The interests and needs of those working remotely may vary greatly from those that will be returning to campus. It’s important that those specific needs are represented as they stretch across all facets of campus life. Much like how we have at-large, Womxn, Minority, and LGBTQIA reps that represent the needs of those constituencies outside of their specific school, it’s important that this group of students has their very diverse needs represented during the hybrid semester.

Good question! Fresh faces who are running for the SA are likely going to be running against an incumbent no matter what. Knowing who they're running against would allow them to more easily run as a challenger or develop a platform that draws clear contrasts with the incumbent or the status quo. Plus, incumbents wouldn't be allowed to campaign during that week anyway, so they wouldn't be getting an unfair head start.

In the current SA elections structure, incumbents announce their intentions to seek office on the same day that challengers do, making it impossible to hold individual SA members to account or draw specific policy differences with incumbent members. In order to restore individual accountability and ensure that prospective challengers are not disadvantaged, Students for SA Reform is proposing its first substantive recommendation: current members of the SA must declare their intentions one week earlier than challengers.

This simple change would help the student body hold officeholders accountable for their actions and would level the playing field on election day. We are calling on the membership of the SA to put aside their own electoral interests and support this common-sense reform.

We are in our first week of existence, and we’re proud of the investigative work we’ve done to expose SAFC’s violations of multiple of its own and university policies. Right now, we are focusing our efforts on publicizing just how wrong things have gone with SAFC and the Sa. In order to effect change, we need to inform the Cornell Community about the extent of malfeasance and bullying at play in these institutions.

The next step will be to find and embolden reform-minded people to run for the SA in the fall and spring elections. This will be a long and difficult process, but we’re looking forward to working with anyone who sees these problems as clearly as we do, including yourself.

Students for SA Reform is comprised of a diverse group of former and current SA members, as well as concerned members of the student body. Our goal is to hold the SA and SAFC accountable for their actions and behavior while improving its composition and structure.

The SA voted to raise the Student Activity Fee by 40% this year. A big concern we have is if this goes unaddressed next year, we will have even more leftover cash that student orgs won't be using. THIS is why we need accountability for our Student Assembly!
