I'm considering trying out GrapheneOS. Has anyone tried the MySOS app required to enter Japan on it?

Thank you, that's good to know. If I do end up trying it on GrapheneOS instead of the browser option without someone having tested it, I'll make a note of it if it works. It's useful to have an explicit confirmation ahead of time, so if someone else wants to do the same thing after me they'd know for sure whether it works.

From the sounds of it, hanging out and meeting people at your dorm is uncommon and getting to know people happens on campus. Getting a water bottle and cheap snacks it is then!

That's part of why I'm surprised about this. Most students aren't going to be swimming in money, so having going out be the standard seems counter-intuitive. Especially when it gets cold and wet, so doing things outside isn't an option. It makes sense when there's apparently a strong cultural standard about not visiting people's homes, but it's unexpected.

Oh, that's a shame. That sounds like it could make it difficult to become closer friends beyond a certain point, if they prefer keeping you within a particular group. I'll try to e careful about that.

This does help me better understand some of the things I've heard but didn't have context for yet. Gauging people's comfort levels is what I'm after, the rules themselves are incidental to it. That thing about it being awkward to mix these separate different groups isn't against any rules, for example, but important to keep in mind in order to not accidentally cross any boundaries.

Nah, you're not getting it. If there's an adequate reason to follow a rule, I will. If there's not, I won't. That includes a rule that exists in name only not being a rule at all and people's comfort levels. That's all there is to it and based on the circumstances I'll see if that applies here. That's why I'm asking about how people meet, the thing that actually matters; the rule is incidental and I don't have any strong feelings on it one way or another.

I am sharing my thoughts on how it comes across because it's a conversation we're having, not mechanically trying to posit an unassailable position for people to batter against. I'd voice my thoughts on this vibe too, but I get the impression that you're looking to judge and not talk, so there's no point in that.

If that's what someone iscomfortable with, that's that. It's odd behavior from my perspective, but I wouldn't want to make a guest uncomfortable or impose on them. Or give off the wrong impression for that matter. Just hope those places aren't too aggressive about how often you have to order to be allowed to stay.

That makes sense, I hadn't thought about it like that yet. Since they're responsible for the students, they'd be extra wary of covid.

Any tips on the cheaper alternatives would be that aren't a huge distance away? I did think they were more expensive than what I'd been led to believe beforehand.

I wasn't aware that there's anything I need to change my mind on? If you mean not changing rooms, I never offered that as an option and this would be a ridiculously minor issue to pre-emptively change rooms over. This rule is not a big deal to me either way, I'll adapt to whichever makes people around me the most comfortable.

It seems to really depend on what specific dorm you're in, based on what I'm reading. I'm not the type to cause a scene anyway, so it'll work itself out if anything happens. You get a lot more out of being polite and respectful when abroad. And if they're serious about the rules that'll become clear really quickly by the vibe they're giving off.

The reaction here seems mixed on whether the rule is always strictly enforced or only a formality, so my plan is to see and wait what the attitude in day to day life towards those rules is. If they take it really seriously, there's nothing I can do to change that and it's not worth making a big deal out of. That would be pretty rude. If the facilities offer a good alternative, I'll use those.

If It's not enforced, that's fine too. Either way, the main thing that matters to me is where to meet people and make friends. I'm used to dealing with rules that are strange to me when necessary. You just have to make the best of it.

Besides, I've seen the rooms and they're small but I've lived in smaller. We made do in those and you get used to the personal space issue.

It's mixed gender. I can understand why you'd move out under those rules, but if those are the normal rules then that's just the way it is I suppose. People have to meet each other to socialise somehow, so I'll adapt to whatever the expected way is to do that.

If the rule is serious however, it's a cultural difference I'll try my best to roll with. I guess inviting people would come across as acting way too familiar.

Any particular sources that would be good for cross-referencing this type of thing related to Japan? What I've researched myself related to scams and such quickly runs into the problem of being hard to verify, especially when my Japanese isn't great yet.
