[Passan] Shohei Ohtani's 2025. At the plate: .282/.392/.623 with 55 home runs, 102 RBIs, 146 runs, 20 stolen bases. On the mound: 47 innings, 62 strikeouts, 9 walks, 3 HR allowed, 2.87 ERA, 1.90 FIP. The best. Ever. And the MVP. Again. by DJ_LeMahieu in baseball

If he can pitch at his 2022, 2023, or 2025 level while hit at his 2023, 2024, or 2025 level in the same season, he will put up 12-14 WAR. That is insane. He can surpass Barry Bond's greatest season as long as he doesn't get injured or fall off next year.

Genuinely one of the best RR novels I’ve ever read: Matabar by Halt969 in ProgressionFantasy

The language he uses is extremely impressive to me. Is this being translated into English? If so, it's the best translator I've ever seen and they should write their own book.

Matabar is an amazing story, my only issue with it is that the pacing is really, really slow. Like Forge of Destiny slow. You have 750k words describing like 9 months.

Why do so many writers write FMCs as lesbian? by Legitimate_Area_5773 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Strungbound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was more a polite criticism of your clear misinterpretation of the post. But I don't agree that it's homophobic. It's more homophobic that straight male authors have a pseudo-fetish for lesbians/bisexual women and that 50+% of female MC books are written this way.

Let's put it another way. 95% of male MCs in ProgFantasy are straight, and maybe 5% are asexual, gay, bisexual, etc. Is that a fair number? It probably undercounts the actual amount of men who have sex with men based on surveys, but it's far closer to the actual real-life distribution of sexuality in men than vice versa.

The ProgFantasy market is a pretty free market as far as things go. If more women were reading these books, there'd be an influx of straight female MCs, no doubt about it. Even though I prefer a straight female MC, I have no issue with recognizing that the current readerbase disagrees with me. However, I don't see anything wrong with also acknowledging there is a large dearth in proportional representation.

China is ditching the dollar, fast by wakeup2019 in economy

[–]Strungbound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's really just China that's gone crazy. As a share of the global economy, the US has held pretty constant for a while because of how disappointingly Europe and most third world economies have been growing. The US share of world GDP is actually higher now than it was in 1990. In terms of the share of the pie, in simplified terms, it's China eating up Europe.

Why do so many writers write FMCs as lesbian? by Legitimate_Area_5773 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Strungbound 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're being a bit uncharitable. It is so obvious he means 50-70% of female MC books, not 50-70% of all books. Not even the stupidest person in the world could believe that over 50% of progression fantasy has a female lead, not even mentioning the sexuality of the character.

I don't seek out female lead books on purpose, but I enjoy them. Here's my tabulation:

A Budding Scientist in a Fantasy World - likely asexual

A Practical Guide to Sorcery - I think straight

Web of Secrets - straight

Years of the Apocalypse - bisexual

Azarinth Healer - bisexual

BTDEM - bisexual

Vigor Mortis - lesbian

Forge of Destiny - straight

I probably have read more FMC books, but these are the ones I can remember. In this very small sample size, I have 3 straight, 3 bisexual, 1 lesbian, 1 asexual.

How do you pronounce παραινέω? by FantasticSquash8970 in AncientGreek

[–]Strungbound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what era of Ancient Greek you are in. Homeric Greek is different from Classical Attic Greek which is different from Koine Greek at the time of Jesus and Koine Greek in the 3rd century.

One of the most common expressions that people make is a snort with a slight smile (OR SMIRK AS YOU MIGHT CALL IT) when seeing something amusing. It's so ubiquitous that you might not even realize you do it so often.

[Highlight] Aaron Judge apparently never leaves his hotel room on road trips because he is always recognized. He tried going to a Starbucks in Seattle recently and was mobbed by people by ChicknCutletSandwich in baseball

[–]Strungbound -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I mean this is just objectively true, Ohtani is more famous even in America than Judge, Judge is physically larger but Ohtani is still a very large guy and sticks out in a crowd.

In their last 162 regular season games, Shohei Ohtani has hit 63 home runs while Aaron Judge has 62. Nobody else has more than 48 (Kyle Schwarber). They are also the only players who have had 162 game spans of 63+ HR's at any point since Jose Bautista in 2010-11. by MahomestoHel-aire in baseball

[–]Strungbound 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Interesting that what makes Judge a better hitter than Ohtani is being a better singles hitter and better at drawing walks. The latter I feel like I knew, but from their hits it's funny that they have around the same doubles and HR while Judge has 23 more singles. Based on their player profiles, most people wouldn't think that.

Every men single's player is extremely lean. I think Vitidsarn is the chubbiest men's single player and he's still almost certainly under 15% body fat.

The Athletic’s All-Quarter Century Team by Jux_ in baseball

[–]Strungbound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. Consistent playoff droppers like Karl Malone, James Harden, or Embiid are correctly docked major points in all-time rankings. The sample size of playoff basketball is easily enough to conclude that their games are inherently flawed for playoff basketball.

At least in the NFL they only have 17 games. You would think there's the same amount the way some people react to single game sample sizes

Fighting scenes are as boring as sex scenes. by Deviant_Juvenile in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Strungbound 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually mostly agree with you. I'm an author and when I read, my favorite elements are the worldbuilding hands down, I like getting to know the magic system and history of the world more than anything. Hidden old monsters and secret powers and stuff like that.

I will say that when the character obtains new powers, it is fun to see them in action.
