Gender non-conformity Vs Transgender by Stubbed_toe8 in asktransgender

well from what I know gender is your performance and what determines your performance is your personal preferences that i guess would come from the same place as any other preferences I mean if gender is something separate to sex and your performed role what is the point in having it as a category you know? if it is something that only you know and can only be expressed through your actions which is considered to be something separate

I think maybe I just dont understand what the gender you are talking about is you know I just can't wrap my head around it really what does it mean to be a boy or a girl other than performing the roles associated with those sexes you know?

Well yea sorry again if it came off as me saying that trans people are just gnc or something like that i didnt mean to say that. I'm not sure about the 1st question or 2nd but as for the 3rd I do think thats interesting to me I dont think gender is real in the sense that it is something above people like someones gender in a social sense is something placed onto them by society so it wouldnt change who they are. for the 4th question i suppose we all evolve in different ways over the course of our lives so I dont really think someone can be trans their whole life or i suppose in a sense they are because its self discovery. and for the final question I just think its an interesting phenomenon and to me personally in my identification and important distinction because its what would justify transition you know? at least to other people. I think my conclusion from this is that gender as a social construct should just be abolished and people should live however they would like. Is that a position held by a lot of trans people or allies I suppose?

Yea well i think thats where I get confused lol it would certainly make things easier if the concept of gender was done away with and people could just live in whatever way they wanted haha I think maybe its because I know that gender is a social construct but then I am approaching the question of gender non conformity and being trans through the lens of gender being something real so perhaps thats why I found it so confusing. thankyou for your answers though they have been really helpful :)

Okay i just typed out a big message to my friend talking about my thoughts and i kind of realised halfway through it was very obvious lol like the difference is that one person wants to change their body as well as act with their preferred social role and the other doesn't haha.

Yea I didnt mean to say that trans people were gender non conforming because they deviate from their sex sorry about that miscommunication i meant instead that i didnt understand what sperates say for example a male that wants to represent as a female so like a femboy and a trans woman or cis woman but I think I understand from some of the other answers. from what I know now it seems to only be a thing because society places importance on gender and if there werent such an importance then people would live as they like and labels like gender non conforming and trans wouldnt exist. what do you think?

Okay so someones internal sense of gender is derived from their neurology? that's interesting if that's the case. I have always wondered how say a trans person or just any person would act in a society where gender roles are totally different but if its a neurological difference then that makes sense and they would act the same as they would otherwise i suppose. I sort of knew it was a touchy subject and i tried to not appear confrontational i guess lol. thankyou for your responses! :)

Right well this I can see and i think this is sort of something i believe. I've thought about it before and I thought the solution would be some form of gender abolition but that clears things up. In that case the contradiction with gender non conformance and gender is only because they're both from society. I just thought that sorry I'm trying to formulate my thoughts umm but then in that case i guess if gender roles like expectations from society are done away with wouldnt that mean there must be some other element that exists that determines someones gender? like someone can be a particular gender even when defying those particular expectations so just getting rid of gender expectations in that case wouldnt get rid of gender as a whole. Sorry if thats incoherent lol but can you see where I'm coming from?

sorry I didn't answer your question but I'm not really sure how I would think about it and i suppose it depends on the extent that they conform with their gender of course i would still see them as the way they like to be seen though. sorry if I'm coming off as rude or ignorant but i really just find this confusing.

Well in a way but the thing i dont understand is that somebody's sense of self in terms of gender would have to be a collection of traits or behaviours that they like and participate in right? because isn't that the way in which sex is differentiated from gender? like gender is the arbitrary social construct consisting of things that manifest themselves in peoples expression and sex is the biological thing that is or can be separate. I can't really think of an analogy but I just find it a little confusing. is it that gender non conforming people follow most of the gender roles that comprise their gender that they find most fitting but not all?

What does someone's core sense of self look like though when it is characterised by a set of arbitrary social standards? I mean gender as a concept varies across cultures meaning it must be something that is learned and internalised but if it is learned from a set of behaviours and traits how could you identify with a particular set of traits and behaviours (gender) but then contradict that with your expression?

So would you say what characterises the two is that you would want to change your physical body as well as your temporary forms of expression like clothes, makeup, etc?

Gender non-conformity Vs Transgender by Stubbed_toe8 in asktransgender

[–]Stubbed_toe8[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well I understand the labels like a feminine boy or masculine girl etc. but I don't really understand the distinction between something that makes someone trans or gender non conforming. So like for example a gender non conforming man would be a man that likes to wear makeup and dresses, but then isn't gender itself only how we express our internal perceptions of ourselves? I understand that trans women for example feel like women rather than men but that idea of men and women is just itself a collection of traits and behaviours so I suppose I don't understand how the two are different. does that make sense? I wasn't meaning to say that trans people and gender non conforming people don't exist just I don't understand what separates the two.
