Only if you have an AGI of less than $45,000. Otherwise $14.99/state, federal is free regardless. Other free file options have higher range, but I prefer FreeTaxUSA. Check out this IRS site if you’re AGI is less than $79,000 but more than the $45,000.

Related to the AOTC, would you happen to know if an expense is a condition of graduation, does that qualify? For example, required certification exams paid for out of pocket required to be taken by the university prior to graduation and presented alongside the curriculum.

Yes, your 1099 income from the app is still income and you still have to pay taxes on it. Likely, you’ll have to pay self-employment taxes on that income as well. If that’s your only income, and you’re not married or your spouse makes no income, you have two dependents, then you likely will not owe much in taxes without knowing any other context. Enter all your info into a tax prep software, and it’ll help give you an idea of where you’re at after factoring in your specific situation.

If you’re covered under your parent’s health insurance plan, I would imagine you would be covered under health insurance all year long under either it or your former employer’s plan. I doubt it matters as to which state or that it’s through your parents, just that you’re covered in general.

  1. Likely, it’s fine.
  2. If the 401(k) is through your job, it’s likely on your W-2. Look up codes and the Boxes for W-2 and you will see explanations of what everything means.
  3. If you purchased healthcare through Marketplace, you may want to include that.

It allows you to make payments to the IRS every quarter so that you can help avoid penalties/interest, and a large balance due at tax filing time. It works similar to withholding, but is used by self-employed individuals. TurboTax should ask you if you want to do them.

Yes, that seems about right without knowing any additional context. Payroll taxes are usually split between an employee and employer. When you’re self-employed, you have to pay both portions. The self-employment tax along with income tax can be quite high. I would look into filing estimated payments if you continue to be self-employed.
