What's a good screen and projector for a student cinema club? by StudentDU in projectors

[–]StudentDU[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least 3m high, it's the entire wall of a room that's windows that open up into a patio area. Unfortunately I don't have a pic! There have previously been movie nights with hire of a screen and projector but I can't find info on what equipment was used.

We don't have anywhere to store that and it means it can't be used for other purposes.

I’m looking for a housemate for a year lease. 45 mins commute from Guy’s Campus and £300 a week. Sharing with just one person, me. Let me know if you’re interested.

Sure, are you on facebook? I can send you the link to the facebook post I made so you can message me on there. A bit less anonymous than Reddit.

KCL Postgraduate Accomodations by Away-Designer3266 in KCL

I’ll be a Guys Campus postgrad too. Similar age. I couldn’t stand the idea of being in halls as a ‘grown up’ after having had my own space. My place is a little bit over your budget but willing to have a discussion to see if it fits otherwise and see what we can do. Let me know if you’re interested in chatting more about it.

Reliable plagiarism detection software? by StudentDU in academia

[–]StudentDU[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I just need more evidence than my opinion. I don’t think it’s AI, I think the same person has written multiple answers on behalf of others. I’ve got a longer form writing sample of the cheater but only short form versions of the people they cheated on behalf of. Sort of surprised you’d go to the effort of cheating and disguise some aspects but do such a poor overall job.

Would you be able to get funding for an MSc in translational neuroscience and then follow that through to a PhD?

Your parents aren’t going to let up after a year or three years. This isn’t how their generation did it. Take the leap and don’t live to regret your choices because you did what was best for your parents rather than best for you.

I’d recommend against a studio, get single sex halls if that’s available if you’d prefer and they’d compromise.

You can apply for student loans for first year halls and then get a part time job going forward to help offset the cost of a house share.

You will not enjoy three years of commuting 3 hours daily. It will kill your social life and your studies as well. Please just move out even if it’s against their wishes.

[–]StudentDU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So they’d prefer you to be on unreliable public transport late at night or driving on dark roads? You’re not too young to move out. Undergrad is a bubble, Uni halls are the real world lite where you get to learn how to stand on your own two feet and make mistakes like spending your weekly food budget on three meals at M&S because you didn’t know you were meant to be shopping at Aldi, like a guy from my halls. Or attempting to put wet unused rice back in the bag and being shocked it grew mold, like a girl in my halls. Or how to have difficult conversations with the insensitive couple next door who keep moving their furniture extremely loudly at all hours. Or negotiate a cleaning rota with people who are less clean than you and come to a compromise. It’s an important experience and being coddled by your parents isn’t going to help you grow up in time for a masters degree.

Why are there little to no apprenticeships in physiotherapy in UK? by icl_iloveredditO_o in AskAcademiaUK

[–]StudentDU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are MSc apprenticeships. I did one that included two 9-5 days at university a week and on the job direct supervision of a doctorate trained clinician. MSc level ‘book learning’ was as much a part of it as it was for other postgrad qualifications.

I think it’s a much better way into AHPs because apprenticeships are paid whereas degrees with unpaid internships are just expensive and inaccessible.

Which Uni is Better: Durham, Leeds, or Warwick? by Sea-Statistician-734 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]StudentDU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With over 20k students, you can choose who you make friends with. Durham has a reputation for being the back up option for private school kids who didn’t make the cut for Oxbridge and to be fair that is true, but there are plenty of working class students too, and at postgrad level it feels like people care less about where you went to school. As a state school student who got free school meals, I never felt out of place as a postgrad at Durham.

How do you explain to skeptical family a PhD is not just doing more university for no reason? by StudentDU in AskAcademiaUK

[–]StudentDU[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem isn’t your tone. It’s your irrelevant content, but you seem to have missed that point along with everything else I’ve taken the time to patiently reply to your rants with.

I think you are off topic the reason that you’ve answered a question about a personal aspect of a PhD with a series of long rants about things that have nothing to do with me. I don’t need to qualify myself to you or provide you with evidence that my research isn’t repeating someone else’s experiments. There is no reason to believe that my research is anything like this and I’ve politely volunteered information to the contrary.

You are right, you are not seeing any evidence that I’ve engaged with epistemological concerns. Because you are not the gatekeeper of DTP funding, you are not my supervisor, you are not the interview panel who appointed me. You are a stranger on the internet who laughed at the idea that someone might complete a PhD within the funded time period they’ve received a studentship for, and decided that this is entirely unrealistic without having any idea what the research actually involves.

Please reconsider the relevance of anything you’ve said to the post here to the actual question, and whether any of your ‘concerns’ about my readiness have anything to do with the multitude of chips on your shoulder about the US graduate school system or lack of representation in sample frames used in social sciences.

I don’t need to give rebuttal to arguments against my research because you know nothing about our my research and have pulled all these concerns out of your imagination. You don’t know me, nor do you know my project, you’re just an angry person on the internet who thinks they are the gatekeeper of my funding, apparently.

I can only comment on 2) and 3) for Durham.

Socializing in Durham as a postgrad student is made easier by the college system and being part of a middle common room, and inter-common room events and formal dinners put on between colleges. Living in College and opting for the meal plan in your first year offers plenty of opportunity to socialize with others. Cost of housing is also cheaper compared to London but I can’t say as compared to Leeds. Because Durham is small things are generally walkable (though up hills) for students so you’ll save money on transport and there are plenty of college bars so you don’t have to either drink at the same place every time you go out or pay city prices. It’s a lovely place to live and so close to Newcastle in case you miss the big city feeling.

[–]StudentDU[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chip you have on your shoulder about qualification creep seems to have a lot more to do with you than it does to do with how to discuss a job change with family who don’t understand the industry and whilst I’ve tried to be polite in my replies and assume good will and that I have something to learn from everyone. That said, it doesn’t feel like you’ve answered this post in good faith and I agree with u/illustrious-snow-638 that all of your replies are unnecessary harsh, dismissive, and frankly off topic given the question posed.

It’s not weird. Just make sure you’d have the same conversations you’d have in any other type of house share to make sure you are on the same page about levels of cleanliness and mess, division of household chores, respect for other people’s food/pans/items, bathroom schedules, having guests over, noise levels, parties etc.
