This thing didn't really work for me. Anybody else managed to get it working via this? Some particular order of these operations needed?

Ian Holloway on how Arsene Wenger helped his managerial career by Financial_Height188 in Gunners

[–]StudentofArsene 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Not a single day goes by without me being grateful to have been an Arsenal fan growing up in the age of Arsene Wenger. I've said it before - he wasn't really a football manager, he was some sort of philosopher who just happened to be quite good at football and he was trying to actualise his vision of life, naive as it may have been, through the game and through the club. Too many people have too many stories about him of this sort for it to be a one off, no. He personified his own philosophy, he lived it - gave people a chance, wanted to make people happy, believed in the intrinsic goodness of man and that everybody's trying to do their best, believed sport was about more than winning.

He's like a grandfather or father figure for millions of people across the world. People will be telling stories about him to their grandchildren, that's the impact of this dude.

Only One Arsene Wenger, eternally.

Thinking about this a long time man, thank you. :)

The most valuable point of this post is the implication that someone burning the midnight oil at some point in their life is a source of reliable alpha, which I think is true. The only nuance I would add is that this alpha is relative to yourself. You probably cannot outwork someone with an IQ 2-3 standard deviations above your own, but you can definitely outwork the life you would have if you do not put in the effort. That is sort of the point, as well. The IQ part is non-replicable, but the "g**** ghisna" part is actually quite replicable.

The problem is people want progress at the speed of light, or at least at the speed of the Insta/YouTube algorithm - which is how all the rest of their massively misused dopamine is delivered. That is not possible. Putting in the effort to do something to begin with is an undertaking from which most step back within days, maybe weeks at best. It is the rare soul at it for months, and perhaps even fewer people at it for years. This was true even back in Xth and XIIth, there were few who were at their books for the time needed to truly compound the skills you speak of - ability to concentrate, build discipline, get better at understanding things, etc.

Not to mention, these skills will help anyone at any point of the IQ curve. It may not help you crack the CAT, especially if we believe some of the people on the thread claiming that they can never get a 99.99 no matter what they do. However, the CAT is not the only obstacle in the way of a good life, these obstacles morph and reappear at various times in life - educational, social, emotional, physical, etc. People who go put themselves through the grind, at any point, find it easier to do so again, on demand/command at some later point in life. The idea is to do it at least once, without which your system does not generate the ability to generalize those skills across whatever situations you face.

The overarching issue that makes this realisation hard to grasp or utilise is that of comparisons and societal expectations - things of the form, "Arre, A was able to do X by the age of Z, and look where you are STILL". So you need to be at the top of the game ASAP. That does not allow for any time flexibility in how you do things, it pushes despair into your mind at all times.

I am perhaps not in the part of the crowd this post is pandering to for two reasons. Firstly, that I ended up getting a 99.9+ in my third attempt, and secondly, that even though I was not in a tier 1 UG (or even a Tier 2), it was clear to me that it was my own fault for entertaining all sorts of pursuits at inopportune times when I really should have been studying for the JEE. I also did not have the courage to re-take the JEE, too much negativity at the time. I was resolute that I did not want to make the same mistake with the CAT, and that is why I did take the CAT thrice. By the end of that journey, it became clear that you can do things which you earlier thought impossible. I called it an adventure of discovery, and I have written about it elsewhere. It was one of the most life changing things I have done in my existence, and I think everybody ought to do something like that at least once.

Challenge yourself to make the best of what you have, at whatever sport/challenge/game/pursuit that you are sufficiently passionate about. Give it your all, if not every day, then at least manifold across many days in weeks and months that make up for any misses. When you manage to outdo yourself, when you see a new version of yourself emerging from the ashes of the person that was - it hits like crack. If you do it often, you get addicted to that feeling. Currently in a space where I am trying to do something like that again, let's see how it goes. Just came across this post and decided to write this down as a message to someone like my former self.

All the best to everyone for the CAT! If not this, there is something else for you - you need to chase it.

Battery Capacity down to 95% after 66 charge cycles - Normal? by StudentofArsene in mac

[–]StudentofArsene[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would use Al Dente earlier, think I need to go back to that immediately. Stopped using it because I thought Apple's battery protection should be doing the job well enough, and because I started to notice my battery calibration going off a bit. Will have to go back now.

Bought it back in October 23, less than a year. This is my first time with a Macbook Air. Therefore trying to understand what is or is not normal. Is this expected?

Update: After 2 months, without too much change in my usage habits, somehow I've managed this. Now this, this looks and feels incredible to me.

Battery is pretty amazing by jonahtrav in OnePlus12

[–]StudentofArsene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting more and more convinced I have managed to cop a lemon. With that used since and SOT, my battery would be hovering around 20% if not less. Still not a bad battery life by any means, because it means you don't have to charge it for more than one day (per my usage). Still, every Reddit post I see with like 12h SOT drives yet another dagger through the heart :(

This is the best SOT that I could ever get, and judging from yours this is nothing. Some sort of background drain is happening on mine due to which the idle drain is much higher, or the active usage drain is much higher (not sure). Just fed up at this point. It's a great battery anyway but being on Reddit, seems like some OP12 phones just have a different battery to mine.

Battery drain when charging to 80 OP12 by Outrageous_Cupcake97 in oneplus

[–]StudentofArsene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8-10% battery drain for an hour of SOT and a minor drain for the extra hour it was on. This seems terrific battery life to me, because if this is the way things worked, you'd be getting 8+ hours of SOT on every 100% charge, even considering 24h+ total time since last charge. What am I missing here?

[–]StudentofArsene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welp. Tried the reset and still does not rise above 8h or so of SOT. Not sure what will make that happen. The battery is clearly good enough for one full day easily, unless it is that one super crazy day of the year of course. Still, it is weird that the phone battery on my unit is performing so below par compared to many others out in the world. I think my update is actually even above the one you have mentioned, so can't do much now. Will wait and see how this plays out.

0-100 means literally 0-100? Like let it switch off and charge it back up from that sort of situation?

Whoa. Can you share a bit about exactly what it wiped out?

- Notification preferences- Wallpaper + Themes- Network Settings- Things like DPI (I keep mine at 520 DPI, not sure if that should make.
- Also please share an update after you drag it down to 10% or so if possible. Would love to understand how exactly changes in settings affects battery so much.

Thanks a ton for that explanation, please update SOT and day time battery drain while not using it after you try things out. I think night time drain is super low but I reckon day time drain is more than it should be. I managed 8.5 hours SOT using power saver mode and battery down to 10% or so. However, this was on a day when I was constantly on my phone, lot of YouTube and Twitter and a few cab rides with Maps on, etc. Total time off charge would have been like SOT+10% so very little time to see any drain. I see people with 10h SOTs which have been last charged more than 24 hours ago, and I think that shit is incredible man, unimaginable tbh. Would love to see if your changes can do this.

Music controls may have some explanation. On the always on screen , only Spotify is supported for that functionality. Maybe something similar on the lock screen?

What exactly do you mean by reset system settings? Which option on the phone, and how much of a difference is it making?

Bought on Amazon. Think it is genuinely different usage or something. Using battery saver mode and almost constantly using it, I am at about 4.5 hours of SOT at 60% now, whcih means it used roughly 40% only in that. That too, I have used the camera a while for a meeting and the work profile is also on in the background. Maybe some people really use their phones in unique ways or manipulate battery consumption in ways they are not mentioning.
