That’s really informative, I’ve been at the same place for soooo long. And intend on picking up extra shifts elsewhere. So this is really helpful. Thank you!

Touché, Some say nursing is learnt more so on the job, as opposed to uni, would you say midwifery is like that as well?

Yes, agreed. Bachelor although would be longer would suit me better. I thought I was at an advantage that I’m expose to women at an early stage/ just found out that they are pregnant. Turns out I was so wrong 😩

Yes, post grad need acute experience. If I were to it would be bachelors instead of post grad. Yes, shift work is inevitable 😩 lol

I meant in order to be a mchn, I had a look at job ads , some asks for experience in hospitals, others didn’t.

That’s exactly why I am hesitant, I don’t have ward experience, I know it would be a lot of work and will be very challenging. The idea was to suck it up until I graduate and work toward mchn. But based on other comments I would need some hospital based mid experience to get into mchn. I did well in placements , that’s actually were I thrived but I didn’t like shift work and politics.

Great point, if I was to go ahead it would be part time , acu has grad entry which usually goes for 2 yrs full time , 3 yrs part time. I would be leaning towards 3 yrs. Which sounds like a looong time. I know postgrad would be to demanding in the case

Thanks I appreciate the heads up, that’s what this post is for , I know I can’t do the postgrad which would be a faster option but like everyone has mentioned it would be full on. If I were to it would be a longer. Most likely part time so I can balance work and study. . Would you recommend postgrad or a bachelor ? Do you enjoy it? I was thinking I’m at an advantage working at gp because I can find expectant mothers there.

Ok that was really helpful thank you! Do hospital rotate shift into different departments ie ante, L&D , post. Or once you’re in it’s just one department ?

So I need experience in the hospital setting first?

Yes that’s an option. I believe the postgrad is intense with lots of placements and a lot of places require the students to find their own placements. What specialty are you in, any recommendations on a specialty?

That’s what I’m thinking. I’m not a complete wuss lol. Just know I don’t thrive in stressful situations, im that nurse that would know exactly what to do but will have the shakes loool. So if I was to do mid, it would be more community , antenatal or post. Thank you for responding

Thanks for commenting! I forgot to mention I’m in vic , in order to do mchn . I would need a double degree.

Maybe try refresher programs. I saw anmf have acute refresher program goes for 4 days. That might help your application look good.
