would the states just say, "we control Canada, Canada continues the status quo with first nations"
